Laughing Gulls

I really like Sea Gulls;  They are raucous, clever, beautiful and so varied.  I used to think the only kind of Sea Gull was the one that looked like Jonathan Livingston Sea Gull.  But now, I spend time at the Jersey Shore I’ve come to know several varieties.  My favorite is the Laughing Gull.

Here's Laughing At You!

Here’s Laughing At You!

These sleek black-headed birds are seen in great numbers during the summer along the beaches and coasts of the Northeast.  Year-round they can be found around the Gulf of Mexico and the coasts of the Southeast.  They have long legs and fairly long wings.  Laughing Gulls eat almost anything, including food they catch or steal, handouts, garbage, and discards from fishing boats. They often congregate in parking lots, sandy beaches, and mud bars. Listen for their nasal, strident calls in flight, while feeding, and at rest.

Look for Laughing Gulls at the beach, especially during summer when their crisp black hoods and red bills make them easy to pick out from other gull species. You may also notice that their back and wings (the mantle) are considerably darker than common medium-sized gulls such as Ring-billed Gulls; this can also help you to pick them out from a crowd.

Soaring

I like to feed the gulls any leftover stale bread I may have or those fried greasy crinkly things you get from the Chinese restaurant, they love them.  Anyway, my favorite gull to feed is the Laughing Gull.  They seem smarter than the others and they know it.   While hoards of gulls will gather on the sand below the dock where I am tossing the bread, each one trying to steal the piece that their neighbor has instead of going after a fresh one, the Laughing Gull disdains to join the crowd on the sand and circles me coming closer and closer.   He is quite happy to receive his bread in the air, swooping under it to catch it in his mouth or darting sideways to snatch it mid-air.  They will hover over my head like a helicopter waiting for me to toss a piece up in the air.

Murray Head has captured  fabulous photos of  these delightful creatures and I’m happy to share them with you.

Frosty Mocha Milk Shake

Frosty Mocha Milk Shake

JUST the thought of having this milkshake is literally making my mouth water….If you are a follower of this blog you know I LOVE ICE CREAM!  And that love comes in the form of a cone, a cup, a cake and for sure a milk shake!  Now that summer is really heating up, ice cream is my obsession.  Seriously I would eat ice cream for every meal if I could and wash the meal down with a “malted”.

INGREDIENTS

4 scoops of coffee ice cream

2/3 cup of whole milk

2 TBS dark cocoa powder, plus extra for garnish

1 TBS instant espresso powder (think of those K cups at your office)

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/8 tsp almond extract

1/2 cup grated dark chocolate

1/2 cup heavy cream, whipped for topping (optional) (or Reddi Whip if you must)

DIRECTIONS

In a blender, or using an immersion blender, pulse the ice cream, milk, cocoa powder and espresso powder to combine.

When mixture is smooth, add extracts and dark chocolate.  Blend to combine.

Pour the milk shake into two glasses and top generously with whipped cream.

Sprinkle some cocoa powder on top

Serve immediately

BLACK FRIDAY is one crazy, clever retail gimmick.  Get up at 4:00am to push your way into an overheated department store so maybe you can snag what? – the sought-after toy of the moment? REALLY??  The day after Thanksgiving IS the day to go shopping for Christmas presents according to a popular manipulative tradition dreamed up by the retail community.  This day which is orchestrated to create consumer frenzy is a store’s way of making up money lost through the normally slower summer season.  Add the proximity to the Christmas gift-giving holiday and you have the makings of a retail perfect storm.  They hope to end up in the black and you might just end up in the red.

Personally, Black Friday holds no appeal to me and never has.  I haven’t shopped in a Mall for a present or for that matter myself in a very long, long time.  Of course when you live in New York City, going to a mall is not really an option but I stopped shopping for Christmas presents in a mall years ago.  I like to give either really unique personalized gifts or unusual gifts.  I don’t buy sweaters, hats, ties, shirts etc as gifts.  I assume most people buy their own clothes, their own perfume and for the most part their own jewelry.  However,  jewelry is the exception to the rule;  I might purchase a ring, necklace or bracelet for someone but it won’t come from a department store and it probably will be vintage.

Tomorrow, I’m going to Walmart ONLY because it seems to be the ONLY store in my area that carries an item I need, not want but actually need. It’s not a gift, it’s a repair item.  Other than that one foray into a retail store, I hope to avoid the maddening crowds.

Here we are again at the beginning of another week except this time, it’s really the last week of the summer.  I just never got out of the school calendar mentality because I HATE to see summer end.

Clutching  tightly sands of summer days! – Lori

However, not all of us feel the same as evidenced by this contribution to the Six Word Memoir Project:

Boiling summer finally over? Enough already! – Gail

And one from a Fab Foto Friday fan:

Keep the photos coming – they’re great! – Susan H-aka  Celtic Lady

What are you last or lasting thoughts of this summer? Can you distill them into just Six Words, no more, no less.  It’s a challenge but not as hard as you might have thought.

Endless Summer

I LOVE to post your contributions!!!!
