“Have you any idea why a raven is like a writing desk?” And with this non-sequitur we get a pretty good idea just how mad the Mad Hatter is! And Johnny Depp is the PERFECT Mad Hatter. After all we are talking about a superbly talented actor who has so convincingly portrayed such characters as Edward Scissorhands, Captain Jack Sparrow, Ed Wood, Ichabod Crane and Willie Wonka. In my opinion his star quality stole the scene whenever he was on screen in Alice in Wonderland. Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Mia Wasikowska were all very good in their roles but Johnny commands the screen.
I recommend seeing Alice in Wonderland but then again this is coming from a woman who owns 32 copies of Alice in Wonderland. But you already knew I was a collector! – just in case you wonder what the category Peter Coddles is…that’s my collecting, and the name of a turn of the century parlor game. Most of the editions bear the original John Tenniel illustrations. I even have two copies in Spanish that I found in Argentina.
But back to the movie, the 3-D effects are very good, however when the cards were running I thought they looked like runaway lobsters. Put on your 3-D glasses and enjoy. And by the way, this is NOT a kid’s movie – Off with their heads!

I am a JOHNNY fan.. OH indeed I am.. I enjoyed your review on the “fun-ness” that Johnny can bring to the screen.. I must admit though, I could not understand all of what the Mad Hatter had to say at times.. but then I chalked it off as “who cares.. no one else can pawn off the “madness” of the Depp” He is “muchness”
When I go to any of JDs movies, I make it a party.. As I drove the highways to get to the IMAX in Raleigh to watch “my guy” in the 3D mode, the juvenile part of me becomes very transparent. This movie was exciting and the world that Burton presented was pure picturesque.
I must admit that I have NEVER read “Alice in Wonderland” (my family put the ‘fun’ in dysfunctional) reading that you have so many copies of this trip, makes me want to go out – get the book and READ IT….
Spoiler.. Imagination spurts – the ending would have been glorious with Jack at the helm!!!
Love this blog of your cuz… very fun..
I’m having a lot of fun writing it. Of COURSE you are a JD fan, who could doubt it? Wish I had seen it in 3D on IMAX. Well in talking to Peter about the movie on the way home, I decided I had to read it again and also Through the Looking Glass because apparently the movie drew on both books. AND Tim took enormous liberties with the story as far as I can remember. I have an Annotated copy at the shore house and am going to read it this weekend mainly because Alice in Wonderland is all about the politics of the day back then and I would like to know the players. Like Cliff notes I think.
