A couple of weeks ago, NBC News ran a story about penguins in New Zealand after an oil spill in the area (makes you want to quote Sarah Palin doesn’t it? “Drill baby drill“).  Anyway the oil spilled and the penguins got soaked in it.  In order to prevent the penguins from ingesting toxic oil when they preen themselves, a dedicated group of knitters is providing sweaters for the little creatures!  Take a look – you will have to watch a 28 second ad first but even that is cute.

Newt Gingrich

Newt Gringrich

Did anyone watch the debate between the Republican wannabee Presidents last night?  Apparently Newt Gingrich had something to say about the questions the panel posed.  He scolded Harris  for “trying to get Republicans to fight with each other.”  Yes, why does the evil media want people at a debate to disagree?  He believes the questions asked were meant to set one Republican against another and make everyone look bad so you all will re-elect Barack Obama

That’s just great, what a simple way to get our President re-elected.   Just think the of the money the Democratic Party will save, no campaigning necessary.

And why is it that this kind of paranoia, these crazy accusations and distortions always seem to come from the extreme right wing of the Republican Party

Official photo of Congresswoman Michele Bachma...

Michele Bachmann

Did you think I had abandoned this subject?  Seems so, I know, but I think it’s just that the flux of conspiracy theories had subsided somewhat.  But not for long…. Michele Bachmann, the erudite congresswoman from Minnesota came up with a doozy in June.  I have been remiss by not bringing this up sooner, sorry about that!

Maybe my timing is perfect, now that for at least the moment, the country isn’t going bankrupt.  No thanks to the Tea Party Republicans, that lunatic fringe group which has engulfed the Republican party.

Michele, a wannabe candidate for the Presidency (oh my dear God!) delivered the following diatribe accusing President Obama of secretly wishing Medicare would go bankrupt because then retirees would be forced to choose Obamacare.

“This hasn’t been talked about very much – the president’s plan for senior citizens is Obamacare,” Ms. Bachmann told party activists here. She added, “I think very likely what the president intends is that Medicare will go broke and ultimately that answer will be Obamacare for senior citizens.”

Are you f_____g kidding me?  I thought Sarah was one of the dumbest women ever to speak in public, shame on the Republicans for allowing her to make a mockery of a campaign for the Vice-Presidency AND now this idiot – HOW did she ever get elected???  You know the old adage, “if you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say anything”?  Well Michele should take this to heart and insert the word intelligent for nice.  With that montra, she would’t be able to speak for quite some time. Amen to that!

Steve Benen of the Washington Monthly said the following about Bachmann: “Bachmann’s principal problem is that she combines the worst of two important traits: she’s strikingly ignorant about public policy and she’s paranoid to the point of delusion.”

I literally can’t write anymore about her, she is an affront to my intelligence and that of my readers.

Nice ATM

Modern Day Bank Teller

It’s not that I’m not in favor of technology;  This from a blogger who has an Ipad, Ipod, Notebook, Netbook, Kindle, digital camera, Blackberry and desktop pc!  So I’m clearly in favor of electronic convenience.  Please note I said convenience and not efficiency.  I like things that go faster and I love efficiency BUT not at the cost of someone losing their job.

Every day our President is attacked about the lack of jobs, the rising unemployment rate and the weather.  Of course mortgage rates are at an all time low, a major depression  was diverted into a recession by assisting who? BIG BUSINESS, not welfare recipients, not Social Security pensioners but still Obama is at fault.  Why aren’t people being hired?  Why aren’t new jobs being created?

I heard something on the news the other night that struck a chord with me.  Stop and Shop, one of the nation’s larger chain of supermarkets was implementing the use of their portable scanner in the tri-state area.  Apparently this techno gadget was introduced in 2008  and is in use in many of the chain’s outlets.

Customers can scan their items as they shop, a running total is kept and you can even bag and pack your own groceries as you shop.  You check out on a machine on the way out.  I certainly see the advantaage to this;  you can monitor your total so you won’t be shocked at the check out counter.  And you can check out with a machine which will surely have a shorter, quicker line than the one you choose with a cashier.  So what’s wrong with this picture?

Well from my point of view, this is automation pure and simple and when the machine takes over, the person is gone. Their job has been eliminated, their paycheck has disappeared and now that person(s) is unemployed.  Maybe he/she is collecting unemployment, maybe trying to live off their Social Security check.  Whatever…the MACHINE is now in place where a real live person used to stand.  Maybe not always smiling, maybe not always packing your groceries carefully but nonetheless, a human being, someone just like you and me who tries each week to pay the bills with a shrinking paycheck.

The grocery cashiers that I have come  in contact with over the years and depending on the state I lived in seemed to fall in one of three categories;  High School and College students working part-time after school, house-wives  looking to add income to the family and young men and women who are not or did not go on to college take this job because their options are limited.  Then in days gone by for the most part, besides the cashier, there was a bagger;  Add to above categories, the retirees who gratefully took on this menial job because they enjoyed being out of the house and seeing people and the income didn’t hurt either.

The personal scanner in one fell digital swoop, swept them all out the door.  Now isn’t that efficient?  Just think, the personal scanner took the place of two people and IT doesn’t get lunch breaks, vacations, health insurance, 401 Ks.  And to boot it isn’t unionized the way most of Stop & Shop’s employees are!! What a great solution to a weakening economy!  Raise the prices of the products, eliminate employees and my guess is the profit margin is sustained  to keep its shareholders happy.

What a vicious cycle-there are no jobs, so big business eliminates more.  The people who were gainfully employed are now NOT.  Proponents of Big Business proclaim the problem with our economy is most certainly those at the bottom of the economic ladder, blood-sucking welfare and unemployment and Social Security SO what do those proponents think when it is Big Business who actually adds to those ranks by laying off real people so a machine can take their place??

It’s not just Stop & Shop, and they are hardly the first. Over the years, in my lifetime I’ve seen the milkman disappear, the bread delivery man, the telephone operators, the bank tellers replaced by ATM machines, the gas station attendants giving way to self-service pumps, the receptionist replaced by voice mail.  At my local Home Depot, there used to be at least 6 check out counters.  Now there are four and 3 self check-out machines!

What do you think?

What Bank is your Mommy?

It’s Wednesday and therefore time to explore another conspiracy theory!  Since I finished posting COUP D’ETAT ,  an extensive theory as to WHO was involved in the assassination of President  Kennedy, I wanted to continue with conspiracy theories.  In about a New York minute, I knew where I could find a treasure trove of theories to explore – The Tea Party Movement.

This week I found an article in The Economist in which Bob Inglis, a Republican candidate who lost in the primary speaks about a meeting he had with Tea Party-activists just before the primary. I’m going to include the link to the full article, however I just can’t resist posting the part where Bob Inglis is quoted.

“…This week’s Mother Jones has an interview with Bob Inglis, the Republican congressman from South Carolina who just lost his primary to a tea-party-backed candidate despite having a 93% rating from the American Conservative Union. Mr Inglis, a former right-wing firebrand from the GOP‘s Class of 1994, says he lost his seat because he simply couldn’t go along with the kind of radical conspiratorial rhetoric required to remain viable in Republican politics today. He tells the story of a meeting with tea-party activists that took place shortly before the primary.

‘I sat down, and they said on the back of your Social Security card, there’s a number. That number indicates the bank that bought you when you were born based on a projection of your life’s earnings, and you are collateral. We are all collateral for the banks. I have this look like, “What the heck are you talking about?” I’m trying to hide that look and look clueless. I figured clueless was better than argumentative. So they said, “You don’t know this?! You are a member of Congress, and you don’t know this?!” And I said, “Please forgive me. I’m just ignorant of these things.” And then of course, it turned into something about the Federal Reserve and the Bilderbergers and all that stuff. And now you have the feeling of anti-Semitism here coming in, mixing in. Wow.’ ….”

I just had to laugh, I mean REALLY! My sister-in-law Juanita just called me to tell me how excited she was because she is going to be in the audience of a Glen Beck show.  I had to laugh – as I said, I mean really what can you say when a family member (but NOT blood) actually says to you, ” I love Glen Beck”.  Can you imagine that we were once married to brothers?  I told her to call Tom, my son-in-law. who the last time Tia (as she is known to us) made mention of Glen Beck actually left the room (and it was his house!)

We love Tia, we really do but think she must be crazy or out of her mind which is probably redundant as she staunchly defends her Republican affiliation.  However, we take enormous satisfaction from the fact that she lives on the Upper West Side, a true hotbed of New York Left Wing Liberals – ta dah!
