OK clearly this question is limited to those of us who are of either a certain age or are collectors.

Unfortunately I fall into both categories although admittedly an avid collector, records is not one of my collection addictions.  No, I leave that one up to Peter.  Yesterday was a sweet example of making a collection work for you;  Finley came over for a visit and since we know she is fascinated by all media we thought we would expose her to kiddie records from the 40’s and 50’s. We happen to have an extensive library of kiddie records because Peter’s father was a partner in Record Guild of America, a leading manufacturer of wonderful laminated and illustrated cardboard records for kids to play on their very own phonographs.   I had a really cute red and white record player like a little suitcase.  Anyway, we finally found an old one in good condition and couldn’t wait to introduce little Finny to this particular pleasure.  We thought she would be fascinated by the fact that there was sound but no moving pictures.  And she did love it!  After showing her how it worked, Peter let her put her own records on and move the needle arm and play the records.  NOW, I know I sound just like a proud grandmother, but really, she is only 2 yr. 8mo old and she quickly grasped the concept and knew to move the arm gently.  It was quite a treat for us and we hope she enjoyed it as well.

The picture goes round 'n round!

Now here’s the good part;  Mommy showed up with little Francesca for a short visit and the first thing Finley said to her was, “see my DVD‘s”  – oh well…..

So back to the first album you ever bought.  The first album I ever purchased was “Only Love Can Break A Heart” by Gene Pitney. First of all, I thought the song was great and I also liked The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence – what can I tell you – I was a strange teenager I guess.  The reason it was probably my first album purchase was because by the time it came out, I had some of my own money to spend, whether it was from babysitting or my weekend work at The Cenacle (that’s a whole other blog).  I was a rabid Elvis Presley fan but when he was really at his height I only owned his 45 rpm records, probably my father bought them for me.

So I’m throwing out this question in hopes of getting some interesting replies from everyone.  It will be fun to see just what was the first album you bought?

The back story to this photograph is that my lovely daughter Chiara got married in June ’08 and although they were living in Boston, Tom and she got married in New York City.  So they weren’t really here much before or after the wedding.  They came in to get the license and left the day after the wedding for a two week honeymoon and returned directly to Boston.

Soooo, Chiara had a New York license from before when she lived here and it was in her maiden name;  It hadn’t expired so she kept it.  Time passes, one child is born, Finley Ray.  More time passes and another child is born, Francesca and still the license had not expired.  Chiara was still in Boston all this time.

This January they moved back to New York City, so she has been here for 3 full months, (can you see where this is going?).   She just had her 34th birthday last week and Tom bought her birthday cake.  I think the message is pretty clear – When the hell are you going to change your name?

February is about to end and this being the last Thursday of the month brings our MOST ROMANTIC movies list to an end.  I have 10 more movies to list and a bonus film, strongly suggested to me by my nephew, Justin.

  1. How Stella Got Her Groove Back Again (1998) – Well, one way to get your groove back is to groove with a hunky, good-looking stud 20 years younger than yourself.  Taye  Diggs  Bassett won a NAACP Image award for her performance.
  2. Bridget Jone’s Diary (2001) – Rene Zellweiger won this Brit part over two Brittish actresses: Emily Watson and Helen Bonham Carter. AND she gained 25 pounds and earned a Best Actress nomination.
  3. Shrek (2001) – He doesn’t want to get involved and she’s not happy that he’s green and ugly. Howver, the wannabe Princess is really an ogre herself so in the end, all’s well and they live happily ever after to the tune  of hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office.
  4. Love Actually (2003) – This is one of my all-time favorite movies;  Peter and I watch it every Christmas holiday season.  We laugh and always cry over Emma Thompson’s pain caused by her husband’s interest in a sexy co-worker. There are TEN different love stories unfolding in this romantic comedy. I LOVE Hugh Grant, Bill Nighy is hysterical, Colin Firth is sincerely endearing and who doesn’t love Liam?
  5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) – Jim Carey and Kate Wynslet in this romance/sci-fi movie. Charlie Kaufman won an Academy Award for his original screenplay.  Sometimes you need an outside force to discover what you knew all along.
  6. The Notebook (2004) – This is an epic love story based on the beloved best-selling novel by Nicholas Sparks.  Rich girl falls for poor boy, they are separated by WWII and ultimately find each other again seven years later.  Ryan Gossling and Rachel MacAdams
  7. Pride and Prejudice (2005) – A classic romance based on a classic- Jane Austen‘s novel of the same title.  Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfayden prove that infatuation beats out social obstacles.
  8. Brokeback Mountain (2005) – This Western was one of the first to feature a love affair between two men. Critically acclaimed around the world, winning many awards at festivals and nominated for Best Picture, starring Heath Leger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
  9. Twilight (2008) – The vampire romance that captured the hearts of teens and adultsarlts around the world.  Girl meets boy, boy is a vampire – Kristen Stewart and Robert  Pattinson heat up the screen on and off.
  10. Slumdog Millionaire (2008) – Another romance  on and off the screen, Freida Pinto and Dv Patel quickly discover the intense chemistry between them. The movie won Best Picture and seven other Oscars.
  11. BONUS! Rocky (1976) – Small time boxer gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fight the heavyweight champ and along the way falls in love with his manager’s sister.  Everyone who has seen it knows the line, “Yo, Adrian” – but the most important lines in the movie are the last two;Rocky,”Where’s your hat”?  (Rocky has just won the championship but is mostly concerned with taking care of Adrian),then ” I love you”!, “No, I love you”!

    Sylvester Stallone,Rocky Balboa, Adrianne

    Yo Adrian!
