If I had the money, time, where-with-all, materials or money to buy one of these FABULOUS hats, you would have seen me on The Avenue yesterday parading like a peacock.  These fantastic creations are by Dee’s in Kentucky where these hats are created for the Kentucky Derby.  I realized as I was scrolling through the gallery of photos of one more terrific creation after another, how much I would love to go to her store and take one of the classes on making a real Derby hat.  Maybe I just will do that next year!!!

What an absolutely glorious day for an Easter Parade! Not too hot, not too cold, not windy, just sunny and warm.  The weather brought out thousands of parade walkers and watchers.

The Easter Parade is unlike any other parade in New York City.  There are no restrictions, guidelines, leaders or such.  It’s day to parade down Fifth Avenue (well for about 8 blocks) wearing your going-to-church finery, your Easter bonnet.  Actually that was the original concept way back when, now there are aspects of it that are circus-like but what do you expect, it IS New York.

Well off to the Parade we went about noon, Peter, my son, Joel and myself.  We were dressed up and if I do say so myself, my hat looked great.  We had our picture taken, and taken and taken.  This really cracked Joel up; He’s a photographer so when person after person asked us if we would pose for a photo, he started taking pictures of people taking our photo!

I didn’t take as many pictures as usual because for some reason, I kept getting my camera tangled up with my pocketbook and the whole situation was awkward.   I have a couple to post and hope to have some of Joel’s photos to post tomorrow.

Passover plate with symbolic foods: maror, egg...

Passover plate with symbolic foods: maror, egg, haroset, karpas, zro'ah, dish of salt water

I haven’t taken the time to calculate how often the Jewish holiday of Passover coincides with Easter, but of course it does happen now and again.  That makes this weekend VERY HOLY and VERY  SPECIAL!

It started on Thursday for the Christians with Holy or Maundy Thursday services.  I remember them well.  This was the terrible night in the Garden of Gethsemane when, while Jesus prayed, Judas dropped the dime on him or in his case, 30 pieces of silver.  Now the term 30 pieces of silver has come to denote ultimate betrayal.  Once the deed was done, and Judas was remorseful he hung himself which only would have compounded his sins in the eyes of the Church.  But then again, there was no Church at that time!.

Next came Good Friday which ironically is one of the most somber days of religious observation for the Christians and an evening of joyous celebratory feasting for the Jews.  Although also threaded with somewhat somber overtones as the story of the Jews plight from Egypt is read at the evening’s Seder, it is also a time for families to gather together to share in this traditional meal replete with special and significant dishes.  While Jewish families are feasting on brisket, gifelte fish and matzoh ball soup, Christians are fasting between meals and eating only seafood as is their tradition on Good Friday.  Why do they call it GOOD?  I haven’t done any research prior to writing this blog and I’m ashamed to admit that 6 years in St. John’s Parochial School didn’t leave me with the answer, but if you know it, please share with us all.  My only guess is that according to my Catholic beliefs, it is characterized as good because that’s the day Jesus saved us all by sacrificing himself for our original sins – well that’s the way the story goes anyway.  Also, the word good is derived from the word pious which means holy, so perhaps we should refer to it as Holy Friday.  We always went to a long and arduous service on Good Friday;  There was the Stations of the Cross,  a long sermon and most of all I remember that at one point, the priest would call out things we would implore God to grant or guide us by responding with “Lord, Pray for us” or “Lord Hear Our Prayer”. One of my favorite memories, as I like to tell my Jewish husband,  is kneeling in church and the priest intoning something about the Jews of the world and our collective response “Lord, Hear our prayer” .

Today is Holy Saturday and as a kid, I remember it as thank God, we don’t have to go to church today, we can eat what we want and tomorrow although a going-to-Mass day would still be a celebration.  My girlfriends were allowed to gather but it was supposed to be a day of quiet play and I remember so clearly, sitting on my front steps playing ball and jacks with my two best friends.

This year Saturday is also the second night of Passover and we are on our way to Brooklyn to join in a non-religious Seder meal at my sister-in-law’s.   They will read from a Haggadah, however it will be devoid of any reference to God.  Mmmm unusual…but befitting of their own atheistic beliefs.

Tomorrow is Easter, the hat is ready, the outfit sort of picked out.  Photos to follow.

A Zissen Pesach and Happy Easter to all.

YUP, it’s DONE!

Of course I had to go “balls to the wall” while “under the gun”.  And now to explore the origins of these motivational expressions!

Balls to the Wall

It probably doesn’t mean what you think, or do you?  Well it does mean, as in my case, to go all out, full throttle as fast as you can.  And full throttle is the key to the meaning and origin of this phrase.  It’s a military aviation term;  Many planes have a ball-top grip on the control sticks.  The throttle, the mechanism to accelerate the engines, is pushed all the way forward towards the firewall which prevents an engine fire from entering the rest of the plane.  The joystick, which if pushed forward to the firewall sends the plane into a dive, so literally putting the balls to the wall would send the plane into a maximum speed dive and figuratively going balls to the wall is doing something all-out with maximum effort.

Under the Gun

This one’s so simple, I’m sure you already know it or will figure it out in a second.  Want to get someone to do something real quick – point the gun at them!  And as in my case, you can do it to yourself although that does sound rather suicidal.

I managed to get the hat done before dinner, scrape the hot glue off my fingertips, pack up the ribbons, sweep away the scraps of leaves and wire clippings.  The end result is slightly different from I had planned – not sure how I forgot about the “mirror” effect.  I had done the whole hat before I realized my error!  However, I figured a flower here, a ribbon there, a bit more crinoline and probably  I could make it work.  I think I did, do you?

I’ve been Missing In Action for more days than I realized-I was shocked to see the date of my last post.  So what has been going on? I can’t say it’s any one thing that has kept me away from the keyboard, just sometimes life takes over.

There’s been much turmoil in my house lately.  Health issues (not mine) played a major role in keeping me otherwise occupied.   I’ve had some work commitments out-of-state, there was a death in the family, and it seems when the season changes, there’s never enough time to do what needs to be done.  Just life taking over as I said.

I had a couple of ideas about writing a blog and somehow could not sit down and write them.  One was about being superstitious and that idea is still floating around in my head.  Oh and the political circus of Republican primaries certainly is bloggy fodder.  I’m going to attempt to create my an Easter bonnet for the Easter Parade on Sunday – maybe I’ll get some photos.

There’s more of course,  but a promise made to my husband not to  write a lot about our private lives or more specifically his, is the reason this blog is so weird tonight!  I’m not trying to tease you dear readers, I just can’t go into “the gory details”.  I hope this period of emotional stressis over because as is my most neurotic habit, I have been eating and eating and eating and eating again.  So now, I have to get my head on straight about seriously dieting – oh yuck!

NO word from me for the last six days! What’s going on? Lots and nothing which all adds up to some random ramblings from the insane asylum of my mind:

Let me first go on record about my ridiculous computer – this laptop should be in the trash!  I am slowly being driven crazy by the constant Error Script messages, the slow as molasses reaction time and the worst of  all, is  the incessant freezing up.  It must have a virus because it’s making me sick.

So I have been avoiding trying to do much of anything on it.  Spent some time on Consumer Reports looking at their recommendations for purchasing  a new computer  – none of which I can afford right now!

Francesca has strep throat and the poor baby only wants to be comforted by her Mommy.  Why should she be different than all of the rest of us?  Chiara has been running to the doctor’s, dealing with Finley and the Nanny had to go home early yesterday.  I’ll be back in the City on Sunday and will help out with the girls

The sun suffered from a couple of storms and the activity caused some unbelievable displays of the Northern Lights.  I looked at the photos and I’m at the point where it makes me sad to do so.  I REALLY REALLY want to see the Aurora in person.  Every time I look into how to go, when to go, it always amounts to more money than I can manage.  I’m getting old, soon to be an official senior and I WANT to see the Aurora Borealis!

I’ve been trying to stock-up the larder at the tea room because I can’t stand all the shopping that is necessary for the menu.  I hope to deal with that issue in a month or two.

We were invited to our friend, Michele’s house this evening to have drinks and homemade foccacia and it was SO GOOD.  It was lovely visiting with Michele and Peter and their home is delightfully comfortable.  Should I mention that I had to drive home?  I’ll bet you can figure out why – I hope he has a brutal hangover tomorrow.

It’s been a busy week of restoration around here.  Peter retrieved some valuable pieces he had in storage and has been stripping, cleaning, varnishing, inspecting, and refurbishing the items for resale.  He’s been doing a bang-up job and I am upset with myself for forgetting to take the Before photo before he started the refinishing of a certain fireplace mantle.  It looks terrific!

Oh, I made scones this week; first time I ever made them all by myself.  I made 41 and thought I would have enough to get through the month…but NO, so today I made 14 more and once again after consulting the calendar, I’m still short…but I’m getting better at whipping them up.

This is so boring, I should at least end it now!  Ok dear readers good night!

Mom to the rescue

SIX WORD MEMOIR MONDAY

Yesterday was the official pay back day – the day we Moms get recognized for years and years of picking up, wiping up, cleaning up your toys,  planning meals, shopping for meals, driving kids to whatever, going to PTA meetings, helping with homework, cleaning the house, taking the dry cleaning in, doing the laundry,  standing on the sidelines cheering our kids on in their chosen sport, making birthday parties special, putting the new roll of toilet paper in the bathroom, taking temperatures, wiping noses, bringing tea and toast to the sick ones in bed, walking the floor in the middle of the night with the crying baby, changing our clothes 3 times a day because of spit up on our shoulders, buying the Easter candy and hiding the baskets, putting band-aids and kisses on knees and elbows, bathing and washing more than one person and not yourself, cooking dinners, making lunches, buying the sugared cereal once in a while, baking cookies and cupcakes for school parties, sitting by the pool while you have your swim lessons, taking you to the playground, filling your Christmas stocking, sending you birthday cards even though you’re in your 30’s, helping to plan a wedding, buying a wedding gown, helping you write the entrance essays for college, making French toast or pancakes for your sleep-over guests, car-pooling you and your friends to nursery school,  teaching you how to knit, sew, garden or cook, insisting you make your bed so you learn some sense of responsibility, taking you for your first real haircut, waiting for hours to use the phone while you chatter away to your friends (pre-cell phone days), reading books to you, singing lullabies when you couldn’t or wouldn’t sleep, taking you for your check-ups and consoling you with a Happy Meal when you got a shot, driving 15 miles to a special store because you only liked to wear certain corduroy pants,  wiping away your tears when you had a fight with a friend or worse – a break-up, giving you as much advice about love and life as you would listen to, making sure you were safe by calling even when you didn’t want me to, teaching you how to tie your shoes, cleaning up the vomit and accidents from your pet, buying a prom dress, telling you from the day you were born how pretty or handsome you really are and loving you till the day I die.

Now having said all that, I hope all you mothers reading this got at least a card, maybe a gift or a dinner or brunch – BECAUSE we deserve it, don’t you think?

And these THREE, only THREE  Six Word Memoirs were sent this past week, oh woe is Mom!

Mom’s – the do all, end all – Susan Celtic Lady

My wonderful mother was Auntie Mame – Gail

A mother, someone I never wanted to be – Anonymous

My mother myself, good or bad – Me

My mom is gone, not forgotten – Me

Well my theme idea didn’t fly this past week but I’m going to try again and this time in sight of the recent major political event – the assassination of Osama Bin Laden; maybe we can sum up our feelings about this in Six Words, no more, no less. Could be you’re ecstatic, disappointed, relieved, glad, sad, angry, upset or whatever…try to express it in just 6 words.

Yesterday in spite of dire predictions of showers, Fifth Avenue was crowded with New Yorkers and tourists.  The annual Easter Parade has been a New York tradition since the 1870’s.  Over the years, it has attracted the colorful, the crazy, the fashionable and the NOT so fashion-minded.

Peter and I and our friends, Helen and Catherine joined us in strolling down the Avenue.  Helen was wearing a very saucy hat from the 1940’s or 30’s (I should have asked her for clarification).  Anyway, she looked lovely and maybe she’ll be in the Times next week.  She had one of her employees join her who was decked out in an unbelievable knock your socks off vintage outfit.  Jessica was a vision of the past in a deep wine red dress, sable fur draped over her arm, wearing net gloves and classic heels from that era.  Topped off with a perky fur hat tilted to the side , she turned everyone’s head – check out the Times, I bet she’s there.

I’ve never gone for the vintage  look when it comes to the Parade but that’s mainly because I maintain I can’t find vintage clothing in my size.  Well even so, I like to wear wide brimmed hats and I like to decorate them with lots of flowers and ribbons.  I have made a few and recycled them and sometimes reconstructed them so when Catherine decided to join us, I offered her a hat.  She picked a favorite of mine, pink with a very wide brim.  She wore a beautiful sun dress and the hat complemented it perfectly.  Peter was dapper  as usual in a soft gray double-breasted suit, vintage tie and a straw “boater”.

We had a great time, strolling along the Avenue and having our photo taken many times.  And as the day wound down, we decided to top off the afternoon enjoying a cocktail.  Now where to go?  Elegant was the byword of the day so we headed to the King Cole bar in the St. Regis Hotel.  It was definitely the right choice.  Turns out many of the people whose outfits we admired apparently had the same idea.  The King Cole bar was only the more elegant with everyone’s Easter finery.

I managed to forget my camera at home (that was a first).  So I’m dependent on others to send me photos from the Parade. So far I only got one I can use but am hoping for more.  I’d like to show Finley Ray in her bright orange and hot pink sun dress and wearing the wreath of flowers Gigi made for her.

Colum McCann at the International Forum on the...

Colum McCann

It’s Monday and therefore we have to really THINK about expressing ourselves, our lives, and whatever else in the way of theme I throw at you!  Last week I suggested that we use the holidays that were upon us as possible inspiration to summing up life in six words, no more, no less and this is what we’ve come up with:

Contemplating where we go from here – Susan Celtic Lady

Friends, fabulous Seder dinner, free haircut – Heide

Yellow peeps, purple chickens don’t exist – Spinny Liberal

Let’s be happy while we’re here. – Heather

Easter: Jesus and Peeps-Resurrect fertility – Spinny Liberal

Easter Parade: A mile of smiles – Me

Easter Sunday-Eggsactly what I expected! – Me

Well that was fun!  And while I’m thinking of a theme for next week, I want to share with you some more of the wonderful Six Word Memoirs from the book,   Not Quite What I  Was Planning-Six Word Memoirs by writers Famous & Obscure.

Study mathematics. Marry slut. Sum bad. – Don Robinson

Took scenic route, got in late – Will Blythe

Raised Jehovah’s Witness. Excommunicated at 22 – Kyria Abrahams

I like big butts, can’t lie – Dave Buss

I’m enjoying even this downward dance – Colum McCann

Without ideas, intelligence could not exist – Ornette Coleman

How about after we have all gorged on matzoh brie, brisket, ham, hot cross buns, and chocolate bunnies and surely DIET is a word being bandied about in many  a household – that we make next week’s theme about food or denial thereof.  If you’re blessed with a great metabolism and the personal conviction to work out to stay in shape or you love food, love to cook, love to eat or kvell when dieting- give it to us in SIX WORDS!  Maybe it’s a taste from your childhood, maybe it’s a gourmet meal in a top chef’s restaurant, maybe it’s just the smell of bread or cookies baking.  Whatever it is, please send it in Six Words, No More, No Less.
