FLIP CamcorderAnd I thought having one of the first car phones was cool – look where we are now…. I ‘m packing up the usual stuff to go to Ocean Grove for the weekend.   My friend, Barbara gave me a beautiful multi-colored case, like a cosmetic bag only a bit larger.  The pinks, purples and turquoise just insist that this bag be used in Ocean Grove where La Vie en Rose. I have found the perfect use for this gift.  Charger for the Ipod – yes.  Headphones for the Ipod – yes.  Battery charger for the camera – yes. Charger cord for the Kindle – yes.  Charger for the Blackberry – yes.  Extra batteries for the Flip Camcorder– yes.  If it were any larger I’m sure I could fit the power supply cord for the Laptop in it.

Thanks Barbara, I love it and it will be traveling back forth between my two lives.

The Cove - A Must See

I’m sorry that the headline for this blog is so graphic BUT I had to get your attention! Usually I try to write blogs that are tongue in cheek, satirical and amusing, but not always and this is one those- NOT FUNNY!  Two nights ago,  I watched and wrote about Inglourious Basterds. What I didn’t reveal was that I also watched The Cove.  This excellent film is essentially a documentary but done in a feature presentation style with a bit of a thriller aspect too.   The Cove won the Audience Award at the 2009 Sundance FilmFestival. It has been shown on NPR networks.  AND it has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Documentary Feature category.  I think it will win!   I couldn’t comment on the movie then and am not so sure I’ll really be able to articulate all that NEEDS to be said, shouted actually! So I’m shouting!!!!!!!

The Cove is one of the most disturbing, emotional, graphic, horrific, tearful, heartbreaking and heart wrenching,  frustrating, and angering, shocking, brave, upsetting, dismaying, sorrowful, maddening and really really difficult movie to sit through. So why should you see it?  BECAUSE….This is MURDER, it is happening NOW and once you know about it, you can’t just shrug your shoulders and say “oh well”.  Knowledge is powerful, however it comes with a responsibility to respond.  The truth must and will out. And once you know it, well each one of us has to decide how, when and what we can do.  I can’t do this powerful movie justice, so please read what some other people have to say about The Cove:

23,000 Dolphins are slaughtered each year in a hidden cove in Taiji, Japan. The Japanese government covers it up. No one could get in. (PlanetSave)

The Cove exposes an atrocity of unimaginable brutality. The dolphin slaughter depicted here is committed yearly and without knowledge of the general Japanese public, even though they could be buying highly-toxic mercury-laden dolphin meat disguised as fish from their local supermarkets. (PlanetSave).

What’s most unusual about this documentary is the undercover tactics filmmakers were forced to use to make the film. As soon as the documentary begins, you become aware that there’s resistance to the filmmakers’ presence in Taiji, and that the crew are not only being monitored, but are actually under threat of arrest which, under Japanese law, can last for many months, even years, without a hearing or trial. (About.com)

Be prepared: the film is as brutal and heartbreaking as the most alarming news footage you’ve ever seen of human natural disasters and tragedies such as hurricanes, earthquakes and terrorist attacks. (About.com)

And lastly, these are not my words but I am thankful that I can print here because I feel the same way.

That’s it! I’m putting my foot down! I am so sick of people saying “The Cove, oh no I can’t see that film, it’s about dolphin killing.” You stupid person, you’re wrong and I’m not listening to you anyone. I’m saying this as simply as possible. You are a bad person if you do not see this film. Everyone, EVERYONE needs to see The Cove. Not because you all need to go out and save Flipper but because it will inspire you to do something (not necessarily with dolphins) good in your life and leave you feeling empowered. You can make a difference in whatever way you want just like the people in this film are doing.

So stop your bitching and get out and see this movie. (Screencrave).

Inglourious Basterds

Countdown to the Academy Awards.  With 7 days left I have seen 7 of the 10 films; the latest was Inglorious Basterds.  I thought Hurt Locker was intense, and this was similarly nerve-wracking.  A little too violent for me -you know scalping scenes tend to be bloody! Brad Pitt was the big basterd and he was okay but this certainly was no stretch for him and you notice he was NOT nominated for an Oscar.  The accent/voice he was obviously directed to use,  was horrific.  And talk about a stretch – did any one of the characters  or anyone in the audience actually think his character was going to be able to pull off a believable Italian? Sounding like that?  That being said, I can’t imagine this movie winning Best Picture, BUT I am sure that Christopher Waltz will dance away (pun intended) with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.  Now that character was really the biggest basterd of all. Portraying a viciously exacting and and clever SS Colonel, he was outstanding! God it was so easy to hate him..

The probability of seeing the remaining three; Precious, Up, and The Blind Side are slim to none.  However, I am hoping to catch Crazy Heart before Sunday because I do want to see Jeff Bridges in this role.  Check in later this week if you’re interested to hear my predictions.

It’s only Saturday morning and already this weekend, I am struck by the assortment of friends and acquaintances I have in my life and the different world we all live in.

First and foremost because of the gravity of the situation, there’s my friend, Josh.  Josh called me (actually woke me up) this morning with a phone call and one sentence, “Turn on CNN and call me at the office!”.  Groggily I went into the den, and tried to remember what channel CNN was on.  OMG what a horrible shock – an MAJOR earthquake in Santiago, Chile.  Josh’s partner and my friend, Ricardo lives in Santiago.   Josh had spent the holidays there and was expecting to meet Ricardo in Prague on this coming Tuesday.  Thank God, Ricardo called Josh’s cell phone at 3:00 am and had left a message that he was safe as was his father who lived even closer to the heart of the city.  No further communication from Chile; you can’t get through on the phone, you can’t reach LAN airlines, the airports are closed and since Ricardo is a chief resident at the hospital, we can only assume he is there.   Please keep Chile in your prayers, it is so upsetting that this event is following so closely on the heels of Haiti.

ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE – My nephew Justin, lives in Japan and I have just tried to reach him thru Facebook because I’m not sure how close he is to the epicenter of the earthquake that struck there.  Apparently that quake hit offshore and the major concern is a tsunami – I know he surfs so he must be somewhat close the shoreline.  As I type  this and listen to the CNN minute by minute coverage in Chile, I am learning how quickly a tsunami can spread from shore to shore, country to

The volcanic Ring of Fire

country and even continent to continent – especially if the country is in the Ring of Fire (see photo). Do I have to worry about my own surfer son, Joel, who lives in San Diego and lives well within tsunami wave range?

Closer to home, several of my friends are clearly living in worlds apart. Last night I took Peter and his lifelong friend Murray out to celebrate their joint birthdays.  After a delightful dinner at Compass, a restaurant on the Uppper West Side, we went to see the show, BAWDY at the Triad BAWDY is an old time burlesque show; complete with bumps, grinds and tasteful striptease.   The show is headlined by Jesse Lutrell, a very talented, very energetic and very gay performer.  He is a gifted young song and dance man and he sings in a story-centric style, so reminiscent of the cabaret and nightclub acts dating back to the American birth of vaudeville.  SO how did we happen to be at this show?  In two words; Grace Gotham.  It so happens that Grace Gotham a/k/a Sarah Liston is a friend of ours.  We hadn’t seen Sarah and her husband, Dave in quite a while and were we ever surprised to learn that our friend, wife of an Episcopalian  Deacon and member of our local Community Board, was actually performing burlesque!!! Well why not? Sarah is a published writer and you can read all about her journey into burlesque in an article published in the magazine, Marie Clare which I have published on this blog.  She’s a hoot and very good I must add – and yes she really can make her tassles twirl.

Then this is the weekend that The Glen Beck show airs where my sister-in-law, Juanita is in the front row of the audience.  She sent an email blast to all of us with the air times.  I told you she wasn’t a blood relative!! So I am DVR’ing this program (with explicit promises to Peter that we will only just see her and shut it off) at a time when I’m sure it won’t interrupt another really important show I might be watching like Grey’s Antatomy!! LOL Now we know she is in another world.

Next, my dear friend and mentor, Joyce is in the hospital recovering from knee replacement surgery.  She is in her mid-seventies and has the body and muscle tone of the someone 20 years younger but any surgery as you get older is serious.  I’m happy to report that she seems to have come through it very well and may even be home tomorrow.  And then rehab starts.

Lastly, we are leaving in an hour to get out to Port Jefferson, LI to attend a surprise birthday party for my daughter’s mother-in-law.  Because of the misery of the snow, our car is snowed in and this being Manhattan, even if we dug it out (good thing we bought that extra shovel last week!), we would never find a parking place when we got home.  The streets in Manhattan are very messy because when they plow, all the snow builds up around the cars.  We have to take the LIRR and to board that train, we have to go diagonally across town to Penn Station.  Believe it or not, we will be leaving our apartment at about 1:55pm and should arrive in Port Jefferson Long Island at 4:40pm.  In that amount of time, I could have driven to the Jersey Shore and back or to Connecticut.  And then we have to come home again.  It’s going to be a long day….

The title of this blog is just one more rationale to think about while you are reading this excellent blog from Blogfinger. http://blogfinger.wordpress.com/2010/02/22/blogfinger-editorial-sleeping-watchdogs-in-ocean-grove/feed/ The Manchester Inn wants to sell out to a Developer of condominiums. Precedent is being set and if not kept in check, you will be astounded how quickly quaint Ocean Grove is no longer.

Where once many neighborhoods of Manhattan were populated with numerous Mom and Pop stores; the local dry cleaner, news stand, coffee shop, drug store, toy store, candy store, pet shop, pizza place, dress shops, bakeries and more – now there are large chain pharmacies such as Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid,  national brand clothing stores; Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy.  We have Petco, Home Depot but most of all – where some of those stores stood, the footprint of a 20 story apartment building stands.  And it is really simple math to go from there; the more people – the more services required.  Soon the need for more commercial space will be necessary and then????

Easy Off the Flesh Eating Cleaner

The oven at the shore was a mess – between dropping half a dozen hot hors d’ouevres (gooey cheese, dripping sauce) in the oven on Halloween because I was rushing, not thinking and possibly the black vodka had something to do with it AND followed by Thanksgiving (well you know what that does to the oven)- this oven was yukky.  I don’t really want to do this chore and would like to say “It’s not my job!” . Turns out I am blessed because Peter says he would be happy to do the dirty work.  I really think this posture comes from the fact that he is convinced he would do a better job and so I say Gay Gezinta Hate! I had brought the can of Easy Off down to the shore from our apartment  and handed it off to Peter.  He decided he would rather clean it the old fashioned way or his way as he puts it; lots of elbow grease, a razor blade, a Brillo pad and paper towels.  AND apparently  the can of Easy Off had no fizz left in it – I wonder how old it really was?  I could have brought it with me from Connecticut, (12+ years ago) as unbelievable as that may sound! OKAY so I never said that I baked a lot, or roasted for that matter but I DO cook!

I tossed the Easy Off can into our recycle bin and forgot about it.  Last night we were to bring the trash and the bottles, cans and papers out front for pick up this morning.  I grabbed the plastic bag containing the bottles and cans and SPLAT, SPLASH – I am covered in some foaming brown stuff and it has splattered on the walls, the cat litter box, and spilled on the floor.  I am screaming, “OMG, OMG ” and some other phrases which I will not print here so I can maintain my G rating.  I yell at Peter and say “Help me”,  “Get me something, I ‘m burning!” Here comes the classic husband response: “What do you mean you’re burning?” I replied with exactly what you would think I would say  which was. “I’m burning, what do you mean,  what do I mean? I’m burning!” At this point, I am ripping my jeans off, the right leg dripping with what looks like foaming coca cola or hot chocolate.  THEN it dawns on me that the Easy Off can lid was probably not on properly and the liquid dripped out and as we know just how caustic it is, it ate through the plastic bag which I had grabbed and was swinging towards the door and myself.  As my leg was burning, I began to wonder if Easy Off was flesh eating!! I put the jeans under the faucet, tried to wash my shirt sleeve off too and Peter tackled the brown spots all over my very special Metro slippers!

The morning after the night before – I am finding brown splatters EVERYWHERE and think that some drops ate away some of the color of linoleum floor.   Geez Louise!!!!

Easy Living

Here’s how a really great fun evening evolves: (in Ocean Grove)

I wanted to invite the Taylors over for dinner  and at the same time,  try to get together with Susan so she could get me started on my new knitting project (read obsession) and yes this is the same Susan and the same knitting that has popped up several times in these blogs. Peter wanted to watch a movie that he had just acquired – Easy Living which was written by Preston Sturges.  Those who know, know that Preston Sturges is one of his favorite screen writers – directors of all times.  Actually, begrudgingly, I have to admit that the Sturges movies I’ve seen have been terrific, replete with some of the world’s best ever character actors such as Franklin Pangborn and Luis Alberni.  But I digress (and that’s one of the best parts about a blog – you can!)

We could invite them over BUT really who wants to watch a movie on the  20 inch screen of a 1986 TV?  Luckily for all of us, the current economy and the latitude of friendship in this special place (Ocean Grove) allowed for a bold move on my  part.  I called Susan, told her what I had been thinking and then quickly negated it with a description of our TV as compared to their very large (42″-48″??) flat screen which is opposite their very spacious and extremely comfortable couch and without stopping to take another breath, just pushed on and suggested I bring the dinner to her house and we’ll watch the movie there!  Susan, being Susan, thought that was a marvelous idea.  We were all set then – she needed to provide the wine and dessert and the Peterlori catering company would bring the fully cooked meal to their door.

PROLOGUE:  We had drinks, hors d’ouevres and lots of laughs AND knitting before dinner and then a very good dinner if I do say so myself, with good conversation always with more laughs.  We watched Easy Living and The Producers!

There was one minor problem;  the advanced technology involved with the wide flat screen TV, the altercockers and the aspect ratio.  Sort of like the blind leading the deaf so we ended up watching the movie as if it were a pie crust being rolled out.

However, even in Ocean Grove with friends, leaving their home at 1 am seemed well you know….

It’s a weekend house (read relax on weekend), it’s in a vacation area. BUT it is a house, not an apartment with a Super, Handymen, an elevator and a laundry room.  In Manhattan, that means someone else shovels the sidewalk, you don’t have to make 8 trips from the car to the house carrying bags of groceries and I don’t have to transport the dirty linens and clothes from NJ to NY and then back again.

Friday: Breakfast at Nagle’s because there is no milk or orange juice in the house (we arrived last night). Go to hardware store to buy more salt -they are ALL OUT.  Bought a shovel to chip the ice away and a shovel for the car because next time if we arrive after a snow storm, we might even be able to dig our way out of the car and onto the sidewalk and up the stairs and to the backyard where the snow shovel is stored! There was also this handy little gadget up at the counter that I thought was ingenious – an extension magnet. It looks like a pen and instead of a point has a small round magnet on the end and you can telescope the pen-like case out.  So next time I drop and earring back or hair clip down between my dressing table and the bookcase,  I won’t have to ask Peter to move the heavy furniture so I can retrieve it.  There is another upside to this – I don’t have to acknowledge all the dust bunnies underneath the dressing table!!

Next we need to go to the storage area so we can put away the Mardi Gras beads, bring back a bin of stuff from our now defunct antique booth so I can photograph it all and put it up on eBay.  Also we need to check the oil in the Metro because it does leak a bit.

A quick stop at Habitats for Humanity to see if we need or must have some treasure we find there and we always do.  Down the road apiece and the next stop is the liquor store to buy wine as there is a dire need of red wine in Manhattan as well as gin for the shore house.

Next two stops: buy my Grande Americano at Starbucks today so I can have it tomorrow morning and not have to go out – again, this just isn’t New York City where I need only to walk a block to get to a Starbucks.  And while we are in that plaza,  might as well stop at Harmon Discount Beauty Supplies and get Peter the gooey stuff he puts in his hair and some hair clips for me.

Costco is next, gas is $2.45 per gallon – should we fill up here and now or wait till tomorrow or Sunday and hope that Citgo is the same price? We opt to wait, because unfortunately this is not the last stop.  Costco is a trip in itself.  You can never just go in and say you are only going to buy one thing. It doesn’t happen that way.   I went to pick up a prescription and if you don’t know, you should – Costco has the best prices ever on drugs.  And while we are here, we need to buy seltzer, blueberries and bananas.  We’re not done yet, the Costco ladies are hawking their food wares and who can resist having a nibble here and a bite there.  There was pizza, yogurt, dried blueberries, your choice of shrimp, salmon or crab salad, veggie chips, protein drink and salmon and cream cheese on cracker.  Sampling works on us – we left with some canned salmon and the yogurt as well as sardines and cranberry-grape juice.

I am already tired and can’t believe I still have to do grocery shopping at Wegman’s.  Both households need the essentials which are so much more reasonably priced in New Jersey so shopping is a weekly errand.  I LOVE Wegman’s and even if I didn’t LOVE it, I would still shop here in NJ because I totally detest and freak out in Gristede’s at home in NY.  Having lived most of my life in Connecticut where the grocery stores are CLEAN, bright and the shelves filled with multiple choices, I find grocery shopping in Manhattan almost impossible unless of course you to Agata and Valentina or Eli’s and there you will definitely pay for the quality.

Back in the car and on our way home, I remember that we need to go to Michael’s so I can buy some yarn.  Susan has promise to design a pattern for me so I can make something for Miss Finny, hopefully a sweater.  Susan has been very encouraging and helpful in getting me back to knitting, something I haven’t done in years!  Peter offered a comment about the knitting idea and said between the blog, Mah Jongg and now knitting, there would be no time left for him, lol lol – although I don’t think he was kidding.  Anyway, he has told me he does NOT want to be in the blog – that’s pretty difficult to do since so much of what we do is done together and I can’t always write in the first person singular when clearly there is another person involved.

Home Depot was on the errand list for today and we forgot to stop at the tile store also to check on finding tiles that match some we bought in South Africa two years ago.  As you can see, most projects take a very long time in our house.  He who shall not be named ( I love Harry Potter) and who does not want his name in this blog has to get some half inch round molding for yet another little project I have planned for our apartment in Manhattan.  I strongly suggest Home Depot and the tile store be put off till tomorrow.  Believe it or not, it is already past 5pm and I still have tons of stuff to put away when we get home.

Finally home, 6 trips from the car to the house, 45 minutes to put away the groceries, trying to sort what stays and what goes to New York and repacking the freezer so I can fit some frozen food I want to take back to Manhattan.   My freezer is something like Fibber McGee’s closet so anytime you want to put something in you literally have to take many somethings out.  I found a way – I took out a at least packages of left-over hamburger buns,  hot dog rolls (yes from last summer) and a few dinner rolls hanging around since Thanksgiving!! I tore them all up and threw the bread out for the birds and squirrels and now the snow in the backyard looks like it has freckles!  Seriously, I had a little talk with myself and likened my keeping fifty cents worth of rolls in precious freezer space to the argument I often pose to you know who about how much expensive New York City real estate certain videos, old magazines and lots of record albums occupy in our den.

I LOVE Wegman’s and even if I didn’t love it, I will still shop here at the Super Shop-Rite or Foodtown because I absolutely hate going into Gristede’s at home.  Having lived most of my life in Connecticut, I am used to large CLEAN, bright stores with shelves stocked with multiple choices.  Actually I won’t buy anything at Gristede’s unless it is prepackaged or non edible.  I know that sounds terrible and snobbish but I think the store smells bad.  I would rather go to Agata and Valentina or Eli’s and pay more but know I am getting great quality.

So, do you think I’m having fun?

A Harbinger of Spring? Yes well supposedly that’s what robins are and do.  Usually  it occurs on a

Robin Redbreast

day in late March or early April and by chance I happen to look out the window and yippee I am so excited – a ROBIN is in the yard! Is there anything more beautiful than seeing that big plump rosy breasted bird pecking away at the ground – it’s not lawn yet but sure ain’t snow anymore!! Well that’s what usually happens. SO HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN the fact that yesterday after we shoveled, cursed, dragged downed tree branches to the side of the house, swore, rehung the bird feeder, moaned, chipped away the ice, whined, salted the walkway and finally went into the house to get out of wet shoes and warm up cold hands – – there they were!!  At first it was just one, and then three and then I looked up into the tree in the yard behind us and it was dotted with  what looked like black silhouette blobs in the branches.  ROBINS EVERYWHERE!  I grabbed the binoculars to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating or had gone snow blind and yes they were big, they had red breasts (although most of theirs were orange-red) and gray tail feathers with white corners SO they must be robins.  Even checked the Birds of North America book.  There was a robin on the fence between our house and Mary and Mitch’s.  There was a robin on the walkway in front of the trash cans, there were a couple of robins in the tree that dropped the big branches in our yard.  There were robins all over the place.  Nicky (the cat) was sooooooo excited.  He sat in the back window, eyes darting back and forth, fascinated by the activity going on in his backyard.  When he spotted the tail feathers of one who was in the gutter, I thought he would fall off of his perch on the windowsill.  There is a foot of new snow on the ground and about 20 robins are hovering around and only God knows why.  Either they made a wrong turn or consulted a goofy groundhog because they were definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time.  There would be no worms for them today.  I felt really bad about the fact we had just refilled the bird feeder, put new suet up and hung corn for the squirrels but robins prefer worms and grubs and although they also eat berries, we had nothing for them.  After all the tsuris seeing them was a lovely treat. I did find an interesting fact in the bird book about their habits;  apparently robins will flock together in a winter roost, sometimes in the hundreds and even in the thousands. And then later in the evening while I was relating the bird incident to my brother-in-law Matt, he mentioned that I already told him about this (which I hadn’t) and then remembered that his daughter, Dani who lives in Virginia had just told him about a flock of robins landing in her yard a day or two  ago – so what’s going on here? Are the robins migrating north too soon? With nothing to eat, what will they do?  Turn around?

See new post: Baby It’s Cold Outside! Hello Robin Redbreast!!
