CONSPIRACY THEORY WEDNESDAY

Conspiracy theories have been around a long, long time.  Some resurrect themselves periodically and some die a natural death or are replaced by even better ones!

BIG BROTHER is watching you and me….When the government-forced transition to digital TV was made, many theorists believed that miniature cameras and microphones were built into the newer TV sets and in the set top boxes;  all the better to spy on  you my dear.  And then there was the mind control factor.  By using digital technology, subliminal messages and advertising could be directed at viewers.   Just think how easy it would be to subvert your mind and feelings?

Whoooooeeee this is a good one for the books!

Big Brother is Watching You

I had a birthday last weekend and I decided that a Bowling Party would be great fun.  I actually had one many years ago so the idea to do it again has been on my mind for the last couple of years.  So much so in fact, that I have been collecting bowling trophies since then.  Whenever I came across a bowling trophy or prize I would buy it.  So for several years there has been a shoe box in a closet containing an odd assortment of trophies and treasures abandoned by their original winners.   Well, this was the year!  Check out the vintage bowling shirts!!

I gathered some friends, reserved the lanes using a party plan they offered that included two hours of bowling, shoes and pizza and wings and soda.    So  much for the soda…I bought drinks from the lounge.  I had hoped that the beer would loosen up my stiff joints and I might even get a strike!   LOL – other than our friend, Ron, strikes were pretty scarce all around.  But hey I figured most of us hadn’t bowled in YEARS so what could you expect?  Well, I for one, was hoping muscle memory would take over once I stopped trying – It didn’t!

A bowl of Strawberries.
Luscious Red Strawberries

May and June and early July are the best months to get local strawberries! Sweet, luscious, juicy red strawberries and what better time than the upcoming holiday weekend to have real strawberry shortcake?  There’s a twist or two in this old standby dessert  and I think it will make a world of difference and bring a level of sophistication and delight to the dish.

Depending on when you plan to serve, read the recipe carefully because the cream is prepared at least 5 hours prior to serving.  Good to do first thing in the morning for an afternoon or evening picnic or barbeque.

2  1/4 cups cold heavy cream, plus 2 TBS for brushing

20 large basil leaves plus 1/2 cup small or torn basil leaves

1/4 cup sugar

4  1/2 cups strawberries (1 lb 4 oz) sliced

3 TBS  confectioner’s sugar

Bring 1  1/2 cups of cream to a gentle simmer in a small saucepan over medium heat.  Bruise the large basil leaves by hitting repeatedly with the dull side of a knife and stir into the cream.  Remove from heat, cover tightly with plastic wrap and let steep for 25 minutes.  Strain through a fine sieve, pressing solids to extract liquid.  Refrigerate till very cold at least 5 hours.

Macerate strawberries with 1/4 cup sugar, plus more if needed, depending on sweetness of berries. Stir occasionally, for at least an hour.  Toss the berries with small basil leaves.

Whisk basil cream with confectioner’s sugar in the chilled bowl of a mixer on high speed until soft peaks form.

Mound basil cream on shortcake.  Spoon berries with juice on top

Recipe from Martha Stewar

I never thought of putting the whipped cream on the shortcake before the berries!  Which just goes to show you that you are never too old to learn a new trick.  This recipe is from Martha Stewart and I purposefully omitted her recipe for shortcake because I figure at least 75% of the people will buy those ready-made sponge cakes and maybe 10% will make their own short bread and I and the other 15% will make shortcakes from Bisquick.  And if you do use Bisquick, their recipe suggests you split the shortcake, fill with berries and top off with cream.  I’m going to sort of lightly break my shortcakes apart, then put the cream on and then the berries.  Can’t wait till this weekend.

Finished key lime pie.

Key Lime Pie

Ok yes it is Tuesday and I THOUGHT this week was going to be better in terms of getting things done on time.  Somehow, self-discipline is slipping away as a very late spring and summer state of mind take hold!  I know it sounds as if I just made up that excuse, I think I just did.  I am feeling a bit out of control lately and know I need to inject some what? some self-discipline? some exercise? YES to all but basically to go to bed earlier to get up earlier and then the day seems to just go better.  I would like to blame my spouse for most of the time/sleep problems and I do believe he is at the root of the problem, I know I must own my own behavior in these areas.  Well now that we have that settled, here are Monday’s Six Word Memoirs and there are only a couple.

Trying to get back on track – Me

I’m reaching out to all of you in my cyberspace and asking that you send in those SIX WORDS  that sum  up your day, your week, your life, your dreams, your passions, your loves, your problems.  I NEED your input and if you will just help me out a little in this area, I’m going to try to get back on track and keep the posts coming as I originally intended and promised. So there!!

There’s more than one “Terminator” in the news these days.  In fact I have some spectacular photos of a couple of them in action.  It seems it’s not just seeds and nuts upon which our feathered friends thrive.

Please be advised that these photos contain graphic  acts of  ornithological  violence, however, Mother Nature is responsible for the food chain and just be thankful that you are higher up than  these guys.  By the time I finished posting these photos I was scratching my head a lot.

An Oxymoron??

Buzzwords!  When did they creep into our conversation?  There are buzzwords used exclusively by Gen X and Gen Y, and Gen D(igital),  BUT the best buzzwords are used in corporate America!  That world is just FULL of buzzwords.  I wonder who started the trend, when did it become so cool to speak in acronyms?

And there are even buzzwords that describe blogging and bloggers and blogs themselves.

  1. Blahger:  A blogger whose message primarily consists of blah-blah-blah.
  2. Blalker:  Someone who uses a blog to stalk or hound another individual.
  3. Bleg:  To use one’s blog for assistance (usually for information, but occasionally for money).  One who does so is a blegger.
  4. Blogives:  Web log archives.  (Somewhere in the million blogs that fill  cyberspace, there must be something worth saving for posterity).
  5. Blogna sandwich:  When employees spend their time reading blogs during their lunch breaks
  6. BlookA book that began as a blog and someone figured they could make money off it if they published the same stuff on paper.
  7. Flyblogged:  The result of unwanted spam being posted to an open blog, just as flies stick to flypaper.  “I have just been comprehensively flyblogged”.  Coined by technology analyst Bill Thompson.
  8. Pajamahadeen: The new media watchdogs.  Bloggers who spend their days surfing the Net, challenging and fact-checking the traditional media.
  9. Splog:  A fake blog created by spammers as a home for their ads and scams.  Of the 7,000 new blogs started each day, nearly 10% are now splogs.
  10. Thought parsing:  To filter online blogs in a manner that allows you to see what others are thinking (or at least writing).

A very dear and old friend of mine poked me and cheered me on and up about my blog.  So this one’s for her, Susan Celtic Lady!

This side dish is perfect for  a quick meal.  Well in NYC, you know it’s pretty easy to order in and also very easy to buy a Roasted Chicken;   Seems like all the grocery markets have them as well as little chicken shops.  I know the phrase little chicken shops sounds funny to anybody outside of the City, but we really do have little storefront shops that cook and serve chicken, mainly grilled or whole roasted AND they deliver.   So a couple of Sunday nights ago, I had the roasted chicken and needed a quick and healthy (always)  side dish to go with it.

Sauteed Spinach and Tomatoes

1/4 cup olive oil

4  small shallots, thinly sliced

1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes

2 bunches (1  1/2 lb)  spinach (trimmed and washed) – I used two bags

coarse salt and ground pepper

grated Pecorino Romano cheese

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high.  Add 4 shallots and cook stirring often until soft and starting to brown, about 4 minutes.

Add  cherry or grape  tomatoes and cook until tomato skins are split and shallots are golden brown, from 2-4 minutes.

Gradually add the spinach, season with coarse salt and ground pepper, and cook until tender, 3 minutes or until all is in skillet and wilted.

To serve, sprinkle with the grated or shredded cheese.

Got the Bloggy-Blues!

a chart to describe the search engine market

Seek and ye shall find

Can’t seem to get the blog posts out in the order of topics of my week, for a couple of weeks now…true I’ve been busier than usual;  very busy working on an exclusive listing of mine which is sold ( I hope) and will be more officially sold once the contract is signed AND I did have Finley Ray over the weekend BUT still….

I look at the stats every day and the number of readers is amazing to me HOWEVER, they are not readers of these daily posts, these are people coming to the blog thru a search engine.  Of course if I were just counting numbers I should be thrilled BUT what the majority of visitors are coming to read is not what I’m writing about now!

Every day and I mean EVERY DAY, several people search for, are you ready for this? – CANDYLAND, or CANDYLAND GAME BOARD, and BUNDLING BOARD, and CARCANO, CLUE GAME and ROBIN BIRD. This seems strange to me and like I said if I was just interested in numbers, it would be gratifying.  BUT these readers are just one night stands, guerilla warfare readers.

Perhaps I shouldn’t complain – after all I made a decision early on that my blog would not just be an online diary of my life and I also knew having a structure to your blogs if you weren’t a niche blogger was the only way to keep on blogging and building your readership.  So here I am today, whining about the fact that most of the readers of this blog are one-timers and what they are coming here for is information, not me.  Can I handle this?

I want to write more personally than I have lately, however,  a lot of what is going on in my life I can’t share with the world; first of all this isn’t a personal diary blog, secondly, I don’t feel right about sharing some of the problems/stress I’ve been having for the last several months because it involves a couple of other people who didn’t sign up to have their lives exposed and I’m honoring that as best I can.  AND because if I started to write about a couple of these issues, this blog would become a rant like you wouldn’t believe!  There are things going on around me that are being dealt with in ways that I totally disagree with and find that handling to be ineffective and dumb.  The people that really know me, know how much I abhor stupid behavior, enabling and living in denial.  I’m a pragmatic bottom line person and believe you just do it!  I’ve had to bite  my tongue so many times lately, I’m sure there’s a huge hole in it.

OK, well having even said that much was a bit of a vent and I feel better already.  I also keep reminding myself of one of my favorite montras; people do what they want to do.  It’s so simple and yet so true.  You can talk till you’re blue in the face, you can reason, point out the logic, attempt to persuade and maybe the end result will be okay; However only if that person has come to believe/want to do it.

So now I still have to figure out why I haven’t posted a recipe in a couple of weeks, why my FAB FOTOS are always a day late, why I haven’t had a comment in a week!!! That is the worst of it, my readers…because either you’re not reading or what I’m writing is so banal it doesn’t evoke any comments.  What to do, what to do?? You know in my business which has always been real estate sales, when you are in a slump, the boss would say go back to the basics.

I’m going to try to do that which in my case was more of a mixture of personal satirical observations of my life and the world around me and follow the post schedule to stay on track.   I guess that means I need to look around me and use my creative writing skills to bring life’s every day adventures, foibles and characters to life in print in this blog.  There was a TV station whose slogan was “Characters welcome” – I need to bring in some characters, lol.

Getting back on track, this is Wednesday so I best find a conspiracy theory  that will enlighten us all!

The coat of arms of Pakistan displays the nati...

Pakistan Coat of Arms

Well it’s been just over two weeks since MAY DAY, May Day!  May 1, 2011 marked the demise of Al Queda‘s leader.  After ten years of hunting this killer and attempting to ferret him out of caves where we “thought” he was hiding out – poof! He was assassinated by American troops  in some very comfortable surroundings in Pakistan

And I thought throwing that out to my reader public as a Six Word Challenge might produce some interesting replies and it did indeed.  Not from SO many readers but thanks to one in particular I have several to post.

Yeah baby, War’s over now, right? – Spinny Liberal

he brought fear, it’s still here – Susan in the Grove

he took our innocence in 2001 – Susan in the Grove

the fear of when, how, where? – Susan in the Grove

want terrorism taken out of dictionary – Susan in the Grove

fear of terrorism or cold war? – Susan in the Grove

terrorism didn’t die with bin laden – Susan in the Grove

days of pre- 9/11, no more – Susan in the Grove

Bin Laden is dead; Now what?- Me

And from the book, NOT QUITE WHAT I WAS PLANNING, Six Word Memoirs By Writers Famous & Obscure:

Mom, Dad, Daphne, Owen. Who’s next? – Sean Wilsey

Which comes first: tequila or accident? – Penelope Whitney

Doing more for less is life – Rondell Conway

Cried, Defied, Denied, Sighed, Died, Reapplied. – Josh Garfield

A sundress will solve life’s woes. – Kristen Grimm

I think it’s time we channel our inner Hemingway again.  Life goes on, seasons change, holidays come and go and each day brings a new set of feelings, thoughts, events and incidents.  Please share some part of you with all of us and send it a Six Word Memoir on whatever is on your mind or in your heart.
