Did you know that there was an Easter Egg Hunt going on right now in New York City?  You didn’t?  Well where have you been?  Fabergé  is sponsoring this Big Egg Hunt.  Now you may think when I say BIG, I mean that there are lots of eggs and in fact there are LOTS!  In fact spread out through the 5 Boroughs there are 260 eggs.  But really, how could anyone find an egg in the middle of Manhattan, no matter how many there were?  Easily because….first of all these eggs are GINORMOUS and that’s what I meant by BIG.

The Fauxbergé Eggs have been created by the likes of Caroline Herrera, D*D*Face, Naeem Khan, and Ralph Lauren.  To quote:

“The initiative will see over 260 large egg sculptures, each designed by globally renowned artists, designers, architects, photographers and brands placed throughout the five boroughs from April 1st to 17th, 2014. The Hunt will benefit conservation organization, Elephant Family and Studio in a School, a program that brings visual arts to New York City’s public schools.”

My dear friend, Gail who as you all know is the best Sourcerer I know, turned me onto the eggs.  And lucky Gail, there are three of those Eggs right in the Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum where she works.  Now I actually was at the Museum last week and did NOT see these Eggs;

Seriously you have to wonder what else I must have missed!

Of course there’s the great fun in just hunting them down and you have until April 17th to find them all AND to make the hunt really enticing, you can download an app which will map out the locations of the eggs and when you check in at each Egg location, your name will be entered into a sweepstakes and 3 lucky winners will receive an extraordinary gem-encrusted pendant created by Fabergé, as if you were a Russian Czar!

It was really difficult to pick out the Top Ten Easter Eggs but somebody had to do it so here are my subjective choices! And since I didn’t download the app I don’t really know where these particular Eggs are but I’m guess on a few.  And if you have seen them or have a good guess, send in your comment!

This week, Dr. Barry Lubetkin taps into our discomfort zone and offers us sound advice on how to stay motivated.

Discomfort Dodging and the Comfort Junkies

To one degree or another we are all discomfort dodgers. We believe in the mañana principal;  If it’s a hassle or uncomfortable to get to, then just put it off until tomorrow!  Stay within your comfort zone…don’t venture into activities that might cause anxiety or hard mental or physical stress!

Of course the problem with this mental attitude is that by regularly avoiding the day to day hassles of life (eg. studying, housework, cold calling, writing a paper, visiting a doctor,  asking for a raise, etc., etc.) we allow things to go unaccomplished, anxiety and stress increase, self esteem suffers, and the forward progress that we all want to achieve in our lives stalls.

When we dodge discomfort what exactly are we telling ourselves? “I don’t have the mental energy to do the task”, “I’ll be too embarrassed,” It’s too difficult,” If I’m successful they will expect more,”  etc., etc. blah, blah, blah!

Once you have determined the exact cause of your unhelpful whining…CHALLENGE IT!  Discover that you really have little evidence to support your idea that you can’t possibly do the task. Remind yourself that you have done it many times before. Will there really be no mental cost if you remain on your couch and do nothing?  Of course there will be!

Every day choose one task you have been dodging, and push yourself to accomplish it. Ask a friend to support your decision. Spend much more time in the zone of discomfort and abandon the zone of complacency. Here’s a task: email me, at ibt104 @aol.com and tell me what you think.

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

It’s National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day! Did you know that the average American consumes 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches by the age of 18? The combination of sweet jelly and salty peanut butter has been a staple in school lunchboxes for over fifty years.

According to one story, American soldiers invented the peanut butter and jelly sandwich during World War II. They decided to combine their bread, jelly, and peanut butter rations into a fabulous new treat. When the soldiers returned home after the war, peanut butter and jelly sales soared.

To celebrate National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, make this iconic American sandwich for lunch!

April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month & National Grilled Cheese Month.

A shout-out and thanks to my friend, Ginny, who sent me the link to this story.  It was posted in HUFF POST today.  What follows is a portion of that article:

Let’s be clear: April Fools’ Day is not a religious holiday.

It does, however, trace its origins to a pope.

The day began, most believe, in 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII decreed the adoption of the “Gregorian calendar” — named after himself — which moved New Year’s Day from the end of March to Jan. 1.

The change was published widely, explains Ginger Smoak, an expert in medieval history at the University of Utah, but those who didn’t get the message and continued to celebrate on April 1 “were ridiculed and, because they were seen as foolish, called April Fools.”

Even though the annual panoply of pranks meant to mock the gullible or to send a friend on a “fool’s errand” may not be grounded in any ancient religious merrymaking, the notion of “holy fools” does have a long and respected place in Judeo-Christian history.

Hebrew prophets were often scorned as mad or eccentric for pronouncing unwelcome or uncomfortable truths. The Apostle Paul talked to the Corinthians about becoming “fools for Christ.” And Eastern Orthodoxy still sees the “holy fool” as a type of Christian martyr.

Such views are wrapped up in paradox.

“If the wisdom of the world is folly to God, and God’s own foolishness is the only true wisdom,” argues British clergyman John Saward in “Perfect Fools: Folly for Christ’s Sake in Catholic and Orthodox Spirituality,” “it follows that the worldly wise, to become truly wise, must become foolish and renounce their worldly wisdom.”

Personally my April Fool’s Day was uneventful!  But oh how I remember the April Fool’s Days of my youth.  Putting salt in the sugar bowl or sugar in the salt shaker.  Telling a friend that her mother was looking for her, switching our seats in school, sending my mother running into the living room because I told her the dog pooped on the rug.  I also had a plastic ice cube that had a fly imbedded in it and one of the those buzzer gadgets you put in your palm when you shook someone’s hand.  What crazy funny things did you do today or get done to (interesting English grammar there)?

Apologies readers, today just got away from me and I was unable to post our weekly Mental Health Monday but here it is.  This week, Dr. Barry Lubetkin explores sexuality, fetishism and fantasy, I’m sure you’ll want to read this week’s column.  Here is what he has to say:

BDSM_buttons_spanking_L

BDSM_buttons_spanking_L (Photo credit: CapesTreasures)

Since I began my career over forty years ago, no book has ever stirred the passions of my female patients more then the “pornmantic” best seller Fifty Shades of Gray .  It gave a voice to the often hidden sexual drives of women who desire more than just the vanilla, missionary position, warm and cuddly sexual play. It brought BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism, masochism) out of the closet and into suburban bedrooms throughout America.

The powerful eroticism of enhancing sexual intimacy with fetishistic clothing, dominant submissive role playing, spanking, power exchange, etc., has finally been experienced by many thousands of couples who knew these fantasies existed in the deeper regions of their minds, but never felt free enough to express them. It is helpful that the main ethos of the BDSM community is to always keep these activities SAFE, SANE, and CONSENSUAL. The Internet is full of websites designed to guide the adventurous into experiencing a more variable and satisfying sex life.

Far too many marriages suffer from a deteriorating sex life because partners are unwilling to “take a chance” and try something different. A 62 year old male patient had felt embarrassed and “perverted” to ask his girlfriend to wear a particular outfit during sex. Her willingness to do so greatly enhanced his arousal level and ultimately improved their sex life overall.

Be willing to have those initially embarrassing but ultimately freeing conversations with your partner about fantasies, turn offs, “hot spots” during sex play. Talk “dirty” if that moves you, try new body areas to explore, but always…ALWAYS, keep verbal communication going, so everyone remains on the same page. As always I am available at IBT104@aol.com for more info.”

Dr. Barry Lubetkin has been a guest on several talk shows including  the Oprah Winfrey show and Carole Altman’s. Ms. Altman is the author of Electrify Your Sex Life: How To Get Rid Of Sexual Hangups and Inhibitions.

Today my nephew Justin sent me a YouTube video from WatchMoJo.com and as he suspected, it was right up my alley. You can find it on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIsoZd4EHeQ.  The makers of this video are upset over some BEST PICTURE Academy Award winners during years when there were (in their opinion and mine except for one) much better and more deserving movies nominated.   Did you know that the BEST PICTURE category is the only one in which any and all Academy members are allowed to vote.  Every other category is limited to members of the group category.  Here is their list: See what you think of the list and their picks.  What would you pick?  My choices are **

  1. 1998 – Driving Miss Daisy  won BP and therefore Dead Poet’s Society* and The Fourth of July lost.
  2. 1982 – Ghandi  beat out ET* and Tootsie
  3. 1941 How Green Was My Valley won and that meant that The Maltese Falcon and Citizen Kane* lost! Citizen Kane, REALLY??
  4. 1996 – The English Patient which I actually liked a lot even though it has  been mocked in a SEINFELD episode.  It did win over Jerry MaGuire and Fargo*
  5. 1998 – Shakespeare in Love a very nice movie but no Saving Private Ryan*.
  6. 1990 – Dances With Wolves My main disagreement with this list; I loved Dances With Wolves although I can no longer watch it because of the harm of the wolf. It was pitted against Awakenings and Ghost*
  7. 2002 – Chicago I loved the soundtrack and the movie itself BUT I thought this top award should go to  Lord of the Rings-Two Towers*, The Pianist was an also ran and if I could pick two, it would be included.
  8. 2005 – Crash A good story however, BP needs to encompass story line, acting, casting, set design and direction and as that is the criteria, it’s hard to believe that this movie won over Capote, Broke Back Mountain* and Good Night and Good Luck.
  9. 1956 – Around the World in 80 Days fun, cute but the performances in The King and I* and the cinematography and art direction of the Ten Commandments certainly deserved the BP over the winner.
  10. 1968 – Oliver Hollywood loves its musicals and all things Brittish, but this movie was not as good as 2001 Space Odessey*.

I’m posting my Ten More tomorrow morning. I started this too late, it’s been a long day but the real reason I’m stopping here is because I have to watch Hell’s Kitchen which I DVR’d earlier this evening!

We ask our friends for recommendations for doctors, dentists, babysitters, hairdressers, real estate agents and just about anything and everything else BUT we are shy, embarrassed and hesitant about asking for a referral of a “good therapist”.  And then there’s the question as to what type of mental health professional we should seek out.  Dr. Barry Lubetkin sheds some light on this subject today.

Mental Health Awareness Ribbon

Mental Health Awareness Ribbon (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

People are often very confused about who to seek out for mental health diagnosis, therapy, counseling and medication. And once some professional has been chosen, how does one know that this is the right person for them. Unfortunately often, because of the stigma that still is associated with the need for Psychiatric or Psychological help, friends recommendations are often replaced by random choices from impersonal insurance provider lists.

These are the categories of mental health professionals:
Psychologists PhD or PsyD:  A minimum of 4 years post college graduate training plus a 1 year clinical internship. Specializing in providing various types of psychotherapy and diagnostic assessment. An ABPP distinction after their degree signifies advanced competence in their particular specialty.

Psychiatrists MD: A minimum of 4 years post college Medical School, plus a 1 year internship and at least a 2 year residency in Psychiatry, specializing in diagnosis and psychopharmacology treatment of mental disorders. Fewer and fewer Psychiatrists spend their time providing hour-long psychotherapy sessions.

Social Workers: MSW, LCSW, DSW: A minimum of 2 post college years, plus at least 1 year of intense clinical practicum training.
Mental Health Counselors. CMHC, LMHC: A minimum of 2 post college  years to earn the Masters degree in their specialty, and at least 2000 hours of intense supervised clinical training.

When choosing a therapist, you must ask yourself whether you have “chemistry” with the professional…? Are you feeling understood, not intimidated, trusting? And most importantly, does this person have the requisite training and experience to deal with your particular problem? Don’t be afraid to ask  what specialized advanced workshops or training programs they have taken pertaining to your particular problem…Have they treated people with your problems before…?  How long should you expect to be in treatment?

In this most important of all medical endeavor…exploring your mind, you need to be a smart and knowledgeable consumer. I am available at IBT104@aol.com for further guidance.

I found out that I could put a POLL on my blog which makes it oh so easy for you to vote (filling in the brackets) and you don’t need to send in a comment or make a copy of the bracket to work on. JUST answer the question as to what cake or pie will make it to Round 3.  I’ve put in my winners  and now it’s up to you to pick from those choices to see who will go to the Regional Semi-Finals.  Please VOTE.

Today begins the official, unofficial beginning of March Madness.  Well,  actually it is official, what used to be called Play-In Games are now known as First Four which is certainly not to be confused with the Final Four!  Having spent most of life in Connecticut, I have always been a Huskies fan and there was a point in my life (read in between marriages) when I would spend several evenings and Saturdays  in my town’s local bar and pizzeria, drinking and cheering along with recent and not so recent alumni of UCONN and fellow fans.

That was then, and that was a long time ago!  I casually name-dropped  Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight and the Final Four but the First Four? Oh well, today is the day that the Madness begins and unless I’ve misunderstood this term (and that is SO POSSIBLE) I think in the next two days, 8 teams are going to play off or Play-In and then there will be 4 and they will be the First Four.  Okay, so who cares?  The real question is will the Orangemen defeat Dayton in the second round?  Many of the brackets I’ve looked at have predicted Syracuse will lose!  Oooohhh is it really all about momentum? They had a phenomenal early season and maybe if we all pray hard enough, wish hard enough, send enough positive thoughts their way and light a few candles AND wear orange (of course), maybe we will see them in the Regional Semi Finals.  And from there, well Dallas here we come!

So what is a UCONN Huskies fan doing promoting the Orangemen? Well you just gotta listen to BRACKETOLOGY as interpreted and sung by TWO ABSURD.  Dick and Bob Chancia are identical twins who grew up in Utica, New York, both attended Syracuse University and both had careers in Advertising and Art Direction (each on separate coasts)!  AND NOW, these two extraordinarily talented guys have turned to writing and performing some really crazy, or let’s just say absurd songs!  Now how or why two Italian guys from upstate New York are writing and singing RAP songs is….well absurd!

Syracuse fans are ageless and seasonless; so although they wrote this unbelievably-rhymed RAP called BRACKETOLGY in 2012, it is still spot-on in 2014!  I hope you’ll enjoy it, the link is below.
