Goodnight is right!!! Oh dear God, hurricane fever has been here for days and NOW, Irene is almost here.

It all started for me on Thursday. Peter arrived late in the afternoon and I was still at the Tea Room finishing up and we decided to go to the store and pick up a few Finley items such as whole milk and orange juice without pulp.  Once I arrived at Wegman’s two things became instantly apparent;  Finley probably wasn’t coming to the Jersey Shore and Hurricane Irene was on her way – have you ever been in a major grocery store and seen all the bread shelves EMPTY?? I mean EMPTY!  We did get milk because after all, milk is PERISHABLE and everyone knows you are supposed to stock up on non-perishable foods.  I think all of Monmouth County is planning on eating Pb & J’s all weekend!!!

And so it began….no news except hurricane news, talk, talk, talk, only about the impending storm and plans A, B, and C formulated in each household.  Who was staying and who was going, that was the really BIG QUESTION.  My thoughts immediately were to stay and I  think at that point I wasn’t really comprehending the breadth and depth of what was to come.  I said, “well the apartment is safe and the cottage is vulnerable, so I need to be here to protect it.”  Peter thought about this and agreed.  We really didn’t think we would be in real danger, just that house might be in some and perhaps if we were here, we could prevent and/or protect.  The thought of being in NYC and watching the happenings and wondering what was happening to my sweet La Vie en Rose was quite disconcerting, so I said, “We’re staying”.  Thursday night seems much like any other night.  Peter even went to get me ice cream.

Friday dawned sunny and bright and the buzz was everywhere.  Some neighbors immediately started hauling in porch furniture and tying down everything else.  Mmmmm should we go after all?  Several conversations later, it was decided that Finley would be better off in NYC with her Daddy and her baby sister.  Chiara HAD to go to the middle of New Jersey to attend a wedding on Saturday;  she is a Bridesmaid.   I thought she would never get off “the Island” which was probably evacuating itself westward to the City.  But she made it, dropped them off and kept on going.  I hope for the bride’s sake some people come to this wedding.

I don’t hold out much hope though because the NEWS which was now broadcasting 24/7 alternated between Governor Christie declaring a State of Emergency on THURSDAY and Mayor Bloomberg saying the City was in the cross hairs of the storm and therefore, the subway and bus systems would be shut down, the news just got more dire by the hour.

By Friday afternoon, Peter and I had packed up the back yard furniture, put away the umbrella, turned the glass top table upside down, removed bird feeders, and with bungee cords anchored the trash cans and some chairs.  I moved the upstairs porch furniture into the guest room making my tiny cottage just that much more smaller.  Things were beginning to feel weird!

Ocean grove, police tape. beach is closed

Beach is CLOSED

Let’s go to the beach!  It was 4:00 the sun was still somewhat high in the sky so we took off to get a good long look-see at our beach not knowing when we would see it next or in what condition it would be.  There was police tape across the  entrances to the beach so we walked a ways to Bradley Beach and got onto the beach there.  We took our chairs and our books and sat down near the water’s edge for about an hour or so enjoying the last of the sunshine, sharing the experience with about 5 other people as far as the eye could see.  The tide was extraordinarily high which was the result of new moon.   Well clearly we were illegal and I heard later on that if you got caught going into the water, you could get a $500 fine.  Of course Peter had to push the envelope a bit and get his bathing suit wet which caused the young ticket taker on the boardwalk to come rushing down to inform us that the “main lifeguard” sent him down to tell us we could NOT be in the water.   Why didn’t someone tell the surfers that?  As we left the beach, two young surfer dudes, boards under arms and a young girl passed us on their way to the shore.  The young girl looked at Peter and shook her head and rolled her eyes.  Governor Christie told everybody to get off the beach in Asbury Park, they had enough tan, now get out!

From Here to Asbury Park

Friday night we had dinner out because it would probably be our last good meal once the power went out and surely it will, they say.  And in New York City, Broadway was shut down, the subways system cut back and Battery Park City under mandatory evacuation!  We received numerous calls imploring us to return to NYC and truly we vacillated so many times I couldn’t tell you what the number was, but something has kept us here.  It didn’t help that the beach town north of us and two towns to the south of us were under mandatory evacuation, and the Governor reversed the highways so you could only leave and not come, they even made the tolls free.   There is a bit of foolhardy adventurism at play, the swagger that comes from having toughed it out and not the least, the need to be here to protect the homestead.  At 11:30pm an email alert came through from Neptune Township informing us that Broadway from Ocean to Pilgrim Pathway was under mandatory evacuation: WOW we are two houses in from Pilgrim Pathway.  I sure hope the storm surge knows where it is supposed to stop.  Tomorrow is another day and Irene is expected to hit the Jersey Shore in the early evening.

That Was Then

You know there are a lot of people who complain that we have become a society of keyboard krazies, communicating only thru email, texting in 3 letter abbreviations, sending emoticons to let another person know whether we’re  happy or sad.  There’s some truth to that BUT, on the other hand, the internet has opened up a world of social networking and a way for even us baby boomers to stay in touch with family and friends.  I can skype with my grandchildren, I can blog AND I can play scrabble online with a dear friend who lives 1000 miles south of me  during the winter and sails off the coast of Maine summer BUT who through the miracle of microchips and cell towers continues to play with me while even on board. Just think, she can be online on board.

Heather and I became friends when we both worked at Compass Realty in Connecticut, a hundred years ago. We were Sales Associates then and life was good “in the Valley” .  She lived in Simsbury and I lived in Avon.  We never became “couple” friends possibly because of who I was married to at the time but we shared ideas and anecdotes, kid advice and even did  a couple of deals together.  Besides the fact that she was always smiling, I have one outstanding memory of Heather.  I had to move out of my house after my divorce and moving out and cleaning up turned out to be a major chore.  I can still see Heather on her hands and knees cleaning the laundry room floor where the washer and dryer had been.  I was so touched by her help to begin with and the fact that she was tackling one of the dirtiest jobs in the house just floored me!  This wasn’t my best friend, this wasn’t family, and she came over to help and pitched in to ease the burden of a very painful day.  I know I thanked you then, but let me do so again….Thank you , Mrs. Smith!

Now why do I bring this up today? Well the story continues…. I leave my life in CT behind and eventually move to New York City.  Heather and I had exchanged a few emails over time and her daughter moved to Brooklyn.  One day about 10 years ago ( I think) she came to the City and we had a brief lunch.  It was so nice to see a familiar face in town.  Then along came My  Space and Facebook and Heather and I connected again.  She loves to play Scrabble as I do and so for the past couple of years (literally) we have been playing Scrabble online thru Facebook.  Our games would go on for weeks at a time….in the beginning we would have to postpone our games during sailing season, but now that has all changed – YAY!

Yesterday, I was helping a friend out in her Tea Room when word came to me in the kitchen that a Heather and her husband were in the Dining Room and wanted to talk to me – I thought someone wanted to make a reservation.  OMG, it was Heather, that Heather and her husband, Jeff. WOWIE! They were heading south along the Jersey Shore to meet up with one of their kids and because I’ve written so many blogs and posted so many photos of Ocean Grove, they took the time to get off the Parkway and check out the town and me.

It was quite amazing to find Heather and Jeff standing in front of me in Ocean Grove.  They got themselves in the Grove and then called Peter at home in NYC. He told her where I was and where our little cottage was and it turned out that they were practically two doors away.  I know it gives me great pleasure to surprise someone in the hopes that my visit is going to not only surprise but please.  They were grinning from ear to ear and YES, guys your visit was so damn cool!!!

Thank you for taking the time for a detour that brought a smile to my face and joy to my heart. You are very special!

Tony Bennett performing at a Library of Congre...

Tony Bennett

I expected to be thrilled, impressed and entertained last Saturday night;  We went to see and hear Tony Bennett in concert in the Great Auditorium.  I didn’t expect to cry…

The show opened with Tony’s daughter, Antonia, who sang several songs to warm up the audience.  This audience did not need warming up.  The auditorium holds about 6,000 people and my guess would be that there weren’t more than 600 empty seats and that includes a wraparound balcony!  Antonia is sweet looking and sounding, but certainly lacks real depth to her voice.  She doesn’t have the timbre and resonance of a singer with a strong voice.  Unable to sustain or project, Antonia manipulated  the microphone by pulling it away from her mouth as she trailed the last notes of a line.  Oh well, this is not about her anyway.

Tony walked on stage to a very long and loud standing ovation.  He was clearly thrilled to receive it and to be on stage.  He appears to love performing;  He plays to the crowd, he sings and he relates bits of his career and who he sang and worked with along the way to stardom.  He ends almost every song with either his arms raised up as if in “ta dah” and “there you have it” or salutes the audience with two thumbs up.  I don’t remember (that far back)  if these gestures were always part of his performance or not, but then again, who cares? He has the pipes and a magical velvety-all-in-the-right-places voice.

He sang song after song, sometimes really belting it out and you wonder how does a man his age still maintain that voice and the ability to sustain such high notes for so long.  Yes, he was quite surprising in that regard.  We were regaled with the likes of Smile, I Wanna Be AroundFly Me to the Moon, and The Best is Yet to ComeAnd then he charmed us all with what he referred to as his hits;  The Way You Look Tonight, Because of You, The Very Thought of You, As Time Goes By, Once Upon A Time, Because of You and of course,  I Left My Heart in San FranciscoJust AMAZING! Really freaking amazing!  The entire audience leapt to their feet at the end of I Left My Heart in San Fransisco and it was truly one of the longest standing ovations I ever witnessed.   Of course he was perfect for the Auditorium crowd, 95% of whom listened to his soft crooning voice during their teen-age and twenty-something years.  Oh and how those memories flood back to you!

A summer night on the Jersey Shore, in a remarkable venue – an enormous wooden structure that is well over a hundred years old, and Tony Bennett singing love songs to you.  I have never ever sat in the front row of a concert;  Last Saturday night, Peter and I had front row seats  and I sat there mesmerized by his performance.  Was it that he sang so well?  No, of course not; He was a great singer, now he is a legend who still can hit some of those high notes,  and sing a love song to every woman in the room at the same time.

I’m not sure exactly what song put me over the edge;  The first tear rolled down my cheek somewhere between The Very Thought of You and Once Upon A Time. Yes, the words are beautiful.  Yes,  Tony crooned the words beautifully but I don’t think those two things brought on the tears.  Well at least not completely.  When you are my age and you know you are closer to the end of your life than the beginning and you see someone 20 years older than yourself doing something he not only does so well but also loves doing it, you, well at least I, was really emotionally moved. In a way, this consumate artist who makes every song his own and has been doing so for 60 years of his life and mine, creates a level of comfort that makes him seem like an old friend.  The tears are the good-byes to my youth, the days when I heard Tony Bennett sing so many of these songs.  Listening to songs that you probably made out to, danced to and day-dreamed over what seems like another lifetime ago, it dawns on you that it was a lifetime ago!

Tony sang his last song, blew kisses to the audience and left the stage.  The crowd would have none of it. They stood up, clapped and clapped and clapped some more.  The musicians stayed on stage so I thought maybe he would come back and he did!  He sang one more and still they wanted more.  He tried to leave the stage and the audience applauded longer and louder than before.   So he brought Antonia out and they sang a duet and then he was gone.

There was one other special moment during the concert and this had more to do with where we were than just with this great singer.  Tony Bennett, like every other single performer I’ve seen at the Auditorium said that this building, this great venue is a magnificent structure in which to sing.  To prove that they don’t build them like this anymore, he asked that the entire sound system be turned off and then he sang;  his words washing over  the audience much like the shore a couple of hundred feet away!  Clearly he was heard at the back of the room and top of the balcony, proving the mastery of his own talent and that of the craftsmen who built the Great Auditorium 140years ago.

We went to a concert last night starring Linda Eder and Steve Tyrell.  Steve was the first act and I actually had never heard of him or if I did, I forgot.  He is  like what I would call ” a working actor” and one who plays character roles.   Now I hope that doesn’t throw you all off but it is an  impression I got.  He’s been around a long time in the business and as far as I was able to determine he is not a singer who ever recorded one of his own songs or sang one that became a hit.  HOWEVER,  he is a very good singer even now and I say that because he has been singing, song-writing, musical directing for over 40 years.  He performs at the Cafe Carlyle, one of Manhattan’s premier rooms, he has sung songs in several movies starring Diane Keaton, he has produced hits with Rod Stewart and Diana Ross.  He just finished recording his ninth album, a compilation of love songs.  He was really very good and his musical selections, many from his new album, were spot on with the Auditorium crowd.  In between songs, he talked about famous lyricists and songwriters, and which earlier artists were his greatest influence.  Steve received more than one standing and they begged him to sing just one more and he did.

He is an entertainer, he plays to the audience, he sang what they wanted to hear…and the reward for that is applause, appreciation, a standing ovation and those calls for just one more!  Is he an artist? Well, every performer, actor, singer, writer, poet, photographer, musician, painter believes they are an artist and in that sense they are,  as they have mastered an art form.  Steve Tyrell is talented, has a good voice and is at ease performing.  He was the warm-up act for the star, Linda Eder.

Linda Eder is cabaret singer and Broadway performer par excellence!  Her voice is an instrument not to be believed!  On the road to stardom, Linda had a 12 week winning streak on the Star Search show of the late 1980’s.  She is an accomplished soprano, her range is wide and her notes crystal clear.  Listening to her belt out a tune,  the mastery of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand quickly comes to mind.  In fact, it has been said of Linda that she is a Barbra Streisand wannabe, which she handily refuted with the retort, “No, in fact, I am a Martha Stewart wannabe”- ahh, a woman after my own heart lol.

So here we have before us a very attractive woman, with an astonishing set of vocal cords and I am ready to be regaled with the great American Songbook standards she has been known to perform so beautifully.  Alas, that is NOT what we heard.  In the years since I last saw Eder perform, she has been on Broadway, married and divorce.   For years, by her own admission, Linda sang only the songs her husband wrote.  And that may explain a lot of what I found to be wrong with her performance last night.

Believe me, I don’t tout myself as either a musicologist or an expert on performance and entertaining.   So the theory I am about to espouse may have no merit or a leg to stand on…but you read it and let me know what you think.

The biggest problem with Linda Eder’s performance was really two-fold;  First of all like many artists, Eder took this performance opportunity to promote the songs from her new album, one that is comprised solely of her ex-husband’s songs.  He is Frank Wildhorn, a Broadway composer, best known for his musical Jekyll  and Hyde.  You know that with very few exceptions, most songs written for a Broadway show, do not stand up well on their own.  They are story songs, songs that move the play along and/or express an action or emotion of the moment.   The glory songs of Berlin, Gershwin, Rogers & Hart, Arlen and other great songwriters of the past that emerged from a Broadway musical to become a hit are not the kind of songs that make up a modern day musical.   There are exceptions, several from Andrew Lloyd Webber plays but it is not the norm.  Story songs have many more words than the lyrics of the past.  Think of Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered or Come Rain or Come Shine.  These are lyrics that have rhyming meter, are easy to hear and remember, NOT so with the selection of songs chosen by Ms. Eder to perform.   She told her audience how beautiful the words were to several songs she sang, the words, however, were a mystery to me and I believe most of the audience.  I listened to what people leaving the auditorium had to say.  Universally they loved her voice and then said of course they weren’t familiar with the songs at all which is also a way of stating you didn’t really hear the words anyway.

My husband and I spent an hour after the concert discussing this disappointing factor in her performance.  During the show, we turned to one another and said, ” I can’t understand a word she’s saying”.   Now as to WHY?  Peter said that her technique overcame clarity and I wholeheartedly agreed;  It’s her strong voice and her style of inflection in which we lose the words.  It’s not that she swallowed the words the way some singers do, and she wasn’t over-powered by the metallic shrieking of an electric guitar.  No, I believe it was as he said, her technique along with a few other factors;

Linda Eder is a cabaret singer.  Cabaret by definition is a small room performance, an intimate occasion between singer and audience.  Often the songs are more ballad-like than well-known standards and often written by either the performer or by a lesser-known composer or lyricist, nonetheless, still an artist in their own right.   The Great Auditorium is a concert hall, not a cabaret room.   The acoustics are fabulous but they are monstrous as  compared to say, the Oak Room at The Algonquin Hotel.  Add in the factor that lots of Broadway songs especially the show stoppers are sung in a belt-it-out style.  So what we heard were a lot story-type songs with long sentences sung by a high range soprano with a slightly theatrical style in a massive hall.   Did she not enunciate her words?  I don’t think so.  I am basing this on several clips I watched of her earlier performances where every word was clearly heard.  AND, in fact, last night she did sing Blue Skies by Irving Berlin and it was perfectly audible-was that because we were already familiar with the words?  Maybe and by the way, there were probably 100 fewer words in that song that any of the new Wildhorn songs Eder performed.

As a sort of test, I watched a YOUTUBE clip of Barbra Streisand performing the rapid dialogue song “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and then one of Eder singing the same song.  It was almost as difficult to really understand the words sung by Barbra even though I have listened to that song hundreds of times.  Too many words belted out.

To wrap up this very long commentary and hopefully not to leave you with a negative impression of one the BEST voices in today’s vocal community, let me say that Ms. Eder is an artist, her instrument is her voice, she is a Broadway performer not necessarily the same as an entertainer.  She was not at ease with her audience, she wasn’t able to converse easily the audience in between songs.  She refused a request even though it was at the end of her performance and would have been the just one more  and one she probably could have sung a capella even if the band didn’t have the arrangement.  All of this is NOT to say you shouldn’t see her perform. In fact if you have the opportunity you should run not walk to the ticket booth because to hear a VOICE the likes of Linda Eder’s is a rare treat and truly music to your ears!

Yesterday Finley Ray arrived for the weekend and in less than 24 hours we already had a few adventures.  We went to a book fair and she was in her element for sure.  She just plopped down on the concrete floor and went through several books discarding those she decided were not worth taking home and choosing very carefully the keepers.   The Ladies auxiliary had set up a hot dog concession and the wafting odor of hot dogs was too irresistable for her, so one hot dog with ketchup was ordered.  Then it was off to the boardwalk where we didn’t go to the beach per se because rain was imminent but still we had time to take off our shoes and walk in the sand.

Picking Papa Pete up at the train station was going to be a treat in hopes that we would see the “big” train.  Alas he arrived before we did.  Still we had another stop, this time to the Laurie’s Vegetable & Fruit stand in Neptune.   Laurie  is so friendly and warm and since it had begun to rain and we were the only customers at the time, she invited Finley up onto the counter to have some fresh blueberries.  The fruit stand was originally a gas station in the 1930’s and there were still some remnants of its origins and don’t you know, little Miss Finny announced that this was a garage!  Yes,I have a genius granddaughter.  The rain was dripping heavily from the garage doors that were opened and Fin realized as every little child does that running back and forth in the rain can be so much fun.  First of all you get big drop marks on your clothes and your hair gets wet, water runs down your cheeks and soon you have water squishing between your toes in your sandals (hers were jelly thank goodness).

Dinner on a TV tray is fun too especially if you are getting to watch a movie at the same time!  I think Finley had her first corn on the cob Friday night because she didn’t seem too familiar with the concept.

It was a no-nap day due some unforseen circumstances and the fact that Finley and I hit the road shortly after she arrived.  So by dinner time I could tell she was fading but she refused to cave in until after her two movies had been seen.  First a bath in Gigi’s blue drink bucket ( a cottage without a bathtub can be a real drawback when you have kids around), then the movies and we are off to bed.  A promise made to read two books seemed unlikely as I was pretty sure she wouldn’t insist.  Sure enough she was just about asleep by the time I finished one of the new books we had bought at the Book Sale.

She turned her head, closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep.  So deep and so fast that I ran downstairs to get my camera to capture this photo.  Take heed Mommy, I used a flash! Well of  course it was PAST her regular bed time, lol. lol.

And then there were TWO!

Not to be left out, while I was snapping this shot, another member of the family joined in to make it a menagerie a trois!

And Then There Were Three!

Saturday morning , errr, rather early in  the morning, Finley was thoughtful enough to get out of bed and go downstairs and bring up two videos that she thought we all should watch together in bed.  So of course we did.

She was very busy around the house that morning, actually helping me clean.  She insisted on having a paper towel spritzed with Simple Green so she could wipe down tables, cabinets and anything else I pointed at.

We plopped her in the stroller and took off to the Book Fair again, this time so Peter could peruse the aisles in search of literary treasures.  Finley made off with 2 more books and surprise, surprise, one of them is Cinderella.  It was so bloody hot and I was hoping to get over to the North End beach to see the sand sculptures.  By the time we walked east to the boardwalk, and then to North Beach, I was already over it as far as viewing any sand castles.  Just as we approached the staircase to the beach, Finny announced that she had to pee.  Just GREAT-no bathrooms at this end of the boardwalk, the restaurant located there is closed and so I had to walk all the way back to the Pavillion and talk my way past the ticket taker to get her onto the beach where there were some bathrooms.  NOT pleasant restrooms at all,  and we had to cut the line as she was jumping up and down literally so who would make a little girl wait? Truth be told I don’t think I have ever been on a public beach with decent bathrooms. Sorry to say that the sculptures weren’t worth the hike, the sun and the hot sand 😦

We headed home by way of Day’s Ice Cream because having ice cream in the middle of the day is just the perfect pick-me-up on a blistering summer afternoon.  The girls in the ice cream shop tried to convince Finley that she wanted strawberry because it was pink or party cake and after she tasted each and turned up her nose, she ordered just exactly what she told me she wanted;  soft vanilla with sprinkles on top!

Finally we made it to the beach.

At first she didn’t even want to get her feet wet and she raced back to the sand each time a wave lapped anywhere near where she was standing.  Peter finally got her into the water by splashing her and letting her splash him which brought forth shrieks and uncontrollable giggles.  Soon she was sitting down and letting the waves foam up around her knees.  And before long, she was in the water being held, swung and dipped while wave after wave crashed into her each one eliciting one of Finley’s ear-piercing shrieks and I just know how much the people who were in sand chairs down at the water reading, really and truly loved that sound!

I wish I dared to get in the waves with the camera so I could have taken a photograph of her loving having the waves crash on her.  Finally, it was strongly suggested that she might want to make a sand castle…

After a bath to remove sand from places one would never expect sand to land, Fin was ready for bed.  Again,it was a one book night because this little water baby was very tired.

Sunday was tea party day for Finley Ray.  I was helping my friend, Jane who runs a Tea Room and so about lunch time, Peter brought Finny over to the Tea Room so she too could attend a Teddy Bear Tea as they are known when kids come to High Tea.

Believe it or not she ate EVERYTHING!  It was a blistering hot day so off to the beach we went and this time there was no hesitation.  Finley was shrieking through the waves as soon as she hit the shore line.  This time she was so sandy that only a shower would do to get her clean.

I thought about the title of this blog…I wonder how many people will pick up on it because of the words Jersey Shore?  It conjures up images of Snookie, The Situation, Windmill hot dogs and a Jerseylicious look!  Ocean Grove couldn’t be further from those images and here we are in the heart of the Jersey Shore.  Our magical little town ( I always refer to it that way) is quaint, lovely, and prides itself on being very American;  Flags and bunting are everywhere.

No Refunds for the Weather!

There are many ways to celebrate a birthday;  Personally I like the idea of parades, barbeques, fireworks, floats and ice cream socials as a way to commemorate a birthday.  Mmmm maybe next year!?

I always maintain that La Vie en Rose is in work in progress but perhaps this confection of a cottage is almost done since we both swear we certainly can’t add or put another thing into the house.   Murray was here on Sunday, he opted to come even though the weather was bad and he hadn’t seen Stacey and Matt who had arrived on Saturday, in a long time.

Murray took some great little snippet photos of what I refer to as Life in Pink;

The front porch is pinker than ever! My friend Jane, who owns the Lilligaard Hotel has been doing some redecorating and I’ve been the lucky recipient of some cast-offs!  The new pink wooden rocker  as well as some beautiful pink and turquoise floral cushions have definitely enhanced the front porch.

Squirrels are the official mascots at La Vie en Rose.  Peter feeds them all year round.  On the rare occasion when a live squirrel isn’t on the porch looking for a hand-out, we always have our ornamental friend.

All the floral beauty isn’t just in the front of the cottage.  This year I put a huge planter of pink and white petunias in a white wicker planter next to the shed.

By the way, squirrels aren’t the only wildlife that get fed on a regular basis.  The birds have feeders in the backyard a couple of Blue Jays show up from time to time for a peanut treat also.  Bold and brazen, they are not fazed by humans, at least not when there’s a peanut in sight.

Today turned out to be one early summer’s all time great sunny and not too humid days!  What a day for a parade!  And so Ocean Grove, known as God‘s Square Mile at the Jersey Shore held their annual Fourth of July parade.   Very small town and just the kind of parade I love for this holiday.  Hometown parades are full of charm and just about everybody else;  Today, we saw Police, a local dance academy, Revolutionary-garbed riflemen, Rainbow Girls, Shriners, local tennis club, fire trucks, the Historical Society…well you get the picture, need I go on??

And what’s one of the best things about this parade?  Most of the marchers throw penny candy to the crowd.  I was very happy to be standing next to these two young men, Jordan and Jayden because I love getting the candy but certainly shouldn’t eat it – so I gave it to the boys!  I knew their pockets would never hold all the candy, so I gave Jayden a brown paper bag I had and you can see in the picture how full it was by the end of the parade.  It’s great to be a grandma because then the worry of the eventual sugar high never even enters your mind!

It’s Monday, it’s officially Memorial Day, the last day of long weekend.  You know when you work in an office, everyone wishes each other a restful relaxing weekend;  Now I don’t really work in an office on a daily basis and no one wished me a R&R weekend and I wonder if someone had, would the weekend have been any different? With me, it’s hard to tell because as my husband will attest, I never sit down and read a book, I never stop moving and I’m ALWAYS working!

So this is how my Memorial Day weekend played out;

We arrived on Thursday afternoon and opened up the cottage.  We are doing the Spring Flea Market next weekend so we brought LOTS of stuff down and it all needed to be wrapped or put in some sort of protective covering (most of this load was ephemera) so Peter started in doing that.  It had been a glorious  sunny day so about 6pm I strong-armed Peter into going for a walk on the boardwalk.  After all I think it’s only appropriate that once in a while we visit the ocean just to make sure it’s still there and remind ourselves why we come here!  And on our way back home, we stopped to say hi to Susan and Jim-small town you know!  Oh yes, when we arrived we found an empty bird feeder, grass a foot high and both the rose bush and the peony plants in full bloom

The night before (at 10pm) I sauteed vegetables and chicken strips and packed them to bring along.  Thank goodness, dinner was going to be easy-I added that mixture to some linguine and made a light sauce from some broth, pasta water, and olive oil and lots of cheese.  Then I got a phone call from my friend Jane who owns one of the largest B&B’s in town.  She had a funeral to go to on Friday and needed someone to babysit the Inn.  And she needed someone to do so from noon to 10pm!  Her cousin was coming to stay so it was agreed that her cousin would be in charge till 3 or 4pm and then it was my turn.   That meant that the 10 errands I had to do on Friday had to start out pretty early!  And I needed to go over there tonight to get a lesson on how to check in the guests.

Friday morning; Racing around, breakfast, showers, feed the cats, make up the errand list and let’s get the hell out of the house and the phone rings – it’s Jane and her cousin hasn’t left her house yet and Jane has to leave in an hour!!  I said I would be there but Jane knew I had hoped to get a lot done before we were relegated to the hotel.  In the end, she put a note on the door saying Check In at 2pm.  Hoping her cousin would arrive by then, I set off to run around.  First we stopped at Rite Aid so I could pick up some vitamin supplements.  Next it’s Habitats for Humanity to drop off 14 videos as a donation.  Anyone who really knows me that this little act of removing 14 videos from my life or rather Peter’s was a major event.  Of course he brought in about 8 so I really only subtracted 6…oh well!  Then I dashed into Wegman’s and Peter went to their liquor store to get you know what!  Wegman’s was having their annual flower and plant sale and once I saw this great large pot of deep purple petunias I knew it would be perfect next to the rose bush.

We flew out of that plaza and went to the Pet Smart store to buy cat food and a new litter mat.  Then over to Michael’s because I wanted to replace the ratty-looking bouquet on our bedroom porch.  It’s possible that the Gemini in me was in high gear because it took me forever to decide on the color combination of the bouquet.  In the end, bright yellow forsythia, turquoise and yellow gerber daisies, and a few white flowers made a colorful arrangement.  Last stop before home was Starbucks because  I needed fortification for my job.   At the last moment Peter said he should pop into a thrift shop to buy a belt.  In and out and no belt.

I called the hotel and there was no answer so I hit the panic button and insisted Peter drive me over even though we might lose the much-desired parking spot in front of the house!  But when I got there, her cousin was there, she just wasn’t answering the phone!!!  Well I went into the office and the first thing I noticed was that there was no paper in the fax machine, the computer was closed and where the hell was the registry book?  My lesson from last night depended on these things.  I found the book, snatched some paper from the printer to put in the fax machine which immediately started to spew forth MORE reservations.  I have to say I did really well – assigned rooms, filed the paperwork and then said I would be back in a couple of hours.

We went to garage to get some bins out to price the items and for me to finish the list of things that belong to Laura that we are selling.  The car just would NOT start!  After a half hour,  I sent Peter to stop in at our mechanic’s garage to see if he could help us start up the Met.  Holiday weekend, Friday at 4pm – GONE, well what did we expect?  So we pushed and pushed and got the car back into the garage – it was much easier getting it out.   Let the wrapping begin! We did have a nice break in the work when Trish and Ron showed up.  Just a neighborly visit and one of my favorite things about Ocean Grove, small town you know.

We had made dinner plans with Jim and Susan to dine al fresco on the front porch of the hotel, however the wind was whipping around and that didn’t seem like such a good idea after all.  So when they arrived,  I gave them a tour of the hotel and we opted to order pasta dishes from Luigi’s and eat in the tea room.  Very nice to dine by ourselves in a quiet atmosphere in such lovely surroundings!  I’m not going to go too too far into what turned out to be the lively dinner  conversation; Seems that there was a big  brouhaha over the Neptune H.S. graduation being held in the Great Auditorium because there was a movement to eliminate any religious songs or prayers since everyone is not Christian while they were at it, the ACLU and a certain grandmother thought the religious wording should be covered up as well as the big cross on the outside of the building.  Covering the cross was the line in the sand that  the Camp Meeting Association was not about to cross and initiate a secular precedent.  Anyway, it certainly was a very interactive conversation.

Saturday morning dawned early for us as this was the morning of CMA flower and plant sale and the Historical Society’s antique auction.  As I headed over to the plant sale, Peter got us seats for the auction and checked out the merchandise.  I came back with geraniums and petunias in time to look over the items.  Luckily there was nothing there I couldn’t live without, although Peter picked up a children’s teaching kit all about art.  Interesting but dated.  On the gorgeous day that Saturday was and opening day at the beach, I couldn’t stand being inside anymore so we left.

Saturday afternoon turned out to be yard clean up day!  I finally spread the rest of the mulch, Peter mowed the grass  and raked up mounds of the cut grass. I weeded, he cleaned the grill which was quite a process and I swept up.  We had a 7:00pm barbeque to go to: Nice!

Going to a cook-out at Joe’s is always fun and Michael was going to be there and a friend of his as well as Monica, a neighbor and Elena an old friend.  Jim and Susan were there and Elena invited a friend, Richard and our friend, Heide came bringing an amazing salad!   Everything was set out perfectly.  Arranged with detail in mind – Joe is a lovely host.  I can SO relate to him about entertaining – he is cleaning up as the night goes on and in the end, the barbeque grill has been washed and every thing is sparkly clean – Yes Joe!

You’re wondering why I am outlining every detail then let me tell you.  I’ve  been running all weekend; I haven’t read the paper, I haven’t read a book or magazine, nor have I watched a movie.  It’s been on the go and then some.

Our friend Murray(YES that Murray!) was due to arrive on Sunday morning AND late Saturday afternoon we listened to a voice mail left by our friend, Paul who said he and his wife Karen were going to come down on Sunday!  Glad they’re coming BUT now I have to go to grocery store early in the morning.  I thought about what to serve, made my grocery list and hoped to get out to Wegman’s before my first guest arrived.

Sunday morning dawned yet another beautiful day and I was happy to be out and about by 9:00am, first Starbucks and then the grocery store.  As soon as I got home I set about prepping for our cook-out dinner.  I had decided to make the Strawberry Basil Shortcake that I featured last Tuesday.  First the cream and basil and while that was steeping, I began peeling, seeding and chopping cucumbers to make a batch of Cucumber Coolers (check out tomorrow’s Tasty Tidbits). The meat was thawing, I sliced the strawberries and macerated them, and took out platters, serving pieces and pots that would be needed. There was a sort of street fair in Bradley Beach on the boardwalk so I suggested that Peter and Murray take a long walk.

Soon thereafter, Karen  and Paul arrived after having a horrific time with their car.  Karen owns a 1999 Porsche, truly a classic.  They were going to drive down to the shore but needed gas and when they stopped they discovered that the car’s computer system had locked everything up including the gas tank cover!  Paul managed to get that open without damaging it and the good news is that once they arrived here, they parked and then re-parked the car.  What that did was reset the computer, essentially re-booted the car.  Whew!!!

Time to unwind on the porch, have something cold to drink and a nosh.

After some refreshments on the porch we all headed off to the boardwalk where the fair was and since Murray had already been there, he peeled off to the opposite end of town with his camera and this is some of what he saw.

Strolling in the sun, window shopping along the boardwalk, we ran into Jim and Susan – small town, you know!  I bought a beautiful pink and purple striped scarf/shawl and Peter bought me some outrageous hot pink sun glasses.

Outrageous Sun Glasses

Back home and it must be time for a martini on the porch!  While they are all drinking, I’m in the kitchen steaming clams, cooking asparagus and making and baking short cakes.  The hors d’oeuvres menu: Cheese and Crackers, Olives, Bococini, Pepperdews, Cherry Stone clams on the half shell with Asparagus Tips and melted  Lemon Dill  finishing sauce.

Once all that was out, I washed the outdoor dishes, set the table and Karen made the salad which evolved into practically a main dish.  She put together corn kernels, fennel, cherry tomatoes, avocado, feta cheese and salad greens. The dinner menu:  Bloody Mary marinated flank steak on the grill, baked beans, asparagus, and the terrific salad.  Dessert was the Strawberry Shortcake and coffee. It was well past 11:00pm before Peter and I finished cleaning up, washing dishes and putting things away!

And so the weekend slipped by…Monday morning we had an early morning shower but the sun came out soon thereafter and a beach day was born.  But first, I asked Peter to put some more screens in.  Not sure what I did besides sift through hundreds of Murray’s photos to pick out the pictures used in the previous blog as well as saving many many more which you will see in the near future.

Peter and I went to the beach and marveled that here we were, sitting on beach, looking at the beautiful waves.  The beach was full but not crowded and the water was icy cold.  My winter white skin stood out among the already-tanned bods.  I think it’s a good idea to tan in your backyard before going to the beach, especially to get the back of these thighs.  You know I’m convinced that a good tan takes at least 5 pounds off your thighs!

All play and no work, ha ha, ha – we went home and Peter painted a scratch on a kitchen cabinet and decided to paint the top of the kitchen ceiling light fixture – OMG what a nightmare!  It came apart where it shouldn’t have and even the live wires became undone.  I was so scared and Peter needed me to hold this very heavy light fixture above my head while I stood on a step stool and he attempted to put the wires back.  I was really sorry I had already taken a shower because now I was sweating and my arms were aching.  To get the damn thing back on the ceiling took us almost 45 minutes! Tomorrow I’m going  to Home Depot to get a new light.

Last but not least, we went to the Lilligaard Hotel to have dessert with Jane and Dick and her cousin and fiancee.  The ocean was pounding for some reason, you could smell the familiar oceany smells so we sat on the porch and it was delightful.

It’s past midnight and time to call it a weekend!!!!

I had a birthday last weekend and I decided that a Bowling Party would be great fun.  I actually had one many years ago so the idea to do it again has been on my mind for the last couple of years.  So much so in fact, that I have been collecting bowling trophies since then.  Whenever I came across a bowling trophy or prize I would buy it.  So for several years there has been a shoe box in a closet containing an odd assortment of trophies and treasures abandoned by their original winners.   Well, this was the year!  Check out the vintage bowling shirts!!

I gathered some friends, reserved the lanes using a party plan they offered that included two hours of bowling, shoes and pizza and wings and soda.    So  much for the soda…I bought drinks from the lounge.  I had hoped that the beer would loosen up my stiff joints and I might even get a strike!   LOL – other than our friend, Ron, strikes were pretty scarce all around.  But hey I figured most of us hadn’t bowled in YEARS so what could you expect?  Well, I for one, was hoping muscle memory would take over once I stopped trying – It didn’t!
