It’s definitely Autumn now, the leaves are changing, the temperature has dropped, we turned back the clocks so it gets dark really early AND many of the guys are spending Sunday afternoons watching football on TV.  So getting into the spirit of the holidays, I found this Pumpkin Spice Cocktail that would be perfect for an afternoon of game watching with friends.

Pumpkin Spice Cocktail

Ingredients

BLUE MOON  Harvest Pumpkin Ale

FIREBALL Cinnamon Whiskey

Sparkling cider

Orange slices for garnish

Directions

Slowly pour half a bottle of pumpkin beer into your glass and wait till foam subsides

Top the beer with about a 1/4 cup of sparkling cider, leaving just enough room to add  a splash or two of the cinnamon  whiskey.

Garnish with a slice of orange and enjoy.

Butternut Squash

Some where between Sweet Potatoes  and White Potatoes lie the winter squashes and many people prefer squash dishes on their Thanksgiving Day menu.  There are numerous varieties to choose from:  I like Butternut Squash, Acorn Squash and Hubbard Squash.  I have served Butternut Squash Bisque as a first course at a few Thanksgiving Dinners.  You might enjoy including this tasty side dish this year at your annual Turkey Day feast.

WINTER SQUASH BRAISED IN CIDER

1 # delicata or butternut squash

2TBS butter

3 TBS finely chopped rosemary

3 cups unfiltered apple or pear cider

Salt

1 tsp balsamic or apple cider vinegar to taste

Freshly ground pepper

You could peel the squash, halve in lengthwise and slice into half moons OR you could buy butternut squash already peeled and cubed and if you’re like me, there is s a point where my time is worth more than the extra 50 cents  spent in taking the easy way out!!

Melt butter in a 12″ skillet over low heat until foamy.  Add rosemary, and cook over medium heat to flavor butter, stirring frequently, about 2 minutes.  Add squash, cider, and 1 tsp salt.  If squash is not covered by cider, add water to cover.

Bring to a simmer, and cook until squash is tender and cider has reduced to a glaze, stirring frequently, 30 to 40.  Sprinkle with vinegar and season with salt and pepper.  Transfer to warm serving bowl and serve immediately.

The simple joys of community, kids eagerly awaiting Santa Claus‘s arrival, free hot cider and ginger snaps, a crisp cold night and lots of fire trucks lined up on Main Avenue – that’s what was happening in Ocean Grove tonight.  Peter and I joined our friends, Trish and Ron at the Fireman’s Park early in the evening.  The volunteer Fire Department of our little town sponsors this annual event.

Santa’s sleigh was in the park  awaiting his arrival by fire truck!  That was a sight and a sound!  At least 6 fire trucks and an Emergency vehicle came wheeling down Main Avenue with sirens wailing and lights flashing.  The kids screamed and jumped up and down because Santa Claus was coming.  By the way, Trish did too!!!

We sipped piping hot cider and munched on ginger snaps and watched the long line of kids wend their way to Santa.  Once on his lap, you could see  joy on the faces of  the little ones – the believers!
