A picture is worth a thousand words and in this case the picture is a thousand words or so.  What a great Christmas gift for the gamester in your life.  I play Scrabble every day with some friends online through Facebook.  In my other life, (yes I had one) I used to play Scrabble every day in the summer with my friend Barbara Regan.  Sitting at the pool or in her kitchen, we whiled away hours of word smithing. I’ll bet you know a Scrabble player too.

Here’s a festive idea to not only add some holiday cheer to your dinner table but to also provide place cards.  And if you’re “green”-conscious this will appeal to you.

Cut up old Christmas cards in the shape of a star and then cut out the same star shape in tissue paper.  Write your guest’s name on the tissue paper star, punch a hole in the two cut-outs, thread them with a length of red ribbon and tie up the dinner napkin.

DASHING DEER

It seems as if every year, Christmas and holiday wrapping paper gets more and more sophisticated.  One store in particular is a particular favorite of mine for wrapping paper, The Container Store.  I love how they showcase the papers by grouping them in various color categories and they have tons to pick from.

I like this particular choice of wrapping paper because it is a slightly-off-Christmas color and deer are so ecumenical!  Ha, ha, this from a Catholic wife of a Jewish husband.

Wrap the gift and tie it up with a piece of grosgrain ribbon with a couple of jingle bells on top and you can “jingle all the way” through the holiday!

Hopefully you got your Advent calendars early this year so you were ready to peel open door number one. Oh the anticipation that the traditional Advent Calendar engenders!  This year I purchased at an Advent House for Finley.  An amazing work, possibly home-made, however, extremely well-crafted.  An adorable cottage replete with dormers and all together 25 little door opening up into a tiny space ready to hold some minute treasure.  Unfortunately the space is so tiny, not much could fit in there other than pennies, dimes, stickers, gummy bears and a couple of colorful ponytail holders.  Not too exciting but happily, Finley is staying in bed in the morning as instructed or else, she doesn’t get to open up a door.

So I decided to make an Advent Blog for my readers filled with all kinds of Christmas and holiday related ideas!

I know I’m starting late but I will catch up, promise!

This past Thursday would have been Emily Post‘s 139th birthday!  In honor of the occasion, the website, Mental Floss posted 10 tips and admonitions from that great arbiter of appropriate behavior.  These 10 items are interesting although probably more suitable to life in the mid-1960’s!

      1. On Eating Corn on the Cob: “To attach the corn on the cob with as little ferocity as possible is perhaps the only direction to be given, and the only maxim to bear in mind when eating this pleasant-to-taste but not-very-manageable vegetable is to eat it as neatly as possible.  The real thing to avoid is too much buttering and greedy eating.
      2. On Proper Attire for Dates: ” It’s always better to be under-than over-dressed.  Should your date be dressed for bowling and you are in a cocktail dress, excuse yourself for 10 minutes-no more-and change into something more casual.
      3. On the Behavior of an Engaged Couple:  It’s unnecessary to state that an engaged man show no marked interest in other women.
      4. On Greeting Guests Before A Wedding:  It is proper to smile and bow slightly to people you know, and even to speak briefly and quietly to a friend if they are sitting next to you.  However, if among strangers, you should just sit quietly till the procession starts.
      5. On Refusing to Dance: Refusing to dance with one man and then immediately dancing with another is an open affront to the first one – excusable only if he was intoxicated or so offensive that the affront was justifiable.
      6. On Dressing for an Audience with the PopeThe rules of dress for visitors to the Pope are not so strict as they once were.  But even now for a private or special audience, men usually wear traditional evening dress with tails or sack coat and women long-sleeved black dresses with a veil over their hair.  No one may wear more than the most functional jewelry.
      7. On Women Dining Together:  When several women dine together, the problem of the check is one that can concern to and confusion among the waiters, the nearby diners and the women themselves.  Women are so seldom able to separate the check into several parts with grace and speed that the cartoon of feminine heads clustered around the waiter’s tab, captioned, “Now Ethel, you had the tomato surprise.”, is all familiar to us.
      8. On Refusing Wine: If you do wish wine, it is best because it is the least conspicuous to allow a little wine to be poured into your glass. Unless your host happens to be looking at your glass when the wine is poured, he will not know later on that your almost empty glass was never filled. On the other hand if he does notice, he could not feel that much wine was wasted.
      9. On Eye Makeup:  Heavily made up eyes belong only on the stage or in the chorus line.
      10. On the Similarities Between Being Witty and Opium Addiction:

“In great danger of making enemies is the man or woman of brilliant wit. Sharp wit tends to produce a feeling of mistrust even while it stimulates. Furthermore, the applause that follows every witty sally becomes in time breath to the nostrils, and perfectly well-intentioned people who mean to say nothing unkind in the flash of a second ‘see a point’ and in the next second score it with no more power to resist than a drug addict has to refuse a dose put into his hand.”

I paraphrased some of her 10 Tips in an effort to streamline the post.

Basket of petunias

Petunias in full bloom

                            THURSDAY’S TOP TEN

Summer is waning just like the new moon!  Oh and you can tell; there are signs everywhere! How depressing! I sometimes think I want to live in “An Endless Summer”.

Labor Day weekend is here, the traditional end of the summer vacation and just like robins are the harbingers of Spring, there are many signs summer is ending!

  1. My petunias are getting really straggly and have much fewer blooms.
  2. The newspaper inserts are full of BACK TO SCHOOL  sales.
  3. I needed a shawl the other night when walking on the boardwalk.
  4. The air conditioners haven’t been on for the last two weeks.
  5. All the stores have Halloween costumes and candy on display.
  6. The older teenagers in town have disappeared – gone off to college.
  7. The hydrangeas have faded and the lariope grass is in full bloom with its purple flowers.
  8. The Swimsuit Station is having a 50% markdown sale.
  9. Neighbors have started putting mums on their porches.
  10. Home Depot has snow blowers and leaf blowers out in front.

So what have you noticed that tells you one season is ending and another is beginning.  Would love to post them next year.

Yesterday Finley Ray arrived for the weekend and in less than 24 hours we already had a few adventures.  We went to a book fair and she was in her element for sure.  She just plopped down on the concrete floor and went through several books discarding those she decided were not worth taking home and choosing very carefully the keepers.   The Ladies auxiliary had set up a hot dog concession and the wafting odor of hot dogs was too irresistable for her, so one hot dog with ketchup was ordered.  Then it was off to the boardwalk where we didn’t go to the beach per se because rain was imminent but still we had time to take off our shoes and walk in the sand.

Picking Papa Pete up at the train station was going to be a treat in hopes that we would see the “big” train.  Alas he arrived before we did.  Still we had another stop, this time to the Laurie’s Vegetable & Fruit stand in Neptune.   Laurie  is so friendly and warm and since it had begun to rain and we were the only customers at the time, she invited Finley up onto the counter to have some fresh blueberries.  The fruit stand was originally a gas station in the 1930’s and there were still some remnants of its origins and don’t you know, little Miss Finny announced that this was a garage!  Yes,I have a genius granddaughter.  The rain was dripping heavily from the garage doors that were opened and Fin realized as every little child does that running back and forth in the rain can be so much fun.  First of all you get big drop marks on your clothes and your hair gets wet, water runs down your cheeks and soon you have water squishing between your toes in your sandals (hers were jelly thank goodness).

Dinner on a TV tray is fun too especially if you are getting to watch a movie at the same time!  I think Finley had her first corn on the cob Friday night because she didn’t seem too familiar with the concept.

It was a no-nap day due some unforseen circumstances and the fact that Finley and I hit the road shortly after she arrived.  So by dinner time I could tell she was fading but she refused to cave in until after her two movies had been seen.  First a bath in Gigi’s blue drink bucket ( a cottage without a bathtub can be a real drawback when you have kids around), then the movies and we are off to bed.  A promise made to read two books seemed unlikely as I was pretty sure she wouldn’t insist.  Sure enough she was just about asleep by the time I finished one of the new books we had bought at the Book Sale.

She turned her head, closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep.  So deep and so fast that I ran downstairs to get my camera to capture this photo.  Take heed Mommy, I used a flash! Well of  course it was PAST her regular bed time, lol. lol.

And then there were TWO!

Not to be left out, while I was snapping this shot, another member of the family joined in to make it a menagerie a trois!

And Then There Were Three!

Saturday morning , errr, rather early in  the morning, Finley was thoughtful enough to get out of bed and go downstairs and bring up two videos that she thought we all should watch together in bed.  So of course we did.

She was very busy around the house that morning, actually helping me clean.  She insisted on having a paper towel spritzed with Simple Green so she could wipe down tables, cabinets and anything else I pointed at.

We plopped her in the stroller and took off to the Book Fair again, this time so Peter could peruse the aisles in search of literary treasures.  Finley made off with 2 more books and surprise, surprise, one of them is Cinderella.  It was so bloody hot and I was hoping to get over to the North End beach to see the sand sculptures.  By the time we walked east to the boardwalk, and then to North Beach, I was already over it as far as viewing any sand castles.  Just as we approached the staircase to the beach, Finny announced that she had to pee.  Just GREAT-no bathrooms at this end of the boardwalk, the restaurant located there is closed and so I had to walk all the way back to the Pavillion and talk my way past the ticket taker to get her onto the beach where there were some bathrooms.  NOT pleasant restrooms at all,  and we had to cut the line as she was jumping up and down literally so who would make a little girl wait? Truth be told I don’t think I have ever been on a public beach with decent bathrooms. Sorry to say that the sculptures weren’t worth the hike, the sun and the hot sand 😦

We headed home by way of Day’s Ice Cream because having ice cream in the middle of the day is just the perfect pick-me-up on a blistering summer afternoon.  The girls in the ice cream shop tried to convince Finley that she wanted strawberry because it was pink or party cake and after she tasted each and turned up her nose, she ordered just exactly what she told me she wanted;  soft vanilla with sprinkles on top!

Ice Cream Makes Me Smile Too

Finally we made it to the beach.

At first she didn’t even want to get her feet wet and she raced back to the sand each time a wave lapped anywhere near where she was standing.  Peter finally got her into the water by splashing her and letting her splash him which brought forth shrieks and uncontrollable giggles.  Soon she was sitting down and letting the waves foam up around her knees.  And before long, she was in the water being held, swung and dipped while wave after wave crashed into her each one eliciting one of Finley’s ear-piercing shrieks and I just know how much the people who were in sand chairs down at the water reading, really and truly loved that sound!

I wish I dared to get in the waves with the camera so I could have taken a photograph of her loving having the waves crash on her.  Finally, it was strongly suggested that she might want to make a sand castle…

After a bath to remove sand from places one would never expect sand to land, Fin was ready for bed.  Again,it was a one book night because this little water baby was very tired.

Sunday was tea party day for Finley Ray.  I was helping my friend, Jane who runs a Tea Room and so about lunch time, Peter brought Finny over to the Tea Room so she too could attend a Teddy Bear Tea as they are known when kids come to High Tea.

Believe it or not she ate EVERYTHING!  It was a blistering hot day so off to the beach we went and this time there was no hesitation.  Finley was shrieking through the waves as soon as she hit the shore line.  This time she was so sandy that only a shower would do to get her clean.

I always maintain that La Vie en Rose is in work in progress but perhaps this confection of a cottage is almost done since we both swear we certainly can’t add or put another thing into the house.   Murray was here on Sunday, he opted to come even though the weather was bad and he hadn’t seen Stacey and Matt who had arrived on Saturday, in a long time.

Murray took some great little snippet photos of what I refer to as Life in Pink;

The front porch is pinker than ever! My friend Jane, who owns the Lilligaard Hotel has been doing some redecorating and I’ve been the lucky recipient of some cast-offs!  The new pink wooden rocker  as well as some beautiful pink and turquoise floral cushions have definitely enhanced the front porch.

Finally my birthday present to myself bike was put together by my brother-in-law, Matt.

Squirrels are the official mascots at La Vie en Rose.  Peter feeds them all year round.  On the rare occasion when a live squirrel isn’t on the porch looking for a hand-out, we always have our ornamental friend.

All the floral beauty isn’t just in the front of the cottage.  This year I put a huge planter of pink and white petunias in a white wicker planter next to the shed.

By the way, squirrels aren’t the only wildlife that get fed on a regular basis.  The birds have feeders in the backyard a couple of Blue Jays show up from time to time for a peanut treat also.  Bold and brazen, they are not fazed by humans, at least not when there’s a peanut in sight.

Well those of you who know me (and my husband) and recently a good friend described us to her friend as “they’re so retro”, know that almost all things old and vintage are revered and quite possibly collected by us.  I sometimes refer to my apartment as a tchotcha museum, while others have referred to it as the archives.  So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that of course we love vintage classic cars!  Really, who doesn’t?

The cars from the 1930’s. 40’s and 50’s are Classic;  Clearly they don’t make them like they used to.  First of all, those cars were made with steel, not fiberglass so to get a dent on your bumper someone would really have to smack you and with their weight they didn’t sway on the highway.  Besides the fact that every make and model looked different so that when one was coming your way you knew whether it was a Ford or DeSoto or a Chevy or a Lincoln, for me I loved the mascots (hood ornaments to those of you who….).  I have several mascots from vintage cars and have them mounted and on display in my Art Deco living room.  They were in fact beautiful pieces of chrome sculpture!  But I digress.  So what about the cars – we often go to Vintage Car Shows in the tri-state area and I take photos when I remember to bring the camera and the extra battery (lol).

My old and dear friend, Susan sent me this charming little story about Grandma’s aprons.  Of course it took me back to a time when I remember my own Grandma, standing in the kitchen in her “Cobbler‘s Apron”, because that’s the kind she preferred and she used to make them herself.  I remember my own mother wearing the more traditional short, tie-it-around-your-waist version and having many;  Some were the kind she put on just before the company came, crisp, clean and often frilly.

Hostess Aprons

When I was a young wife, I asked my Grandmother to make me some Cobbler Aprons and she gave me two.  I still have one (which unfortunately I can no longer fit in) and one I gave to my daughter.  I think she still has it, I hope she does.

Today’s aprons are very different and are more associated with grilling than cooking although lately I’ve taken to wearing one more often than not when I cook.  I mean how many times do I have to send a tee shirt or blouse to the cleaners before I learn that it’s quite possible that I will a) spill something on myself, b) splash something on myself or c) the oil will spatter on me!!  Well I have about 4 of these pseudo-chef aprons; a black one with various pasta shapes and their names on the front, a white one with a big blue whale courtesy of a Westchester real estate company, and two favorites; one with penguins on the front and lined in pink – just perfect for me and my husband’s niece, Dani made it.  The other favorite is a black apron with the just these words so near and dear to my heart – something like “All I ask is that you treat me with the same respect as Martha”. – Love it!  But enough about me, here’s the lovely little story which if you’re old enough will take you back to another  simpler time.

What a sweet memory!

Cobbler's Apron

Remember making aprons in Home Ec class?

I don’t think our kids know what an apron is and they certainly don’t have Home Ec classes.  The principal use of  Grandma’s apron was to protect the  dress underneath because she only had a few and it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material.  But along with that….

It served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children’s tears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs and fussy chicks.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow bent over the stove.

Chips and kindling were brought into the kitchen in that apron for the wood stove or fireplace.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in the apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up, it’s surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

It was a super place to hide a marble, a piece of candy or almost anything in Nana’s pocket.

Grandma' s Apron

When it was time for dinner, Grandma would go out to the porch, wave her apron and the menfolk would know it was time to come in from the fields for dinner. (This is more Hollywood than any memory I would have).

It will be a long time before anyone invents anything as useful as Grandma’s apron.
