OMG!!!

And this is the other branch I dragged to the side yard

Look What I Found

You may think this is just another rant about this  interminable winter and the unending snow storms leaving compounded snow  accumulation – BUT just read on if you will.  We left Manhattan in the early afternoon cats in tow, streets cleared and clean, the only snow left was on the roof of our car.  When we arrived in Ocean Grove, it was clear that we were now in another climate zone.  OMG! I kind of gasped and screamed because as I looked at the house, I saw that  two enormous branches had fallen into our yard.   Must have been heavy snow and ice BUT we don’t have a tree in our backyard. BUT first things first – we couldn’t really park the car since the plows had created a solid wall of snow against the curb.  I’m wearing sneakers, have a really bad knee and am trying to negotiate stepping through but am actually stepping into (up to my knees) the mound of snow and onto the sidewalk that’s not shoveled and up the steps that were iced and snowed over, and trudged my way to the backyard by way of the not shoveled However, when I mentioned the fact that we had a lot of tree in our yard, he didn’t make any suggestions as to how or who should remove it. walkway. WHY am I heading to the backyard (remember where my husband keeps the snow shovel)? It’s like a routine now with me-I walk through the snow, go into the house and get the dust broom’s shovel and actually use that to remove enough snow so I can get to the shed and retrieve the snow shovel. Here we go again – I have to shovel my way to the front of the house, clear the steps at least to the front porch  BECAUSE the cats are still in the car! Can’t open the car doors anyway until we clear away the snow bank.  Our neighbor, Brian (whose tree it is) came out with a coal shovel and helped us chip away the ice so we can unload the car.

After the cats and all the kaboodle we seem to transport back and forth across the state line were in the house, Peter and I tackled the tree situation.  Two really big branches and all their little branches were entangled like tentacles in the fence, around the squirrel feeder and the bird feeder was dangling from yet another broken branch that had yet to fall. You know a picture is worth a 1000 words – take a look!

Oh wait, I forgot one of best parts of our arrival today – After I shoveled the walk and cleared some of the front porch, I checked the mailbox and found a Notice of Violation and Order to Correct from the town reminding me of the snow removal ordinance and giving me until yesterday to remove the snow.  Well we cleared a very narrow path on the sidewalk  late this afternoon so since  today is the 18th so I hope that was only a warning and hope there won’t be any summons to follow.  Just in case you all want to know we are in violation of Ordinance 13-2 Removal of snow and Ice and 13-2.1 Responsibility for Removal: Time. You’re expected to remove all snow and ice from the sidewalk within 12 daylight hours after the snow fall. MMmmm.

Countdown to Oscar night is underway and wow – TEN??!! This year the Academy in its infinite wisdom or rather a knee jerk reaction to last year’s uproar over the omission of The Dark Knight from the nominee list has nominated TEN that’s right TEN movies in the Best Picture category.  Lest they overlook anybody or any film whether it’s REALLY deserving or not, to be in that vaulted category.   Think about Up in the Air and then think about A Gentleman’s Agreement, In the Heat of the Night and All Quiet on the Western Front.  Compare if you will Blind Side to All About Eve, Rebecca or Midnight Cowboy.  Believe if you will that Up was nominated but ET never was!  A Serious Man or Ghandi or Marty??  An Education in the same class as Gone With the Wind, How Green Was My Valley and On the Waterfront?  Having just watched The Hurt Locker which was extraordinarily realistic and thankfully lacking in major amounts of computer generated special effects and really was intense – it was not quite Mutiny on the Bounty, Lawrence of Arabia or From Here to Eternity.  And then there was The Godfather, Schindler’s List and Casablanca!!!!  For all of our advanced steps in technology which allow a director to have an indigenous people  fly on blue banshees, I think we’re going backwards in the overall caliber and quality of movies today.  Re: the title of this blog – out of the TEN, I’ve seen six and hence………

I just had to laugh, I mean REALLY! My sister-in-law Juanita just called me to tell me how excited she was because she is going to be in the audience of a Glen Beck show.  I had to laugh – as I said, I mean really what can you say when a family member (but NOT blood) actually says to you, ” I love Glen Beck”.  Can you imagine that we were once married to brothers?  I told her to call Tom, my son-in-law. who the last time Tia (as she is known to us) made mention of Glen Beck actually left the room (and it was his house!)

Tia

We love Tia, we really do but think she must be crazy or out of her mind which is probably redundant as she staunchly defends her Republican affiliation.  However, we take enormous satisfaction from the fact that she lives on the Upper West Side, a true hotbed of New York Left Wing Liberals – ta dah!

Tonight’s the night when the Westminster Dog Show will choose the Best in Show.  Word on the street (that would be Seventh Avenue) is that Sadie the Scottish Terrier is a favorite to win BUT is it possible that this year a Golden Retriever, named Treasure,  a long shot could win? Welllllllll the word on the street on the other coast (that would be Hollywood Boulevard) is that Jeff Bridges is going to win the Oscar for Best Actor  – Why? ” Because it’s his time.”  So maybe maybe…..Personally I’m not enamored with Goldens or Labs – I like smaller dogs – like when is a Brussels Griffon going to win? So here we are with the Golden Retriever being the most popular breed in America but can it be a WINNER?  AND for your consideration a Whippet, a Puli, a French Bulldog and a toy Poodle are in the winner’s circles for their own breeds and classes.  It’s a dog’s world!

HI I'm Sadie (well not really)

I look like Treasure at least I think I do.

Delete? Indeed I did!

Here’s what happens when you don’t really know what you’re doing and you do it anyway.  I thought I was saving space by deleting some photos from the media library BUT obviously I managed to delete some of pics from the Blog.  Oh well fans, hang in there with me – when I get back to NYC (where the photos are on the hard drive) I will repost them.  At least I hope that’s why the photos have disappeared into cyberspace.  I’m in Boston and working on a Mac – oh mercy me!  AND I’m going to attempt to upload some photos of Finny I took today when I arrived.

My Funny Valentine

Learning or rather re-learning for the 4th or 5th time to knit (European style)- many many thanks to Susan! A quick sortie onto Facebook and wow – on for 2 minutes and 3 friends found me to chat. I have got to go there more often. Had fun doing arts and crafts – this Grandma/Gigi “made/created” two fantastic Valentine cards. Do you remember how much fun it was to paste doilies, stickers and cut up construction paper – OH YEAH! Almost completely packed to go to Boston and can’t wait to see little Miss Finny. We may even bake Valentine cookies! What’s the best way to get to Boston from New York? Take the Bolt Bus, they are clean, not too big, basically always on time and have electrical outlets for electronic devices. The prices aren’t as good as they used to be – I once made the round trip for $12 and then took a cab from Penn Station home to the UES and the ride cost over $20!!!!! Just hope the impending snow storm is not going to hamper this trip. And along the lines of banal remarks – I made delicious Beef Ministrone in the crock pot today, sooooo gooood.
And now to watch 3 episodes of DVR’d Grey’s Anatomy (I told you I was an addict).

Sunday Sunshine

I do believe that icicle is getting longer and longer

I seem to be fixated on icicles.  Do you think it has anything to do with a Grey’s Anatomy addiction or a Sandra Oh thing?

Snowed in Also!

Then again there’s more than one way to pass the afternoon.  Nick and Nora took this opportunity for a well-deserved cat nap.  So while I was watching the movie, they were  warming themselves next to the radiator. Oh to be a cat for one day in this house!

We were snowed in also.

Snowed in has turned out to be a pleasurable and educational experience for me.  Although physically attached to the keyboard,  I have been watching and listening to an amazing documentary about Dalton Trumbo.  Our friend Paul gave it to Peter and I am embarrassed to admit that I did not know who he was.  It’s because (my lack of awareness) I tended to get lost in the story  and then run to the ladies’ room while the credits were running.  Further, even though I went to numerous Oscar parties,  we never seemed to vote for the screenwriter.  Now however, since I met Peter and he has educated me in  deeper appreciation of movies especially the making of such and the people are involved in that process – well now I read the credits.

As it turns out this documentary was just WONDERFUL and the cast of actors who read and spoke was stellar.  Donald Sutherland, Michael and Kirk Douglas, David Straithemand Liam Niesson  just to name a few.  Their distinctive sonorous voices gave a glorious depth to the writings of Dalton Trumbo.  He wrote the MOST eloquent letters during his lifetime.  To say he had a command of the English language is such a trite understatement and not worthy of use in descriing Trumbo’s talent.  Again I have to say how ridiculous it was of me NOT to know that he wrote the screenplays for Exodus, Pappillion, Spartacus, and The Brave One.  The Brave One won him an Academy Award which he could not pick up!! Which brings me to the REAL essence of this movie.  Dalton Trumbo was blacklisted by that most heinous of American tragedies – The House Un-American Activities Committee.  How the Hollywood Ten suffered and how lives were destroyed and careers abruptly halted is a thing of shame.  A great documentary showing the evils of McCarthyism and the genius of Dalton Trumbo.
