About a week ago, I was in the Grove and it was a miserable night.  It had been raining for a while and due to the bad drainage problem on our street, there was a river of water about 2 feet wide I had to cross or jump over to get into my car.  I needed to go to the grocery store and it was getting late.  When I came out of the grocery store, I was pelted with hail.  Literally marble size balls of ice were raining down on me as I tried to quickly get all the bags into the car.  Driving home the road was covered with these rolling pellets.  And then I had to try to leap over the river while holding grocery bags.

After I got all of the groceries put away, it started to thunder and lightning.  At the first sound of thunder, the cats disappeared up the stairs and under the bed.  THEN, a crack of thunder hit and the whole house shook and I knew those cats were gone for the night.  It was so loud and so close that I immediately looked out the front windows to see what if anything had been hit.  I couldn’t see anything and then one, two,  three and then four and five fire engines roared up Broadway and turned north on Central Ave.   I called Susan and Jim and asked if they could see where the engines went and I kept looking to the north sky for that dreaded orange glow.  Jim said he could see the engines and he would check it out.  I soon received a call telling me that a house had been struck by lightning on Embury Ave but didn’t seem to be on fire although all trucks ready and on standby.

This is what Mother Nature wrought upon Ocean Grove that night!

Many Grovers were out in the wee hours of this morning taking photos.   Blogfinger is a popular locally focused blog site and several residents contributed photos and comments about the horrific fire this morning that robbed this Historic Landmark that we live in, of several historic Victorian homes.  The photos are all far better than mine and I would like to share them with my readers. Massive Blaze Destroys Eight Buildings on Surf and Atlantic Avenues, Including Vacant Former Hotel

It’s still dark, the phone is ringing?? It’s 5:30am! WTF? It’s Susan and from her voice I can tell she is upset.  FIRE!! Oh no, not again…just like last March.  She can’t tell where it is but the fire engines are going north on Central Ave.  I jump out of bed, and look out the door of the guest room and there it is-an eerie orange glow in the northern sky.  I’m going. Dress quickly, grab camera, license, gloves, hat, rain boots, car keys (I forgot my house keys).  Later I realized I didn’t have a lens in or a pair of glasses.  I drove up Broadway to Ocean Ave and went North to Ocean Pathway.  I parked the car in front of the Pavillion because I knew the police wouldn’t let me go any further.

I walked to Surf Avenue and saw the flames engulfing whatever fuel their greedy fingers could reach.   The fire apparently started in a construction site where a former boarding house stood and was in the process of being rebuilt as condos.  But in Ocean Grove, fire never stops where it starts.  Already the house to the west had flames shooting out of the roof.   The police tape was up so I could only get so close but clearly the fire had already jumped to the next street to the north-Atlantic Avenue.  Just like last year, the wind sent sparks flying and fanned the flames so they were able to leap to the houses behind the site.

People were gathering quickly, word of a fire in the Grove spreads as quickly as the fire does.   I watched a man try to get across the street – later I spoke to him and one of the houses that were being “streamed” with water simultaneously while the firemen valiantly tried to control the blaze or blazes as now there were at least 4 houses on fire.

I focused on this little bungalow thinking it would survive but then smoke started to seep out of the dormer.  OH GOD!!! I don’t think anyone had been in that house and I thought how devastating it would be to find out that the little cottage you left during the week or winter would be gone AND everything in it 😦  The bungalow was all that was left between the fire and the house of the man I met on the sidewalk.   The firemen were soaking his house from the front and the back as he paced back and forth but basically remained calm and resolute.

I imagined myself in hysterics jumping up and down in his place.  We have so many one of a kind collectibles in the cottage and worse yet the cats.   Cats are not like dogs who would follow you, come to you or bolt out-no cats would hide under the bed amidst the “stuff” stored there and you wouldn’t be able to get them out easily and quickly and unfortunately quickly is the key word in a town of wooden houses.  As far as I know, all animals got out, all the people got out although one elderly gentlemen was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

I got to the fire about 5:45am and the fires were roaring;  I left about 7am and now it’s 10:30am-some fire trucks have just gone west on Broadway, several flatbed trucks and pick-up trucks have gone east on Broadway which makes me think that some clean up is taking place.   In about an hour I have to pick up Peter and we will go by the site or as close as we can get and I hope to post “the remains of the day”.

My thoughts and prayers are with my neighbors who lost so much today.  I may not live next door to them…however, this is a small community and one person’s loss is felt by all.  The temporary shelter is up and running;  Susan brought dog food and leashes and I contributed kitty litter.  I’m so sad over this destruction-every historic home lost in this little community cannot be replaced.  The very charm of Ocean Grove lies in its Victorian cottages and of course its community.  And every time there is a fire, the phrase, “…there but for the grace of God…” comes to mind.

The Blizzard of 2010 arrived as predicted (so we can’t say we didn’t know it was coming) and in less than 3 hours our world was blanketed in a white powdery mantle.  Oh it looked so pretty coming down in big flakes.  And I noticed how quickly it was accumulating and decided to chronicle the snow storm – see previous blogs beginning with: Chronicle of a Snow Storm  .

Taking pictures from the front door or the back door only took a few moments so uh now, what do I do?  The photos in the Chronicle blogs tell the story of how white your world can be when 28″ – 30″ of snow fall in 24 hours but what was going on inside the house.  Well when you are house-bound for four days, you gotta do something!!  It was definitely easier for me than my husband, basically because I always do more things AND I have my computer.

  1. Playing on my computer has to be number one because I was on it a LOT every day;  I played  Scrabble with my Facebook friends, checked email, wrote blogs, cruised through Ebay and read other blogs.
  2. Nothing like daylight and the reflection of bright snow to show you where all the finger prints on doors and drawers are.  I spent some of each of the four days with Simple Green in one hand and paper towels in the other.
  3. Paid a lot of bills online.  Actually wrote out a couple of checks but couldn’t mail them!
  4. Because I was sleeping later and really had no where to go, I made breakfast for my husband. Yeah, really, bacon and eggs and coffee and an English muffin.
  5. Watched Dr. Phil and Judge Judy every afternoon – love them both!
  6. Ate Christmas dinner left-overs.  We had dinners of soup, stuffed shells, salad and broccoli. And dessert every night!!!
  7. Started to put away some of the Christmas decorations;  I would have done much more except that we couldn’t get to the garage to retrieve the bins.  But I did get to the back of the closet and organize a couple of boxes.
  8. Wrapped each piece of the Christmas china and packed in the one bin I had in the house.
  9. Knitted – I am way behind on a project, a gift for my new granddaughter, Francesca.
  10. Cut up the newspapers I needed for another little project.  Couldn’t seem to get beyond that part though.

Yay late last night the plow came up our side of Broadway, a sign that perhaps life outside of these four walls could start again.  I heard the truck and plow make a least two more passes.  I was hoping that the plow had not pushed a new wall of snow up against the car.  I mean let’s not forget that this cleared parking space cost me $ 40.

We had ventured out yesterday in hopes of putting Peter on the train back to NYC and his version of civilization.  Since the majority of my readers don’t have a sense of the roads and towns around us, I can’t relate the horror story of that adventure.  Let me just say that we left at 1:15pm and got home again at 4:15pm AND Peter never got near the train station!!! State highways remained un-plowed and abandoned cars littered whatever pathway we tried to take.  AND to add to the stress of this total misadventure, we were in an accident.   Yup, an ambulance side-swiped our car and we were STOPPED on the side of the road.  Well that all happened in Day 3 and this is supposed to be about Day 4.

Today Peter decided to dig a path to the shed.  Why? Well it wasn’t to retrieve the 50 lbs of salt he had stashed in there, and it wasn’t to get the folding shovel that is supposed to be in the car at this time of the year but for some irresponsible reason was still in the shed!!  NO, he wanted to get at the bird seed so he could at least toss some seed on the snow so that our little feathered friends and our furry little squirrels would have some sustenance!  Digging his way to the bird feeder would be another day – the drifts are just too high.

Hi! My Name is Lavinia

Hello everybody, I’m new to the family of sock monkeys who live here but I understand they are a pretty friendly bunch.   Well at least the two that live in the master bedroom, they’re young and kind of cool.  Not like the the two old fogies that seem to stay in the guest room – Mmmmm I wonder if they are guests??

See previous blog about Sock Monkeys listed below.

Cabin fever reached a high point last night with my disgruntled spouse.  He wants to be back in NYC and that’s that.  So we decided he should really attempt to go home today by train.  He was hesitant to leave me here with a snow bound car and two cats but I’m adamant about not leaving the car here and/or taking it back to NYC and we can’t park it.  This is what Day 3 looked like from my vantage point behind the door and in my warm cozy cottage.

Look What Drifts the Winds Hath Wrought

We did attempt to get to the train station and without going into the myriad lefts, rights, detours, traffic jams,  a side-swipe and numerous stops and starts I’m pleased to report that we are now safely back in the cottage.  The adventures of the afternoon included going the wrong way on a one-way street just so we could get back because we never did get to the train station.  It’s not safe out there for man or beast.  We are hunkered down for a couple more days.

And so the shoveling began.   A knock at the door surprised us and it was a young man who offered his services for snow removal.  Everybody is a capitalist at heart and his prices were too high for us so we bargained for $20 worth of shoveling – which meant a path from the front porch to the car and single shovel wide clearance along the front sidewalk.  It was a good deal for both of us, the snow was very powdery.

I got dressed and went out to tackle the car.   After about 5 minutes I realized shoveling out the car was a task beyond me, the drifts almost covered the car and there was no place to throw the snow since there were drifts all around the car too.

AND behind me was the MONSTER snow drift leading to the back door – it was now or never…. all the time I’m thinking of my heart because Peter reminded me that I’m taking Lipator for a reason, Geez!!

Thinking About Taking the Next Step

These photos were taken about noon today. Now it’s almost 3:30pm and once again the wind is howling, predicted to reach 50 mph.  Soon all our work will be covered with snow again.😦

Last night I listened to  the wind howling and Peter complaining about the wind, the snow and life in general lol! The lamp on the porch was swinging precariously and it was too cold and too windy to go out and turn it off and besides our real concern was that it fall over and break and live electricity hit wet snow so we just unplugged it.  And the wind howled some more.  By the time I went to bed I could see a huge drift forming along the sidewalk on the side of the house and another sweeping upwards to the shed.  I thought I would open the back door and take a photo BUT the door would not open-totally blocked with snow drifts.  Comforting thought as I went to bed knowing that in case of emergency we couldn’t get out the back door.   Actually the front door was blocked too but with repeated pushing, we could get it open and thank God, we had the presence of mind to put the snow shovels on the front porch.  AND thank me that I insisted we put the salt in the house and not outside like someone else wanted to.

This is what we woke up to this Monday morning:

Previously I tried to capture some of my Christmas decor in the cottage, but I don’t think the photos did justice to the look.   Murray was here for Christmas  dinner and he snapped a few “arty” pictures and I love them, so I’m sharing them!!
