One late morning, Joel and I were sitting outside at Orso’s enjoying the sunshine, some coffee and wi fi.  It was a beautiful day, the cherries had turned from green to red in the past few days, the roses were in full bloom; shades of pink and red.  The fig tree was laden with burgeoning little green globes which unfortunately would not ripen till the end of summer.

Pasquale came out and asked Joel if he would go with his father, Luigi, to pick up a heavy box.  Since I was working on my iPad and he was getting a little bored, he jumped at the chance of a change of scenery.  Luigi came out and gave me the two finger  sign indicating they’d be back in two minutes.

It was more like 30 minutes, before they returned in the truck and started to unload what looked like a few large coiled wreathes.  At least that’s what it looked from across the street.

Soon it was apparent what was happening;

Taking Direction

Luigi had enlisted Joel to help him string lights in the trees in Orso’s Garden. That’s the official name of this small oasis across the street from the B&B. I’ve spent hours there sitting in that glorious Southern Italy sunshine, drawing zentangles, talking to Peter, looking at the panorama and trying most of all to be present.

That day watching Joel and Luigi up in the trees stringing the lights was so heartwarming.  Joel had told me that Luigi reminded him of his own great-grandfather, Luciano, a few days before.  Luigi only speaks Italian and dialect for sure, Joel knows grazie.  So how the directions were being given and followed must have been a lot of gestures and pointing!

The afternoon was getting warmer, so I ordered a Perroni, hey that’s what you do in Italy and especially in Guardia.  Are you ready for this? A bottle of beer costs 1€! Now if you want Heineken then it’s 1.50€.  Oh what a great place!

The guys had to take a break, Joel had a rash on his arms but was not going to complain because Luigi had cut his hand in a few places with the knife and shrugged it off when Joel pointed out the bleeding.  God, that reminded me of my own father! By the way, I didn’t take his picture but should have, because Luigi was also up in the trees securing lights, he is very spry.

A Well Deserved Break

Here are a few garden photos;

All in all this was a very pleasant day.  We went home and it wasn’t until a day or two later we found out the lights were turned on in the garden that night and everyone was eating chicken!

LOOK WHAT I DID!!

A LAW

A Law is the result of a Bill that originated in either the House of Representative or the Senate.  Once it has been passed in the originating house, it is sent to the other house and  after some push and pull may be passed.  It is then sent to the President to either sign it, veto it or not sign it and let it become law by default.  Congress may override the Presidential veto, if they have sufficient votes.

AN EXECUTIVE ORDER

An Executive Order is just an order issued by the President that is enforceable by members of the Executive Branch until it is either overturned by a law passed by the Congress or overturned by a ruling court.

PRESIDENT BILLS PASSED INTO LAWS in FIRST 100 DAYS
Franklin Roosevelt 76

Harry Truman* 55

Dwight Eisenhower 22

John Kennedy 26

Lyndon Johnson* 10

Richard Nixon 9

Jimmy Carter 22

Ronald Reagan 9

George H.W. Bush 18

Bill Clinton 24

George W. Bush 7

Barack Obama 11

*Took office after predecessor’s death, so we’re counting the first 100 days of their full elected terms — 1949 for Truman and 1965 for Johnson. Gerald Ford is omitted from the list.

FOR TRUMP THE 100 DAYS LOOM LARGE!

In his first 100 days, Trump promised to work with Congress to pass 10 specific pieces of legislation into law. Those bills were:

Middle Class Tax Relief and Simplification Act
End the Offshoring Act
American Energy and Infrastructure Act
School Choice and Education Opportunity Act
Repeal and Replace Obamacare Act
Affordable Childcare and Eldercare Act
End Illegal Immigration Act
Restoring Community Safety Act
Restoring National Security Act
Clean Up Corruption in Washington Act
None of these bills have been signed into law within the first 100 days of Trump’s administration.

Minion liar

Just Wait and See. It might happen sooner than later.

HERE ARE JUST A FEW

  1. “We’ve defended the borders of other nations, while leaving our own borders wide open..”  Over the last 10 years, we’ve seen a 90% drop in illegal border crossings as a result of increased enforcement.
  2. …for anyone to cross — and for drugs to pour in at a now unprecedented rate.”  Drug seizures are actually down.
  3. “Since my election, Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, General Motors, Sprint, Softbank, Lockheed, Intel, Walmart, and many others, have announced that they will invest billions of dollars in the United States and will create tens of thousands of new American jobs.”  Trump claims that his policies have led these companies to create 70,000 jobs. But 69,000 of those jobs were in the works before election and 700 were the result of Obama’s policies.
  4. “We have begun to drain the swamp of government corruption by imposing a 5 year ban on lobbying by executive branch officials — and a lifetime ban on becoming lobbyists for a foreign government.  Trump’s lobbyist ban actually removes some of Obama’s ethics rules instead of strengthening them.
  5. “We’ve saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars by bringing down the price of the fantastic new F-35 jet fighter, and will be saving billions more dollars on contracts all across our Government”.  The savings with the F-35 were in the works before Trump complained about the price tag.
  6. “We have cleared the way for the construction of the Keystone and Dakota Access Pipelines — thereby creating tens of thousands of jobs.” The Dakota Access pipeline is nearly built. Keystone would create 3,900 direct construction jobs and 16,000 total jobs on an annual basis.
And those are just temporary jobs; the permanent job count at Keystone will be 35.
  7. Help unemployed by cracking down on immigration.  A pathway to citizenship will create 145,000 jobs each year.
  8. In the last 8 years, the past Administration has put on more new debt than nearly all other Presidents combined.  This claim is misleading. Obama actually curt the deficit by almost three-quarters.
  9. “At the same time, we will provide massive tax relief for the middle class.”  Trump’s tax plan isn’t designed to help middle class: 6.6% of the plan goes to middle class, 47.3% goes to the top 1%, almost 25% goes to the top 0.1%.
  10. “…stopping a regulation that threatens the future and livelihoods of our great coal miners.”  The coal industry is a victim of market forces and the invent of other energy sources, not regualtions.
  11. “I just met with officials and workers from a great American company, Harley-Davidson. In fact, they proudly displayed five of their magnificent motorcycles, made in the USA, on the front lawn of the White House.”  Harley-Davidson motorcycles are assembled in the United States but assembled using parts from Germany, Italy, Taiwan, Japan, and Mexico.
  12. We have withdrawn the United States from the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership.”  “We have withdrawn the United States from the job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership.”

There used to be show called Truth or Consequences on TV in the 1950’s thru the early 1970’s.  We now have a real time reality show called Trump and Contradictions.

Every politician accuses his or her opponent of flip-flopping their position on certain ideologies and promises, some more than others.  We are now in the MOST more than others.  The following examples are either direct quotes from a speech or a tweet and some are reported remarks.  For example:

September 27, 2016 – “If you’re not guilty of a crime, what do you need immunity for”?

March 31, 2017 – “Mike Flynn should ask for immunity in that this is a witch hunt (excuse or big election loss), by media & Dems, of historic proportion”

June 15, 2013 – “We should stay the hell out of Syria, the “rebels” are just as bad as the current regime. WHAT WILL WE GET FOR OUR LIVES AND $ BILLIONS?? ZERO”.

September 2013 – “President Obama, do not attack Syria.  There is no upside and tremendous downside.  Save your “powder” for another (and more important) day.”

April 5, 2017 – “…These heinous actions by the Bashar al-Amad regime are a consequence of the past administration’s weakness and irresolution”.

August 2012 – “An extremely credible source has called my office and told me that Barack Obama’s birth certificate is a fraud”.

September 2016 – “Any time you see a story about me or my campaign saying “sources said”, DO NOT believe it.  There are no sources, they are just made-up lies.”

November 2012 – “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make United States manufacturing non-competitive”.

September 22, 2016 – In the first presidential debate, Donald Trump denied saying that he stated climate change was a Chinese hoax.

October 9, 2016 – “If I win, I want a special prosecutor looking into Clinton’s “situation“,”.

November 22, 2016 – President-Elect Trump said he had no intention of pressing for an investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server or the financial operations of her family’s foundation, dropping the “Lock her up” pledge that became a rallying cry for his campaign for the White House.

July 8, 2015 – Candidate Trump, “Hillary Clinton was the worst Secretary of State in the history of the United States”.

May 11, 2016 – “Hillary Clinton I think is a terrific woman. I’m a little biased because I’ve known her for years. I live in New York. She lives in New York. …”.

Jan 30, 2017 – Trump: “Keystone and Dakota pipelines will be built with American steel … the pipe to be manufactured with United States steel,” Trump said.

March 3, 2017 – The Keystone XL pipeline won’t be required to use American-made steel to earn construction approval from the Trump administration, the White House said Friday, despite President Donald Trump’s repeated claims.

June 15, 2016 – I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me –and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

Campaign promise – Trump has insisted that he will force Mexico to pay for the wall, but Mexican officials have refused. The president’s budget request Thursday included $2.6 billion, mostly for first stages of the wall.

March 9, 2017 – When asked whether the neighbouring nation would foot the bill, he said ‘Uh, no’ – Senator Mitch McConnell.

Trump is at his most bewildering when it comes to nukes. He has repeatedly insisted that nuclear stockpiles should be reduced, saying last week, “I think nuclear weapons should be way down and reduced very substantially.”

But it’s difficult to square that view with the position he took in December, when he tweeted, “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes.”

He elaborated the next day that he had no problem if that position led other countries to build up their own nuclear capabilities. “Let it be an arms race,” he reportedly told MSNBC.

And we’re not even 100 days into this!!!

I found this years ago and saved it and while sorting through “stuff” yesterday, I came across this and once again realized how telling, insightful and truthful it really is.  So, here’s it is, an autobiography written by Portia Nelson.

There’s A Hole In The Street

I.

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

      I fall in.

      I am lost…………I am helpless.

                        It isn’t my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

II.

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

      I pretend I don’t see it.

      I fall in, again.

I can’t believe I am in this same place.

                        But, it isn’t my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

III.

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

      I SEE it is there.

      I still fall in………..it’s a habit……but,

                        my eyes are open.

                        I know where I am.

It’s my fault.

I get out immediately.

IV.

I walk down the same street.

There is a hole in the sidewalk.

      I walk around it.

V.

I walk down another street.

I saw this post on my friend’s Facebook page and knew I just had to share it on my blog.  It certainly gives one food for thought and drives the point home!  Thanks and a shout out goes to Robert Olsen for posting it (not sure if he wrote it but he get the credit anyway).  isI mean, honestly …
“Why should coal miners pay for PBS”? This was an actual question asked by the Trump administration yesterday. Obviously a blatantly stupid question. We have questions too. Why should a poor black family in Detroit pay for the President to go golfing? Why should a single mother of 3 who’s working 2 jobs in Louisiana be denied health-care so that the CEO of Aetna can get a tax-break? Why is the guy washing dishes in Baton Rouge paying for the President’s wife’s secret service protection so she can live comfortably in NYC? We could do this all day. But here’s the real question the Trump administration and the Republicans who empower him need to answer: Do you have a heart? Did no one teach you to care about your neighbors? Do you know what “empathy” means? Did no one ever teach you to “share” when you were in kindergarten? Have you never heard the phrase “do unto others”? I can’t think of a group of people who need to watch Sesame Street MORE than the Republican party. Perhaps they would learn some common decency.”
Copy and paste folks. This is ridiculous!

Over the years, our country has had its share of great orators; Men who could inspire us with encouraging words, enlighten us with words of wisdom, inform us with clarity, share their vision of a future or soothe a troubled nation with intelligent reason.

The history books, (or at least when I was growing up we had History books in school Geography too) and we learned about Lincoln’s great Gettysburg Address, Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death” speech, and FDR’s first Fireside address.  Greatness continued though the decades with Ronald Reagan’s Brandenburg Gate speech, in  Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “The only thing we have to fear…” inaugural address, John F. Kennedy’s “Ask not what your country can do…” speech, Lyndon B. Johnson’s Voting Rights speech in 1965, Dwight Eisenhower’s  Military Industrial Complex speech in 1961 and Obama’s Race speech, “A more perfect union”.

That’s My Story and I’m Sticking to It

“…I went to an Ivy League school. I’m highly educated. I know words. I have the best words, I have the best, but there is no better word than stupid. Right?”

But now we find ourselves led by a man of few words  or How To Speak Solely In Superlatives.  Although brevity is often hailed and long-winded monologues not widely appreciated, consider the current state of presidential pronouncements.  Pronouncements may too generous a description for the 140 characters tweeted on an irregular basis by POTUS.  The following list features words MOST USED by Donald Trump.

AMAZING – TERRIFIC – TREMENDOUS – BEST – WINNING – STUPID – WEAK – LOSER – WE- THEY – MORON – SMART – TOUGH – DANGEROUS – BAD – LIGHTWEIGHT – HUGE- ZERO – CLASSY – BIG LEAGUE

That horrid mean-spirited chant was ever-present at every Trump rally during the painfully long campaign. Often it was followed by certain attendees  who added hateful calls of “F…k the beaners”.  I, as well as millions of other citizens were horrified by this blatant display of bigotry and ignorance.  But it continued all throughout the months leading up to November and continues to be advocated by Mr. Trump, although not quite as often because now that he is in the oval office, he finds he has MANY MORE ISSUES TO DEAL WITH.

To further add insult to injury, campaign Trump insisted the wall would be built and that Mexico would pay for it.  That arrogant remark provoked vehement denials by Mexico’s president, Enrico Peña Nieto.  This unfortunate exchange has only served to damage our relations with our southern neighbor.

Illegal immigration is definitely an illegal act in my mind, just as any other illegal action. However, we do have a wall on many parts of the border, we do have border patrols AND we must take into consideration WHY are people trying to escape.  I am speaking ONLY about families, women and children either trying to extricate themselves from abject poverty or to join family members already in residence in the United States.  Drug dealers for the most part use many other undetectable means by which to import drugs into our country. There are tunnels that open up in San Diego, there are bundles that wash up on Florida shores.  There is BIG $$$ in drugs and no matter how tall, how big or how beautiful the wall is, the drugs will continue to flow because like any other product it really is all about SUPPLY AND DEMAND.  So look to our own, we are the consumers!

But enough about the philosophy and justification of The Wall – this is really about THE LIE that so many voters swallowed!  Guess what? MEXICO IS NOT GOING TO PAY $21 BILLION DOLLARS FOR THE WALL.  My God, $21 Billion dollars could cure cancer, feed hungry children in Appalachia, educate every child in the country and probably send them to college too.  Can you even wrap your head around  $21 BILLION DOLLARS?

Don’t take my word for it……………………

Although I practically took an oath not listen to or watch any of Donald Trump’s speeches, I broke my own promise last night.  For an hour I sat and watched and listened to the presentation to the Congress.  It’s true, he did sound like a politician finally BUT I thought that the people who voted for him believed he was NOT a politician, but rather an outsider he was going to drain the swamp.

There were LOTS of promises last night and as the bill-payer in this household, all I kept thinking was ‘I must be too old for the new math’!  If he makes deep cuts into the corporate tax and cuts taxes for the middle class and lowers the insurance rates and tells the hospitals to charge less for drugs and services, builds new bridges, repairs roads and airports …WHO IS GOING TO PAY FOR ALL THIS?

The first 30 or so days since his inauguration have been to say the least chaotic.  There were firings, leaks, tweets and turmoil – “SO SAD”.  But hey you gotta laugh sometime or you’ll cry so for your pleasure and mine and for those of you who were too tired last night to watch Stephen Colbert, here he is doing a live show post the speech to the Congress.
