SSSsssss, well it may be a stretch but I just thought that the S sound was a twisty title for this blog post. And how apropos since there seems to be snow in the forecast every couple of days.  Either it’s impending or we’re told about storms forming in the Gulf or Canada or wherever but they all seem determined to touch down on the East Coast.  If New York City isn’t getting sleet or snow, then surely our little cottage on the Jersey Shore is getting slammed with several inches of snow!

But kids everywhere even big ones, will be kids, and kids and snow go together like rum and coca cola – I know – that’s a weird analogy considering rum and coca cola is usually a summer cocktail.

Sundays in the Park with Murray could be a whole photo series unto itself…but for today I selected a few that make up a Fourth of July celebration in the middle of January.  Central Park, as you know, is a photographer’s canvas for all seasons.  Well if you read this blog, of course you know because I publish Murray’s photos depicting Central Park and its flora and fauna all through the year.  Our most recent snow fall provided a great backdrop and an integral component of this RED WHITE and BLUE  series.

Late again! There are reasons… really!!! Some issues at work are distracting me and keeping me pre-occupied and my husband is ill with a horrific attack of the much-dreaded shingles. God, what a nasty condition that is and he is so much pain.  And another family member underwent serious surgery this past week, and my daughter and family moved into their New York apartment which meant I got to babysit Finley Ray for two-day and two nights which are better known as Movie Night for Finley.  I saw Toy Story and I think this is the 8th showing of Cinderella.  I just love those mice!

Nick and Nora

JUST in case you didn’t already know, I have two cats whose names are Nick and Nora. They are brother and sister and are rescue cats.  We spent a lot of time coming up with a set of names, not too cutsie, not too highbrow (I mean they’re not Persians or Siamese) and eventually Peter and I knew exactly what they should be named.  They are named after Nick and Nora Charles , the martini-drinking couple from the movie series The Thin Man.

The simple joys of community, kids eagerly awaiting Santa Claus‘s arrival, free hot cider and ginger snaps, a crisp cold night and lots of fire trucks lined up on Main Avenue – that’s what was happening in Ocean Grove tonight.  Peter and I joined our friends, Trish and Ron at the Fireman’s Park early in the evening.  The volunteer Fire Department of our little town sponsors this annual event.

Santa’s sleigh was in the park  awaiting his arrival by fire truck!  That was a sight and a sound!  At least 6 fire trucks and an Emergency vehicle came wheeling down Main Avenue with sirens wailing and lights flashing.  The kids screamed and jumped up and down because Santa Claus was coming.  By the way, Trish did too!!!

We sipped piping hot cider and munched on ginger snaps and watched the long line of kids wend their way to Santa.  Once on his lap, you could see  joy on the faces of  the little ones – the believers!

With Christmas around the corner, 15 days and counting, red is popping up everywhere.  Well actually if you’re looking for it, it really is everywhere or in our case, where you find it. So in this season of RED (and green) I thought it a good idea to continue the series of I See Red and Red Is Where You Find It.

Don’t you wish you had a powerful lens like the one used to take these photos?  All you need is a bright sunny almost-Winter day in Central Park, the lens and of course the eye for spotting these little feathered creatures and the patience to capture their beauty.  I often  refer to the beauty of our world by saying Mother Nature, however, I’m really thinking that only God could create this beauty.  Today we are going to get some close-up photos of these wondrous feathered beings, and maybe a squirrel thrown in for good measure.

I thought these photos were great – the beauty of nature and the artistry of the camera captured a “Mother Nature Moment” in Central Park.  These photographs were taken near Bethesda Fountain.

We’re pretty used to seeing celebrities walking, talking and shopping in New York City; so many live here.  But they also work here and hardly a week goes by when you don’t see a film being shot on location here.   A few weeks ago look who was in town.  I just LOVE Ed Harris.

And let’s not forget Sam Worthington (Avatar) who was also turning quite a few heads (the younger crowd).

After seeing this photo, you might want to think twice about going to a Sleep Lab to get a cure for sleep apnea! My friend, Jim submitted himself to this tortuous event and as he said, “I failed the test”.

Last week I had a special visit from our friend and adopted daughter, Luana.  She arrived with her husband (newly weds) Gustavo and spent a week in NYC.  Timing was perfect because she got to meet Finley too and lucky for Luana – Finny decided to spare one of her band-aids for Luana’s boo-boo!

FAB FOTO FRIDAY

I know, I know, it’s just soooooo New York! BUT hey Central Park IS New York AND it is a treasure trove for a photographer!  The wildlife alone provides numerous opportunities to capture the habits and habitats of the wild things that inhabit its 843 acres right smack in the middle of New York City.  Of course the animals, birds and flora are only one area of interest to the man with the camera;  There are playgrounds where the City kids can be found frolicking,  the Children’s Zoo, or the Carousel.  Or the tennis courts, basketball courts, roller skating area, bike paths, walking trails, bridle paths and baseball fields where one can snap photos of urban athletes.  There are dozens of statues of iconic figures, an Obelisk which is the oldest public monument in North America, Belvidere Castle, Bethesda Fountain (where you can always find street performers) and the Great Lawn and Strawberry Fields.  NEED I SAY MORE?
