I love to watch birds hopping on and off my feeder in the backyard.  I also love the sound of their manic early morning chirping as dawn breaks and they descend upon the feeder for breakfast.  Mostly we get Sparrows and Chickadees, Morning Doves, sometimes a pair of Cardinals.  I have a couple of Blue Jays who periodically visit, not to eat from the feeder but rather to steal some of the peanuts left out on the table for the squirrels.  The jays do not have a pleasant voice at all but they are beautiful to look out and bold enough to land on the table or porch rail even though we are present.  Soon, as Spring overcomes winter, there will come a day when all of sudden I hear a lilting song and I know that the Red-Winged Blackbird has arrived!

Over the years we’ve been visited by Grossbeaks, Woodpeckers, Yellow Finches, House Finches, Cowbirds, Starlings, Robins as well as Blackbirds, and of course pigeons (those I chase away).  AND we get Grackles, those iridescent beauties.  They are part of the Starling family and by many, not considered to be an exciting siting.

I disagree! Their luminous feathers literally reflect sunlight, they gleam in the sunshine and as they move around (they are ground feeders) their colors shimmer as their shading goes from blue to purple to green.

Did you know that in Manhattan all the coffee shops serve certain soups on specific days?  I learned this when I moved here and now I know if it’s Thursday, then it must be pea soup day!  So bearing that in mind, I made some Vegetarian Pea Soup this morning. It bears no resemblance to what would come in that thick crockery cup served within a minute of ordering it.  My soup is thick and chunky and it was delicious and the perfect meal on a night like tonight as the temperature dropped into the 20’s.

VEGETARIAN PEA SOUP

3 TBS olive oil

1 medium-size onion, finely chopped (about 1 cup)

1 rib celery, finely chopped

1 medium-size carrot, finely chopped

1 clove of garlic (I use 2) pressed or finely chopped

1 cup dried split peas

6 cups of vegetable broth

1/2 cup orzo or other small pasta shape

Kosher salt

Freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Heat oil in large saucepan over medium high heat.  Add the onion, celery, garlic and carrot. Cook till onion begins to soften, about 2 minutes.  Add the split peas and broth; bring to boil.  Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover and simmer until peas are tender and the soup is thick and smooth.

Raise the heat to medium-high. Stir in pasta  Cook until pasta is tender but firm, al dente, 7-10 minutes longer. Season with salt to taste. Serve with Parmesan cheese.

Figures of Speech

Figures of Speech (Photo credit: Enokson)

If you can pronounce it then you probably don’t need to read further, however, if you want to smile out loud at these figures of speech that twist the meaning of the sentence as a whole. Comedians and satirists use paraprosdokians all the time!  Here are Thursday’s Top Ten plus Two:

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

You’re never too old to learn something stupid.

I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn’t work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

War does not determine who is right – only who is left.

Evening news is where they begin with ‘Good evening’ and then proceed to tell you why it isn’t.

Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars but check when you say the paint is wet.

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!

Hospitality: making your guests feel like they’re at home, even if you wish they were.

When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water.

We’re not vegetarians (yet) but it’s possible we are heading in that direction.  Peter always leaned that way for health reasons and I, in recent years, have become deeply disturbed over the exposes regarding the treatment and slaughtering of animals.  Sometimes if I find myself thinking about it, I can’t finish eating whatever meat was on my place.  I know this sounds weird coming from someone who just extolled the virtues of The Shake Shack.  Well, like I said, I may be headed in that direction but it’s long journey down that road.

However, I do love cooking with fresh vegetables and therefore I often make vegetarian meals.  Tonight we had a delicious dinner;  I made a Butternut Squash Risotto,  Roasted Cauliflower and a Mesclun Salad.  That and a freshly baked baguette from Fairway made quite a meal.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH RISOTTO

3 cups fat-free low-sodium vegetable broth

1 cup butternut squash puree

1TBS butter or olive oil

3 cloves of garlic, chopped

1/4 cups shallots, chopped

1 cup Arborio rice – I used Carnaroll rice

2 oz dry white wine

1TBS chopped fresh sage

1/4 cups freshly grated Parmiagiano-Reggiano

Salt and fresh cracked pepper to taste

2 cups fresh baby arugula, for garnish

In large sauce pan, heat broth and butternut squash puree over medium-high heat.  When it boils, reduce heat to a simmer and maintain over low heat, taste for salt and adjust as needed.

In large heavy sauce pan over medium heat, heat oil or butter until melted.  Add shallots, garlic and rice; saute till rice is well-coated with oil or butter, about 3 minutes.  Add the wine and sage and stir until it is absorbed.

Add a ladleful of the simmering stock; wait until it is absorbed before adding another ladleful stirring gently and almost constantly.  Stirring loosens the starch molecules from the outside of the rice  grains into the surrounding liquid, creating a smooth creamy-textured liquid.

Continue this process until the rice is creamy, tender to the bite, but slightly firm in the center and all the stock is used, about 25 minutes from the time you started.  When all the liquid is absorbed, stir in the grated cheese and remove from heat.

Serve immediately and top with baby arugula and extra grated-cheese if desired.  Makes 3 2/3 cups.

New York City Smells

New York City is a treasure trove of sights, sounds and smells. The sights are impressive, the sounds often jarring and the smells…well, let’s just say, summer in the City is not a rose garden. Intense heat intensifies the random odors.

A walk past a sewer drain or a pile of garbage and trash can be overwhelming. But tonight, climbing up the subway steps, I caught a whiff of something cooking. It smelled like hamburgers grilling – in NYC?? A few more steps and I found myself standing in front of The Shake Shack. Yum, dinner tonight. Thank you Danny Meyer!

The jury is still out on whether or not encouraging belief in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy is a good idea or a very bad idea.  Mmmm

Personally I think instilling fantasy into your chid’s head at an early age, only makes it easier for them later in life when after 20 years with the same person borders on extreme boredom.  Lucky for me, my parents allowed me to believe in everything for as long as I wanted to pretend I still did.  These early-in-life lesson are invaluable when it comes to faking an orgasm, don’t you agree?

I think my first reality was around the Easter bunny.  You know the concept  was just too far-fetched.  I mean, was this rabbit the size of an adult. How did he get from house to house?  He didn’t have a sleigh and he, heck we don’t even know if he was a he or a she and either way, there were no wings!  And why would a rabbit be delivering eggs?  Where did he get them?  I never saw any Easter chickens just Easter chicks.  Well besides all the hard to believe stuff, being Catholic, it was also not so easy to get into the frivolity aspect of Easter.  After all it followed 40 days of somber repentance, deprivation, fasting and lots and lots of church going.  And as if the 40 days of Lent weren’t serious enough, the last 3 were downright psychologically disturbing!

There was Holy Thursday and off we went to some service – Church in the middle of the week! And just when it was getting to be lighter later and all of us kids wanted to play hide and seek after supper.  That was only mildly unpleasant,…what followed was much worse.  Good Friday dawned and you knew this was not going to be a fun day at all. There was no loud laughing or running around and of course no meat at any meal.  Between 12 noon and 3pm, you could hear a pin drop, silence was encouraged.  I went to parochial school so I think we definitely had the day off.  If you hadn’t been to confession by Good Friday, you were surely going that day!  Since I had made my First Communion while in second grade, you can only imagine the terrors that dark little closet-like cubicle held for an 8 year old!  Then it was off to a very long, very somber service.  There were the Stations of the Cross and think about those horror scenes described in detail as heard by a young child!  My daughter doesn’t want Finley to watch Squarepants Sponge Bob or Kung Fu Pandas and my father took me to hear the Stations of the Cross and to witness this gigantic crucifix laying across the altar steps and people went up to kiss the feet or something! YIKES!

One more day before we finally get the candy!!!  Holy Saturday was another quiet day but at least I didn’t have to go to Church.  Instead we were allowed to play quietly on the front steps – I remember playing jacks with my two friends in the afternoon.  Things lightened up a bit by Saturday night;  Grandma and Grandpa arrived and lots of food preparation was underway for Sunday’s big dinner.  After a bath before bed, my clothes were laid out for big dress-up event of the spring – your Easter outfit.

Patent leather shoes, a new dress, a lightweight duster-like coat and of course a hat.  White straw with maybe a navy blue ribbon edging and flowers on top.  My dad always got my mom a corsage and I used to get a wristlet corsage of pink baby roses or pink carnations.  Dressed up and decked out, we went to High Mass and after (and only after) Mass, we went home for breakfast and our Easter baskets.  I have to say one of the most liberal moments in my upbringing was that I was allowed to eat as much candy and eggs in my basket as I wanted to.  Maybe my parents thought the sooner the basket is empty, the sooner the sugar high would subside.

By noon on Easter Sunday, all was right with the world again.  The extended family was in residence, the Easter dinner was delicious, and there was chocolate and  more chocolate and more chocolate.

Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy hung around a lot longer.  Not surprising since there was so much more in it for me than a hollow chocolate bunny and some jelly beans!  I say let the stories live on;  I always pictured the Tooth Fairy to look a lot like Tinkerbell.  Santa Claus surely looked like the Coca Cola image of St. Nicholas as far as I was concerned.

What’s the point in telling your kids the truth?  You will only then have to come across with the latest toy fad or suffer the stigma of being the only parent who was unwilling to go to Walmart at 3am to stand in line to get that………(you fill in the blank since it changes every year).

So here’s the question again, Is the Easter Bunny coming to your house?

The Golden Swath

It was one of those warm and still nights on the ocean. Anchored out in Old Harbor, we could hear the lively music and crowds at the big hotel on the island. We were sitting in the stern sipping coffee and soon the night sky was dotted with stars.

I loved trying to pick out the summer constellations. Being born in May, my favorite was Castor and Pollux. Tonight the sky was cloudless and there were so many stars it was hard to see between them. Just then I saw the golden swath. Was it? Oh wow!  The Milky Way!

When my daughter and her husband moved to Florida at the beginning of this year, I was devastated.  Well actually I still am because I miss my little Finny so much.  I enjoyed having them nearby even though I didn’t see all that much of them, they were still close , and often I would pick Finley up from school or take her there.

My husband and I took her to the Metropolitan Museum and were looking forward to immersing this bright little girl into the culture that’s so readily available in The City. Alas, she’s gone to Florida and is now taking tennis lessons and learning Spanish.  She was just getting to the age where the adventures were about to begin.  Finley is intelligent and curious and very observant so any little outing with her was exciting.

Her parents certainly exposed her to the theater while in NYC and took her to the many child-centered events held in Manhattan.  She went to see Mary Poppins, Annie and shows like Pinkalicious and some show where the performer created monster bubbles.  There were more too. We went to the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show together every year since she was two!  I even made her a hat to wear in the Easter Parade! Her other grandparents took her to the Empire State building and other wonderful sites in the City.

I knew that if we went to the Village she would find it fascinating or Chinatown….so many places, so much to see and now she’s gone.  I’m hoping we can bring her to New York for a week sometime soon and keep the City alive for her and not have it become a distant childhood memory.

And where is all this leading up to?  Well actually I didn’t sit down to write a lament about how much I miss Finley Ray, it sort of just came out on the keys.  Chiara, my daughter, sent me a photo yesterday and it prompted me to want to muse about life after New York City – See for yourself!!!

I NEED Coffee

Of course I know it’s silly, well actually I’m only saying that; I don’t really think it’s silly at all. Every morning I gotta have a Grande Americano!

Wherever I find myself – at home, or in another city or state, finding the nearest Starbucks is first on my list. Like any other addict, I have to make sure I know where my next fix is coming from!

One day last week, I had a cup of java-no Starbucks in sight. Soon my temples were pounding and then I knew my addiction was to Starbucks not caffeine.

Well now, did you win the Oscar pool at your office or party?  I did NOT but I did come in 2nd place and we all know how important second place is!  Yeah, like who came in second for Best Picture?

The evening started off with what I thought was an upset.  Christopher Waltz wins Best Supporting Actor.  His role as the fast-talking dentist cum snake oil salesman was really terrific and he held the screen’s attention whenever he was in the scene.  However, I thought Robert DeNiro  would win because I read all the predictions.  That’s not who I thought should win…in fact, I don’t consider DeNiro’s portrayal of the father in Silver Linings Playbook even among his better roles.  Tommy Lee Jones or Philip Seymour Hoffman would have been my pick.

Best  Actress was also an upset.  Again, I chose the one I considered a favorite, Emmanuelle Riva in Amour.   I saw Silver Linings Playbook  and loved her character.  I did think one of her best scenes was somewhat borrowed  from  Five Easy Pieces.  And again, not really an Oscar-worthy performance.  So how did she capture this prize?  I think the old saying A house divided…..may have had some bearing here – Emmanuelle Riva was a favorite and Quvenzhané Wallis, a young lady who became an actress and a star within the space of a year.  I think these two other entries divided the vote significantly.

No surprises in Best Picture and Best Actor.  Argo  was favored to win by all accounts in the last weeks of the Oscar race.  It was a really good movie but I don’t think it was better than Lincoln and rumor is….Argo was picked because the Academy snubbed Ben Affleck and didn’t nominate him for Best Director. Mmmmm could be! Out of the five nominees for Best Actor there were really 3 strong contenders.  Hugh Jackman and Denzel Washington gave us Academy Award performances.  Joaquin Phoenix was   absolutely fantastic and although he was the lead in the movie, I think he would have been better placed in the Best Supporting Actor category. And no surprise for Best Supporting Actress either – Anne Hathaway sang her heart out and up the red carpet.

As the big night wound down and the big three were about to be announced, hardly anyone expected any upsets at this point in the evening.  Never assume!  When Ang Lee won Best Director, I felt that was a real upset.  Steven Speilberg had been mentioned over and over as favored to win, so was this yet another house divided?  Certainly all the nominees were real contenders;  Benh Zeitlin directed an entire cast of mostly unprofessionals – brilliant! David O. Russell was an emotional favorite due to his son’s condition. Probably the least likely to win was Michael Haneke, not because his direction of Amour  wasn’t spot on, he just hasn’t directed  a lot of movies that were hits in the USA and as I said, the competition in this field was fierce.

My husband and I were guests at our neighbor Alice’s party.  It was a small but lively group and great company.  Heather, her daughter is witty and sardonic and she makes a mean Cosmopoiitan ( I just was’t in the mood for one thinking it might too sweet for me).  Jason and Joanie, both friends of Heather were there as well as Mark, another neighbor.  Jason and I hit it off immediately because the two of us sat there iPad in hands and we tweeted throughout the show giving our own personal insight and opinions on everything from the gowns, Who are you wearing?  to critiquing performances and even hairpieces! We were wicked!  It was no surprise that we had a great time, and  that Alice had enough food to feed an army.  But there was one more upset of the evening – Heather (self-acclaimed favorite) did not win the Oscar pool!  She had such a strong early lead that the rest of us figured the money was going to her for sure.  Mmm NOT  Jason scored the highest score with the most correct answers and hey he was holding the money all evening……. ??!!
