Archive for the ‘100 Word Challenge’ Category

I am entering this 100 word  essay  for a friend of mine.  I have told her in the past, how beautiful her writing is and so I’m taking the initiative and without her permission and posting her 100 Words.  This great piece of writing needs to be in Velvet Verbosity and so I’m doing it.  Hopefully it will spur my friend Laura to enter her work on a regular basis, she is a superb writer.

I never knew black could be so , well, BLACK. I mean, I have worn black clothing, eaten black food, driven black cars and even , I am ashamed to admit it, appeared in blackface….. But never ever experienced a black this dense, this thick, this so purely without color or light. This is not the soft, caressing black of a velvet summers night nor the ” char-cold” black of a January midnight frost. This is not the black of sleep, nor the black of sorrow…No this is Black without end, without comfort, without sadness. Heavy. Grim. Chilling.Terrifying. Just black……

The New Black

The New Black

Black is the season-less color in Manhattan.

What to wear? Why black of course. Pastels in the Spring? No way! Black pencil skirts with crisp tailored shirts and black blazers. Black Tori Burch flats and you’re good to go until July.

Summer nights and strappy black sundresses are de riguer eveningwear. Rooftop bars look like giant moving inkblots from a distance. Here and there glints of silver and gold bounce off the setting sun.

Black jeans, black sweaters, black boots and black Northface parkas – I must be in a subway in February.

Black is the new black for every season!

An orange candle burning in a dark environment with a bright flame. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I saw the usual signs; She was pale, haggard-looking and yet still animated. I tried to get her to listen knowing full well she wouldn’t. Yesterday she was so anxious to go out. Not home even an hour and she was jonesing to leave. Meeting her friends at the mall and then out to a movie. The night before she went to a party and even though she made it home by her midnight curfew, she was still up for hours on the phone. It’s no wonder she was feeling sick.  She was always burning the candle at both ends.

We did a few errands, mailed some bills at the Post Office and considered going to Starbucks.  The day was cold, raw and rainy and we’re both just so over winter! Hell, it’s actually spring according to the calendar but the temperature is hovering 9 degrees above freezing. “Do you want to go and check out Antique-A-Rama”? my husband asked. “Antique-A-Rama? Is that where the rug place used to be, Rug-A- Rama? I think it’s just used furniture and junk and besides we have so much stuff”, I replied. “Let’s just go mill around, you never know”, he said enthusiastically.

A Matter Of Taste

He loved it, she hated it. Things were going to change around here she thought.  No more college dorm room décor. Perhaps some nice yellow curtains would brighten up the den.  Moving some furniture around wouldn’t be a bad idea either.  Gathering up the piles of discarded newspapers, she hauled them out to the trash barrel.  After polishing the furniture and sweeping up the dust bunnies, things looked better already. But, something was still not quite right

Pulling into the driveway, his heart sank; there was his favorite leather chair!  The honeymoon’s over, he thought.

New York City Smells

New York City is a treasure trove of sights, sounds and smells. The sights are impressive, the sounds often jarring and the smells…well, let’s just say, summer in the City is not a rose garden. Intense heat intensifies the random odors.

A walk past a sewer drain or a pile of garbage and trash can be overwhelming. But tonight, climbing up the subway steps, I caught a whiff of something cooking. It smelled like hamburgers grilling – in NYC?? A few more steps and I found myself standing in front of The Shake Shack. Yum, dinner tonight. Thank you Danny Meyer!

The Golden Swath

It was one of those warm and still nights on the ocean. Anchored out in Old Harbor, we could hear the lively music and crowds at the big hotel on the island. We were sitting in the stern sipping coffee and soon the night sky was dotted with stars.

I loved trying to pick out the summer constellations. Being born in May, my favorite was Castor and Pollux. Tonight the sky was cloudless and there were so many stars it was hard to see between them. Just then I saw the golden swath. Was it? Oh wow!  The Milky Way!

I NEED Coffee

Of course I know it’s silly, well actually I’m only saying that; I don’t really think it’s silly at all. Every morning I gotta have a Grande Americano!

Wherever I find myself – at home, or in another city or state, finding the nearest Starbucks is first on my list. Like any other addict, I have to make sure I know where my next fix is coming from!

One day last week, I had a cup of java-no Starbucks in sight. Soon my temples were pounding and then I knew my addiction was to Starbucks not caffeine.

Cocktail Glass (Martini): The traditional cock...

Last Night’s Martini Glass

Walking into the living room, she was assaulted with the visual cacophony of his clothes, his mail, his magazines, his shoes, jacket and tie and last night’s martini glass!  How many times had she asked him to put his stuff away? A hundred, a thousand? Nagging and yelling didn’t work.  Threatening to toss the stuff out fell on deaf ears.

She began to pick up various articles of clothing, grimacing at this relentless never-ending chore.  If only he would just clean up after himself, if only I didn’t give a shit the way he obviously doesn’t! Ridiculous! It’s enough already!

Busted in rust

Dear Diary:

Oh God, I’m going to be sick.  I’m sure I’m gonna throw up!

I hate that school; I hate my parents for making us move.  They don’t care about me.   Making me go to that snotty school.  I don’t fit in.  I’m not pretty.

Oh God, I can’t go back, they can’t make me!  I can’t bear to see that boy again. I’ll run away!

What if his locker is near mine? I’ll die.  He was right, I AM ugly.  And they all laughed and snickered when I walked by and he said “Hey YOU- You’re SO BUSTED”.
