I know I said I was a woman of a certain age but now I guess I’m really going to date myself.  Penny Candy! I remember a couple of small stores where my friends and I would go and buy penny candy.  We’d spend quite a long time deciding just what sweet to buy because you just never knew when you would have another nickel or dime to splurge on candy.  Taking a walk down nostalgia lane (that is the 50’s!) these are some of the toothsome delights I remember best; just like being in Candyland.

Bazooka Bubble gum Soooooooo sweet your teeth hurt with the first chew.   A good choice though, because for a penny, your treat lasted a long, long time – depending on how strong your jaw was as this pinky pink confection turned to a hardened rubbery plastic ball in your mouth.  But wasn’t it fun snapping the gum and blowing enormous bubbles?

Smarties – These neat little cellophane  rolls were great when you just wanted to pop one in your mouth and put it under your tongue.  Best way to eat candy in a classroom!  Multi-colored and not too too sweet, they were great for sharing and lasting.

School Smart Candy

Squirrels – short for Squirrel Nut Chocolate Caramel Chews; Now that’s a mouthful, literally and figuratively.   There were a lot of flavors packed into those small 2 inch rectangles. They came wrapped in semi-opaque waxed paper and what you go was a sticky, gooey, chocolaty, stick-to-your-molars mouthful of taffy-like caramel with nuts too.   Sometimes on Halloween, we’d end up with a bunch of Squirrels, Smarties and Bubble Gum at the bottom of our sacks.  Not everybody gave out big candy bars in my neighborhood.

Atomic Fire Balls – OMG these things were HOT HOT HOT!  So why did we eat them? Remember how your lips stung, your pink turned hot pink and by the time all the hot went away, you almost cracked a tooth trying to bite the now white ball into pieces?  I understand they’re still around burning up the mouths of brave and foolish kids.

Mary JanesYummy molasses bite-size candies with a peanut butter filling.  Now that I think about it , it’s  possible these golden flavorful goodies started me on my peanut butter addiction!  And if you thought Squirrels stuck to your teeth, well Mary Janes practically glued your upper and lower teeth together.  Do you remember trying to talk without drooling when you had a Mary Jane in your mouth?

We’re pretty used to seeing celebrities walking, talking and shopping in New York City; so many live here.  But they also work here and hardly a week goes by when you don’t see a film being shot on location here.   A few weeks ago look who was in town.  I just LOVE Ed Harris.

And let’s not forget Sam Worthington (Avatar) who was also turning quite a few heads (the younger crowd).

After seeing this photo, you might want to think twice about going to a Sleep Lab to get a cure for sleep apnea! My friend, Jim submitted himself to this tortuous event and as he said, “I failed the test”.

Last week I had a special visit from our friend and adopted daughter, Luana.  She arrived with her husband (newly weds) Gustavo and spent a week in NYC.  Timing was perfect because she got to meet Finley too and lucky for Luana – Finny decided to spare one of her band-aids for Luana’s boo-boo!

It’s been a week of preparation, anticipation and participation in a couple of kid’s Halloween parties.  The candy has been plentiful so instead of just one night of binging on  peanut butter cups and snickers, it’s been a continuous sugar fest!

Now we are at the point of no return and some of Chiara’s friends are scrambling for last minute costume ideas.  Well here again are some of the best; a few might you be able to pull together in a day and some just so good, I had to feature them.

A trip to Ricky’s and H&M and maybe you and your friends could be supremely clever.

I’m in Boston and yesterday Finley was invited to attend an annual Halloween party that Chris, one of Chiara’s neighbors holds at his marketing firm.  Knowing Chris, I was sure that it wouldn’t be a table covered with an orange paper tablecloth and bowls of candy corn and orange and black jelly beans – BUT I wasn’t prepared for this….

Halloween Comes Early at Mercury Marketing

Spiderman (professional) met us at the building’s front door and ushered us to the elevator.  When we arrived and the elevator doors opened we walked into a Halloween event, not a party, a happening!

The offices were dim, a weird bubble machine spewed forth white bubbles that when they burst, they seemed powdery.  A screening area was set up with little auditorium chairs and films for the kids ran continuously.  Adjacent to that area was a table set at child height and laden with good goodies for the kids;  there was a popcorn machine, a creature at the doorway with a bucket of candy for your  picking, a bar for the adults with beer, wine and prosecco.  Platters and bowls were all over the room filled with munchies.

Then Cinderella arrived -oooh all of the little princesses were thrilled.  She played music and sang and danced with them.  She painted their faces too.  The party started at 4pm and less we all O D on sugar and alcohol, Chris had an area set up with pizzas and salad and of course cupcakes and even coffee with liquors, omg!

I can’t describe the decorations enough to do them justice and I don’t have any great photos because as usual my camera kept telling me to change the battery (which I did but to no avail).  There were skeletons, cobwebs, pumpkins galore, a few creatures here and there, streamers and crepe paper and all sorts of table decorations, not to mention the plates and flatware. There was even a sort of haunted house room for the little kids with more goodies for them.  There were bags you could fill yourself from the huge bowls of candy on one table and a Mr. Potato Head for each child to take home and by the way it was a Halloween Potato Head! Yes Mr. Potato Head as a ghost.  And more – there were these small stuffed creatures, mini-huggables; Dracula, Frankenstein and the like.

BOO!!

Now why didn’t I think a marketing executive would take this party right over the top??? It was generous, wonderful and fabulous.

Three Screams Are Better Than One

With only 3 days left anticipation is building!  Some people are just too scared to go out trick or treating alone (and that’s not much fun anyway) so they travel in a pack.  Since there only three days before the Big Night,  I thought photos of some gruesome threesomes would be perfect for today!

Tasty Tidbits Tuesday

I admit I didn’t plan my trip to Boston very well, otherwise I would have remembered to bring a recipe with me to share with you all on Tasty Tidbits Tuesday. BUT lucky for me Chiara’s friend Jocelyn came for dinner and brought her friend, Cody.  Turns out Cody was the big hit of the evening. First off, Finley invited her to build blocks with her AND jump on her bubble wrap -an honor in itself.  Then during dinner, I found out that Cody blogged and also followed Where’s George!  I know you must be wondering what Where’s George is all about; it will have to be another blog.  Then Pasha, Chiara’s Siamese cat jumped on her lap and stayed there the whole evening and he is NOT friendly.  Lastly and best of all, I discovered that Cody blogged and her niche is  COOKING! Didn’t that just turn out perfect for me?  I’m happy to present you with a link to her blog:

The Gourmet Analyst

I think you will find her post on Butternut Squash and Apple Soup to be just the meal for this Halloween weekend.  I know when my kids were little I always tried to get something hot, quick and healthy into them BEFORE they went out trick or treating!  Enjoy the soup and check out some of her other recipes too.

FIVE DAYS TILL HALLOWEEN

I’ve been having so much fun with the countdown to Halloween.  Now that we are 5 days away, I thought it would be a good idea to feature some of the BEST Halloween costumes.  These are all very original ideas or excellent executions of known characters.

Whoooo I can feel the vibes of Halloween all around me.  I ‘m in Boston and today, Saturday, there must have been a big Halloween happening at Prudential Mall because we saw lots of little kids dressed up early today and heading that way.  Unfortunately Finley had to go home to take a nap and Francesca needed to be fed.

Anyway as the count down continues so do the photos from previous Greenwich Village Parades.
