I promised to get up early on Tuesday so we could go to the grocery store (nothing like LAST minute shopping) and buy the ingredients needed to make desserts for Christmas Day. We are ALL invited to Chiara’s friend Laura’s house for Christmas dinner! When I say ALL I mean we are 13 plus 3 kids and heading to a household that presently has at least 6 adults and 2 kids of their own. Whoooo eeeee!
Well, I didn’t get up that early at least not by Clark family standards but I was fortunate enough to get up after my nephew Justin did, because he made me a great high-protein breakfast which I thoroughly enjoyed. Poached eggs, lentils and some salsa and it was delicious. Tom suggested he go to Starbucks and was swiftly informed that was NOT happening. Time, this was all about time! We had to grocery shop, Justin needed to go to a store, and Chiara needed to go to Home Goods to buy a trifle bowl. A couple of weeks ago, I suggested to Chiara if she told me what she was preparing for Christmas Eve dinner, perhaps I could bring a recipe or two and make something for her and I would tell her what to buy before I arrived. I never heard. I did pack a few holiday recipes (hey, you never know) . A half hour after I arrived, Chiara informed me that we were responsible for desserts to bring to the Christmas dinner and luckily two of the recipes I had with me were for two lovely desserts. BUT she didn’t have half the ingredients which was the main reason we had to shop TODAY, Christmas Eve – Just sayin’!
Tom, Brad and I hop into Tom’s Audi and immediately make a blood pact of omertà and head to the nearest Starbucks. First things first. Needless to say it was packed and we probably lost at least 15 minutes that we were going to have to make up at the grocery store. Fueled with appropriate amounts of caffeine, we headed to Publix. Brad decided he was going to wheel the cart, I had the grocery list and we never really knew what part of the store Tom was in until perchance we met him in an aisle.
The problem lay with the Lady Fingers. I hunted through the store asking clerks where might they be. The bakery area was all out but why didn’t I check Aisle 11 and sure enough there was something passing itself off as lady fingers when really all they looked like were small tube-like sugared cookies. I had to make do with these, we were running out of time. And because we were sort of rushing, I realized as I was checking out that I hadn’t brought in the canvas shopping bags – going green and all that jazz. So we just put the groceries in the cart, a few plastic bags had already been filled and I would repack the cloth bags in the parking lot. In the 85 degree heat, that didn’t make a lot of sense and was quite a sight.
Next stop, Walmart, we still need to buy ice and a cooler and just maybe Walmart might have the right Lady Fingers. Naturally they did not. I wasn’t surprised because when we were in Publix and I asked 3 different employees about where might I find the marscapone cheese, they looked at me like “What?” That and the fact that the store didn’t carry Ziti, did not carry DeCeco brand pasta, very little Barilla and a lot of Muellers, I knew I was in Florida!
We got the cooler and the ice that Chiara had ordered and somehow on the conveyer belt 3 yoga mats and a soccer ball – uh huh, Tom!
Back at the house as I’m unloading groceries in a fury and trying to rearrange the refrigerator for the third time to make room (consolidate, consolidate), Dennis is chopping lemons and limes, Juanita is working on something and Belle is making quinoa.
I have Chocolate Pumpkin Tiramisu and a Cranberry Trifle to whip up. I start with the tiramisu and discover there ‘s no Confectioner’s sugar in the house! Now I have to send someone out to the grocery store again and maybe they’ll even find the correct lady fingers. In the meantime in case they don’t, I assign Peter to figuring out how to slice these cracker-like cookies in half lengthwise. I try one knife, Dennis suggests another knife because they are crumbling as they are being cut. Peter to the rescue! He goes into the garage and comes back with a hacksaw. We all looked at him aghast! However, the saw precisely cut the cookies and they laid in wait to see if the others would show up.
Meantime two bags of cranberries were bubbling on the stove and hopefully popping open. Teamwork prevailed and Peter took out the big Sunbeam mix master because there wasn’t a working hand mixer in the house and he whipped the marscapone and heavy cream. I thought I could put the trifle together forgetting that the cranberry filling actually had to be cool, so that get’s shoved into the refrigerator. So now everything has come to a screeching HALT! No sugar, no tiamisu, no trifle really underway. And I still had the baked ziti to make.
By the time Laura, Jim, Addie and Collins arrive, we have put together apps, dessert, tableware, pork loin, cooked the brussels sprouts and chopped the lettuce. They brought so much food: sausage and peppers, Meatballs in gravy, and a lasagna and some Italian desserts. I baked the ziti and put it in the refrigerator lol.
People came, people left, beer pong was played, the music never stopped, glass piled up and it was time to do some clean up. Oh, I guess I forgot to tell you that the dishwasher was not working! This afternoon it was in cycle and Tom opened the door and that was that. It wouldn’t drain, it wouldn’t reset, it wouldn’t make a sound. All the Dads tried to fix it, Tom called the 800 number to see if we could get service – uh really now, it’s Christmas Eve! So all the dishes were taken out and washed by hand and tonight even though we ate on disposable plates, there were platters and bowls and pots to wash well into the evening.
JUST before we were about to pack the little ones off to bed, Finley is stricken with the thought that OMG we didn’t make the cookies to leave out for Santa! That did it, NOBODY was going to bed till we baked cookies. Laura’s mother-in-law stepped in and supervised the slice and bake process and soon we had a batch of peanut butter cookies topped with M&M’s. OK now, it’s time for all good little girls to go to bed with admonitions that nobody is to get up and go downstairs till we all get up.
Personally I couldn’t wait to snuggle in bed and have sugar plums dance in my head.
Merry Christmas to all to all a good night!

Monday 6:30 am Oh what a night….I’m not sure that I ever fell asleep, I know I dozed now and again because I have some remembrance of short dreams. Trying to sleep in the seat was just awful; No way to get comfortable, no way to stretch out your legs and as I had been warned, it got really cold in the car last night. I kept clutching my cotton shawl around my shoulders and arms. The eye mask and neck pillow only helped a little. I doused my eyes with drops in hopes that they would stop feeling like sandpaper and asked Peter to get us coffee.
He brought back two steaming cups of tasty coffee and convinced me that we should go to the dining car for breakfast. I really didn’t want to be in bright lights but ok, he wanted a real meal so we went. It was still dark out! This is a trip of many firsts; I’ve never traveled this far or overnight on a train before, I never ate in a dining car and I surely never saw the sun rise in Savannah Georgia sitting at the window of a lovely dining car! We sat across the table from a nice man and his young son who were on their way to Florida to celebrate Grandpa’s 100th birthday! It was really nice sitting at a table with a white tablecloth and having someone wait on you after the hours spent in our seats eating carrots and humus and fitfully trying to catch some zzzz’s
It’s now 8:30am and my husband is already napping – he who claimed 4 hours of sleep was quite enough for him!
NOON We didn’t make reservations for lunch, the food is not so great for the price so I guess some of now warm snacks left from yesterday will be our lunch. I just watched my travelogue documentary on the Northern Lights narrated and starring Joanna Lumley. I love this film; I want to duplicate her journey, it was amazing! We are just past DeLand which is southwest of Daytona so we are still pretty far north in Florida. I’ve been tracking our progress with the GPS on my phone. I can see and feel just how long this day is going to be.
The rest of the afternoon was all about reading and looking out the window and standing in line to go to the rest room. Actually there was no line at the end because both the toilets weren’t working, but this is probably TMI. Overall, the fact is that riding an Amtrak train is certainly not the Orient Express. Okay of course it’s not the Orient Express, The Blue Train of South Africa, and for sure my trip in no way resembled the trip Cary Grant took in North By Northwest.
Anyway it was absolutely wonderful to step off the train and be greeted by my daughter and my sister-in-law. Soon we were at her house, the kids came running out and the smiles on their faces and the shrieks of “Gig, Gigi” made all the long hours of the night before seem very far away.
The girls have been staying up late the past few nights with all of the company arriving at their house and so convincing them it was bed time took a little negotiation and a LOT of “but what is Santa going to think?” I even invoked the ELF last night! Surely you know about the “ELF”. He or she ELF is endowed with magic powers which allow the ELF to report back to Santa Claus each night on the day-long behavior of the house’s young denizens. Not only does he snitch, he also moves around so each morning you have to find him – it’s always good to know where your elf is. However, I can see that the real issue here is what do we use as leverage after Chistmas?
You know the luxurious feeling advertisers try to describe like a bubble bath, a certain lotion or even your bed at some national chain hotel? Well, when I laid my weary body down on the bed last night, I thought I had never felt anything so soft and cosy and comfortable! AHhhhhh!

We pulled into Philadelphia at about 4:45pm and stayed in the station so engineers could come aboard and fix the falling out window. Yes that’s what I said; Earlier when we were Newark and the conductor came through to check tickets, the people two rows ahead of me told her there was something wrong with their window. Oh my, wrong? I should say so, apparently it was out of its frame! One hour and four hard-hatted engineers later, the window was replaced.
By 6:45, we’ve snacking on cheese, crackers, carrots and celery and almonds and it’s that time; We have to get ice from the bar car; I brought a little travel shaker and now someone is very happy, not to mention that he is sitting by himself on the other side of the aisle since the window fiasco necessitated several groups to move to another car in order to keep the families together!
7:45 I know we are already at least 45 minutes behind schedule and now we are in Washington D.C. and once again, engineers have descended upon the train. The window has not been fixed correctly. Three hard-hats all agreed that something is not right and they have shut the power off in our car and here we sit.!!!
9:00 Earlier when the man came through the car asking if anyone wanted to make dining car reservations and we were informed of the 5:00 (must be the Florida early bird special) only time and we declined, he told us we could go to dining car at 8:30 and perhaps there would be a table. If not, we also had the option of ordering some food and bringing it back to our seats. So at 8:30pm Peter went to the dining car and immediately returned as the line was all the way into the next car. He went back at 9:00pm and the dining room was closed. SO MUCH FOR DINNER!
Finally at about 9:30 we went to the Bar Car and ordered a Tempting Turkey Sandwich to split. I’m not even sure it was turkey. At 10:30 they turned off the lights in the car but I continued to read for at least another hour hoping I would feel sleepy – I did not.
I never fell asleep all night!! I know I dozed off several times because I had little dream vignettes but the arms of Morpheus were elusive and trying to sleep in a seat titled ever so slightly back was really impossible for me. As I roamed down the aisle to the rest room I was envious of all the travelers sacked out and sound asleep!

SUNDAY
Well, I’m off on another adventure to Florida! Usually the “fun” begins when I’m there and I amuse my readers to no end with accounts of the daily craziness. NOT SO this time! Let the games begin!
Today is Sunday and after racing around to finish up packing, getting a pedicure, trying on 3 different things that did NOT fit and not being able to locate one of the cats (we finally did) we finally left our apartment. Since we were leaving late (apparently my fault) (NOT), tempers were already running high. Add the 71 degree weather in the no-longer-air-conditioned apartment AND picture this – I have my rolling suitcase with a heavy tote bag on top of it, carrying my computer over my shoulder and one large canvas bag of Christmas presents; I’m wearing flip-flops because I don’t want to squish my new pedicure and all black because that’s what fit that would be ok to sleep in. Peter is carrying a suitcase that must weigh 25lb on his shoulder that pulls his sport jacket down and he’s carrying another canvas bag with Christmas presents and a bag that has some last minute snack food I scavenged from the refrigerator and cupboards. Actually the snacks are leftovers from Wednesday night’s gathering!
Hailing a cab turned out to be fairly easy but of course we got a driver who was indecisive about the fastest way to Penn Station. First he started west on 86th St and then thought the FDR drive would be better so he U-turned. The Drive was ok but when he exited at 34th St and headed west on 35th St, we virtually crawled across town. I was already overheated, cranky and watching the meter climb was making me crazy. $22 later we arrive at Penn Station a.k.a. Penn’s People Zoo. It was MOBBED and it was hot.
We were supposed to leave by 1:30pm but by the time we walked out the door it was almost 2pm. Our intention was to get to the station an hour early so we could check to see if there were any cancellations for a roomette. There were none, the train is sold out! Oh, didn’t I mention that by the time we booked the trip they were no more roomettes left? And why did we book so late? Look to my right…. therefore we are in for a 26 hour train ride in Coach seats, no beds. I knew right away it was Christmas since there “was no room at the inn”.
Getting onto the train was like being part of a herd of cattle. There’s a cop at the top of the stairs next to the ticket agent and he’s shouting “Keep the families together, keep the families together” which means there are straggling kids with wheeling suitcases trying to push through the 5 lines of passengers trying to reach the top of the escalator!
I boarded the train and turned right like the conductor said only to come to an immediate HALT. There was a family of four trying to get out of the car against the tide of us trying to get in the car. This necessitated a strange dance backwards of several people and their luggage with no place for them to back up. Finally they got off and I lunged forward hoping to find two vacant seats together, lol lol. Of course there were no seats. I was ahead of Peter so I dropped one bag down on one seat and across the aisle and one row forward, I dropped another bag. Then I tried to negotiate with the woman in the second pair of seats. “ Excuse me ma’am would you mind switching your window seat here for the one over there so I could sit with my husband”? She looks at me as if I asked her to move to rest room. I try again and she leans over to look at the seat I’m pointing at and says, “No, I think I’d d rather be here”. At this point Peter comes up the aisle and sees that I’m not standing in a pair of seats and I’m already putting the bags of Christmas presents up on the rack. He loudly says, “What, aren’t there 2 seats together?” And then adds, “Well can’t you ask someone if they will move?” I tell him I did but no one wants to. I guess that did it because the lady announced she would move. I said, “Bless you, thank you, you are so kind and you have no idea how he’s been, I’m never traveling with him on a train again!
Once underway, the train cooled down a bit and we settled in. As soon as one of the conductors came by, I inquired about Wi-Fi and was informed there was no Wi-Fi on the train and here I thought I would be writing my blog, playing scrabble online, cruising through ebay and checking in on Facebook, Not Happening!
Shortly thereafter, a man came through asking is anyone wanted to make reservations for the Dining Car. We looked at each other and thought a change of scenery would do us good later on so I told Peter to make it for 8:00pm. Well that wasn’t happening either because the only reservation he had was for 5:00pm and it was already 4:30pm! And I wanted to buy a large sub for us to split on the train since everyone told us how expensive the food was and Peter said not to AND I listened to him, so really who’s the schmuck?

I have just found the perfect Foodie gift for my Mah Jongg group or your Bridge Club or your Book Club gang. When we play Mah Jongg it is usually on a card table and there is hardly room for the racks and the tiles let alone the glasses of wine and nibbles on the table. I often hope that I might be able to reach another surface with my wine glass because I’m always afraid the glass of red wine will get knocked over and Oy what a mess!
In my group we set up the snacks in a convenient location but not on the table; Of course everyone wants to bring their carrot sticks, cheese and crackers and chips to the table with them and again we have this cramped situation with either people eating off of napkins or the possibility of a dish falling to the floor.
Well, I’ve got the solution!!! Nibble Coasters!!

Two In ONE!
Isn’t this a fantastic idea? I love it. It was being offered at URBAN OUTFITTERS but they’re sold out. You can find it on Ebay or Convenient Gadgets. This ceramic coaster works just as well with a coffee mug and a cookie. Fantastic!!

If that title didn’t grab you, I don’t know what will!!! LOL LOL. No, I haven’t lost my mind or forgotten what these count-down blog posts are all about – Gifts for the Foodies in Your Life.
We know that there is a broad definition to the word Foodie; Some like to eat out and experience a wide range of ethnic foods or dine exclusively at restaurants owned by renowned chefs, some prefer the ever-changing and exciting world of cocktails which often includes revivals of the classics. Then there are creative cooks at home, the bakers and candy-makers as well as the gadget-collectors!
This post is for young emerging generation of cocktail connoisseurs. They started out drinking the sweet, syrupy fruit-flavored drinks like all things made with Raspberry Vodka, Orange Vodka and every other fruit vodka. Since vodka doesn’t have too much flavor of its own and can be disguised with fruit flavorings, the newly-legal and the many under-age drinkers preferred drinking the equivalent of a cherry soda with a kick! And some resorted to Jack and Coke or Jack Daniels and Red Bull (OMG) to get their highs.
But now, I see the Gen X and Gen Y crowd (well especially here in New York City) growing into sophisticated crowd of cocktail connoisseurs. They meet at the secret speakeasies around town and order classic cocktails, some with a modern twist. Manhattans and Martinis, Single Malt Scotches, and aged Bourbons are among the new old preferred drinks of the day.
Additionally, one of the new hot buzz words in the Foodie world is small batch which could be described as artisanal and sometimes even local or regional unique offerings from private label companies. In that vein, today’s gift idea is: AGED CITRUS BITTERS by Five by Five Tonics Co.

Aged Citrus Bitters
The company’s description of their product is as follows:
Five by Five’s Aged Citrus Bitters are unique in that our aged component does not come from aging the bitters themselves, it comes from selecting citrus varieties at various stages of maturity from fresh to aged. This gives the Aged Citrus Bitters a wider range of flavors than you will find in any other citrus bitters available from the aromatic flavor of citrus peel to the savory flavor of aged tangerine peel. This is a truly handmade product crafted meticulously from botanical to bottle.
Mixing notes: This is an extremely versatile citrus bitters able to mix well in all traditional uses of citrus bitters, while also imparting enough balanced savory flavor to shine in cocktails where normal citrus flavor wouldn’t. These bitters pair well with brandy, vermouth, and work exceptionally well in a martini.
Tasting notes: Savory and warm with complex citrus notes.
And as a bonus I’m including their recipe for a FIVE SQUARED VIEUX CARRE
5 Squared Vieux Carre
Stir 50 times over ice and strain into a cocktail coupe. Garnish with a orange peel.
Notes: I’m sure there are many of you crying out that the Vieux Carre is not a cocktail that is served up. Traditionally the Vieux Carre is served in an old-fashioned glass over ice. I like to think of this more as a Nouveau Carre for two reasons. One, being that this drink is best made with high quality spirits, serving it up will not allow these flavors to be diluted. Also, the keen-eyed observer can see the absence of Benedictine in this recipe. I feel the herbal component of this cocktail is handled quite nicely by employing both of Five by Five’s bitters flavors and makes this gem of a cocktail a bit more accessible to the home cocktail enthusiast.

While cooking dinner this evening and thinking about writing today’s Foodie gift blog, it occurred to me this past April I found a wonderful new kitchen tool and I should write about it. My husband and I and his sister and husband took a trip to Quebec in April. We thought it would be lovely and spring-like; Instead, it was cold, windy and rainy. However, we were undaunted and covered the Lower Town and the Upper Town. One afternoon while strolling though the Lower Town in Old Quebec City, Stacey and I wandered into a lovely shop filled with kitchen ware and flatware and cookware. We are both Foodies and love to cook, so we spent considerable time picking up item after item, many of which we had never seen at home.
We came across a pair of strange-looking scissors. Fascinated, we asked the clerk about them and were told that these shears were meant to julienne herb leaves or thinly slice mushrooms, lettuce, and even ham. Immediately I knew I had to have these scissors to slice my basil leaves over my juicy Jersey tomatoes. Not only would the little shreds be distributed more evenly over a caprese salad, the slices would release some of the basil oil.
Made of stainless steel and with 5 blades, this is one of the most useful tools in my kitchen. Available for purchase online from several stores as well as Amazon, you can purchase these MASTRAD shears for under $10.00
