This is a two for the price of one blog post! MAY DAY, MAY DAY is an international term used to seek aid or help. You’ve heard it in the movies, on television and hopefully not ever on a ship, boat or plane on which you were traveling. The origin of this universal plea for help is derived from the French term, “m’aider“ – translation, “help me”.
HELP ME! And that’s my segue to the other May Day. May or May Day is traditionally known as International Worker’s Day. In New York City, Union Square has a long history of being the meeting place to gather to express concern, protest, rally and demonstrate. Today OWS or Occupy Wall Street plans to begin their march/demonstration from Union Square.

This past weekend the weather was about as glorious as you can get. Not too hot, not too cool, not too windy – JUST PERFECT! Everybody was out and about on Saturday including Pbenjay’s staff photographer, Murray Head. I, on the other hand, was still switching my winter clothes with my summer cl0thes and ironing and ironing and ironing. Luckily for you, dear readers, while I was ironing, Murray was moving around the City and snapping some great scenes.

Two nights ago the Empire State Building was lit totally in green to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America! Some things you just never forget and I always remember that Girl Scout saying about silver and gold friends.
Tonight I had dinner with a Gold friend, Janet. We worked together when we both lived in Connecticut and we played together when we were both divorced moms with young pre-teen girls! Tonight was a night of reliving fond memories, catching up on spouses, kids and grandkids. There’s song that New Found Glory recorded; Right Where We Left Off and dinner tonight with my old friend was just like that!
This blog is a virtual hug for you, Janet and also a big Thank You to Murray, Pbenjay’s staff photographer. Now what does one have to do with other? Tonight Janet asked me, “Who is Murray?” After I explained our relationship grown out of a life-long friendship between Murray and my husband, Janet exclaimed and extolled the merits of Murray’s photos! Well you don’t have to convince me, that’s for sure. She mentioned that through his beautiful, artistic, striking and personal photos of New York City, she feels like she lives here (which is about 3,000 miles away from where she resides).
So this one’s for you Janet through the lens of Murray’s camera.

Talk about influence!! New York City will now have TWO red caps in the Vatican. The news was announced last week when Pope Benedict XVI selected Archbishop Timothy Dolan to be elected to the College of Cardinals. For New York to have two Cardinals in the Vatican at the same time is quite rare.

However, it has come to my attention through the watchful eye of Murray Head that there is in fact another regal Cardinal who resides in New York City. He found his Eminence in Central Park.

FAB FOTO FRIDAY
On any given day in The City you will see BLACK being worn everywhere. Every New Yorker has a closet full of black clothes and for all seasons. New Year‘s Day, which was a glorious sunny Sunday this year, was no exception…or was it??

Central Park is New York City’s largest and best playground! Adults have as much fun here as kids do and certainly tourists. On any given day (but especially on weekends) you can watch jugglers, mimes, break dancers, listen to music, play tennis, roller blade, bird watch, dog walk, jog, bike, eat, read in a quiet glade, explore a castle, visit an old dairy, meander through Strawberry Fields, sail a toy boat, ice skate in the winter – need I say more?
A mild and sunny Sunday in January brought out hundreds of visitors to the park. Some came to watch and some came to…….

Who knows, and quite frankly, who cares? Certainly not I!!! I’m not interested in why fors or whatevers – I think my personal fascination comes from a deep appreciation of all wildlife, flora and fauna.
There have been numerous articles about New Yorkers and the life and well-being of Pale Male and his former mate, Lola. We all have heard the story of the building’s maintenance crew destroying the nest of the two Red Tail hawks, invoking the wrath and retribution of thousands led in a crusade by Mary Tyler Moore! Rallies were held, committees were formed, newspaper articles written, and all the usual Big Apple hoo-ha you can imagine. FINALLY the nest was re-installed but it was not quite right; rumor has it that a spike from the pole it sat on was poking through, ugh, but who really knows. The upshot of that was several years of failed mating- no eggs or at least no survivors, a shame. A universal or at least City-wide mantle of guilt and shame lay on the shoulders of the citizens. Man had interfered with nature and now look what we did!
But that was then, and this is now. Lola is gone! She disappeared from the nest; old age? death? illness? Whatever, she was gone. Pale Male still the stud hawk he has always been found himself a new young mate (the trophy wife) and this season they produced two eggs that were studiously watched over by both parents and onlookers, not to mention the obsessive bird-cam addicts online. And lo and behold, two fine young Red Tail hawks were born and are now growing youngsters.
Here’s a peek at these two fine young Red Tail Hawks. If they have been named, I’m unaware as of yet. There’s a striking resemblance to their parents, one looking like Ginger and one in the image of Pale Male; however, for all I know they’re both males or both females – time will tell.
